This was a really beautiful sing along at CS&N concerts. A bit of background: The music scene was, for a short while, a very fluid gathering of talent. Wally Heidler opened a recording studeo in San Franscico in 1969. Before that the S.F. bands had to go to LA to record. Now they could stay at home and go to the studio and hang out together. The Dead, CS&Y&N and Jefferson Airplane mingled amongst and within this group. Jerry is listed as Spiritual Advisor on Surrealistic Pillow, Crosby, Stills and Paul Kantner co-wrote Wooden Ships, Grace covered the song Triad that Crosby wrote, Jack Cassidy sat in with Jimi Hendrix. Paul Kantner put out an LP that has Grace, Jerry, David, Grahm, and Bob Weir, and another had the Staple Singers doing back-up. Crosby's first solo LP has Grace, Joni Mitchel, Neil & Graham, Jerry and others. CS&N show up on Joni Mitchell LP's. This period is loosely known as the Planet Earth Rock & Roll Orchestra.
First hearing this when it came out as an 18 yo and now as a grandparent, this is a most prophetic song. Such special meaning. I still love hearing it and seeing your enjoyment and understanding is just so special.
Just had an epiphany of sorts. I followed in my Daddy's footsteps and joined the navy after I graduated high school. He was a Navy vet. I told him on Christmas Day in '79 that I was leaving at 4 am for boot camp. I have never seen him so proud of me! His eyes lit up and he ran and hugged me. He never knew til I told him--it was a my Christmas Present.

Lyrics:
[Verse 1]
You, who are on the road
Must have a code
That you can live by
And so
Become yourself
Because the past
Is just a good-bye
[Chorus]
Teach your children well
Your father's hell did slowly go by
And feed them on your dreams
The one they picked
The one you'll know by
[Post-Chorus]
Don't you ever ask them why
If they told you, you would cry
So just look at them and sigh
And know they love you
[Verse 2]
And you of tender years (Can you hear and do you care)
Can't know the fears (And can you see)
That your elders grew by (We must be free)
And so please help (To teach your children)
Them with your youth (What you believe in)
They seek the truth (Make a world)
Before they can die (That we can live in)
[Chorus]
Teach your parents well
The children's hell
Will slowly go by
And feed them on your dreams
The one they picked
The one you'll know by
[Post-Chorus]
Don't you ever ask them why
If they told you, you would cry
So just look at them and sigh
And know they love you

@@hooper4581 And I keep learning! Thanks Jamel, I thought I knew a little something about music, but your community keeps the interesting facts coming. And Jamel keeps the inspirational messages coming as well. Thanks!

I was looking for your comment. Knew somebody had to have posted it
Neil Young turned 75 today
Old man

Psssh!!!! Big deal, I almost cut my hair today.....
@@fewwiggle Its gettin kind of long ? lol
Cheerful, happy tune. Listened to this song many times in my 58 years! Brings back good times.
I love watching you react to music (it makes me smile).... especially the feeling parts of music ("and know they love you"). I think it shows that you're a good man and a good example to young men that it's okay to feel and to show it.
If you like the harmonies in this one, you will love Guinevere.
Absolutely a song i feel got lost in all greatness of their other songs
Absolutely my favorite, hands down. Beautiful & haunting.
Beautiful song
My older brother's band, called "Logan Spur" played this song all the time, and, they did a great job, if I do say so myself! LOL I have loved this song all my life!
Thank you for sharing this song and your incredible thoughts about our children!
Tears from thinking of my grandchildren and a future much more difficult than mine ever was.
Yesterday I've been asking for this so much please more csn!!!!!!!
You should do wooden ships next btw
The whole album Deja Vu is a gift!!! I think this album is in my top five
One of Graham Nash's great songs about how parents and kids can learn from each other. So beautiful.
It’s great to see you truly appreciate awesome music. You consistently select incredible pieces that have become iconic treasures of American music, history and culture.
That is not a picture of Jerry but Jerry is playing the pedal steel guitar on this!
Our House and Suite: Judy Blue Eyes by CSN&Y. One of my favorite concert moments was singing "Our House" with them - where the audience did most of the singing.

Yes on this dads playlist, and all of my kids have heard many times. When they understood the words they got it!
This song is soooo true! My oldest just turned 30 and it's great to see what they're doing any wot stuck in their upbringing. When I'm gone, that'll be all that's left of me in this world. . .
Wanna hear them harmonize? Do "Helplessly Hoping" goosebump city!
This f’ing song still makes me cry. It needs a cowbell.
You betcha, never can have too much cowbell. lol This song always makes me cry, too, my friend.
Annie
Me too. My don in law just walked in and I am sniffling away trying hard not to sob. Years have flown by!
Every time I hear this song, I cry. It's such a beautiful song. Judy Blue Eyes is another good one by them!
One of my favorite songs ❤️ thank you for doing it, it starts out about the children and flips about the children and their older parents ❤️
No, not Jerry Garcia, he died a few years ago. this is David Crosby, Stephen Stills, Graham Nash and Neil Young
Garcia is on pedal steel!
@@mr.marcus3123 yes. On the studio recording, which this is. But the photo is only (l to r) Stephen Stills, Graham Nash, David Crosby and Neil Young. Jerry had died by the time of the photo.
Jerry died in 1995, a quarter century ago.
@@revsharkie lol "a few years ago!"
Not Jerry in the photo, but by coincidence, he is the one playing pedal steel. This was during what Bob Weir described as his period of flirtation with the pedal steel guitar.
The reversal of the chorus the second time around is my favorite part.
This song is so relevant today. But relevant for every generation.
I sang this song in an a capella group in college. One of the funnest, most surprisingly touching songs I’ve ever sung. Something about the harmonies with the lyrics together just hit the sweet spot. I think I like it more without instruments. The vocal harmonies are plenty!
Take a listen to “Helplessly Hoping” by these same guys. Some of the best harmonies ever IMO. My fault, you already reacted to it.
Butiful song. You should move on to “Suite: Judy Blue Eyes”
He reacted to that a while back!
@@ltrainor4078 Will have to look that one up.

@@herbyragan7801 That's my #1 song of all time. Different movements and feels. Numerous songs in one!
@@herbyragan7801 one of my favorites!
In the top 5 of groups for perfection in harmony. Amazing. Love that you are enjoying the music and lyrics that I grew up on. The music of the 60s and 70s influenced my life in a myriad of ways, both good and bad. But mostly good. Thanks Jamel.
Thank you for the reaction and the song and you are right about the kids I wish that I would have listened to my parents more when I was younger your parents will never tell you anything to hurt you they'll always tell you what's true and what you need to do because they love you thank you,
I will stand by this statement to my dying day, David Crosby is THE greatest harmonizing vocalist in rock and roll.
IDK, Graham Nash is pretty spectacular as well!
@@wanderlustchicklmtlori Graham is a fantastic singer, and make no mistake that I think all 4 of them are geniuses in their own right. But Crosby has an almost athletic ability to find the harmonies with almost any singer he plays with
I saw them live at Madison Square Garden in 2000! Man they were soo good!
I was there.....great show!
I am so glad i found your channel. You are bringing me back .to memories of my childhood and more. Music really transcends all generations. Races. To me it brings me peace. We really need our new generation to educate themselves. With music and the arts. We might have a better world. Peace out. 😍
One of the greatest albums ever made. This song goes straight into 'Almost cut my hair', which is a whole 'nother vibe and definitely worth a listen.
First hearing this when it came out as an 18 yo
and now as a grandparent, this is a most prophetic song.
