    Join us on one of the most scenic drives on earth to one of the natural wonders of the world!
    We journey into Fiordland National Park and encounter rare and endemic wildlife, getting up close and very personal with our native birds. We travel through glacial carved valleys with cascading waterfalls which culminate in a cruise on New Zealand’s most famous Fjord, Milford Sound.
    Chapters:
    Introduction 0:00
    Te Anau 1:19
    We start off in the Southland town of Te Anau and learn about its wetland ecosystem in a reserve located beneath a mountain sacred to the Maori people. We continue on the the Te Anau Bird Sanctuary where we visit the endangered Takahe before heading out on the road via Te Anau Downs to Fiordland.
    Egglington Valley/Mirror Lakes 3:59
    Entering into Fiordland National Park we head into the wide open Egglington Valley and onto the superb reflective mirror lakes along with its forested birdlife.
    Lake Gunn 6:11
    We stop at the beautiful Lake Gunn where we sight Kea’s (alpine parrot), Kaka’s (arboreal parrot), the Kereru (wood pigeon) and watch jumping trout.
    Hollyford Valley 9:39
    Here we learn about the plate tectonic that form the southern alps and learn about the once great glaciers that sculpted these valleys of epic grandeur. Within the alpine valley we interact with the worlds only alpine parrot, the Kea.
    The Homer Tunnel to Milford Sound 13:08
    From the Homer Saddle we drive through this 1.2km historic tunnel to the breathtaking Cleddau Valley where we are intercepted by more Kea. We descend down to Milford Sound via Mt Tutoko, the highest mountain in Fiordland.
    Cruise Milford 18:24
    We board our Cruise within the Fjord as we venture out to the Tasman Sea and back. We spot a colony of New Zealand Fur Seals lazing about and splashing around before we get wet ourselves under a 155m waterfall known as Stirling Falls.
    The legend of Piopiotahi/Milford Sound 22:32
    We learn the Maori legend about the 14 Fjords of Fiordland including Piopiotahi or Milford Sound. This concludes our journey to a place considered one of the natural wonders of the world!

      Haha that sounds like them! Atleast you weren’t on the ice when it happened, that could have devastating consequences..

    Hi which month did you visit? And which month you think is the best to go there to see the beauty of it? Thanks in advance

    • @GlobalTravelStories
      @GlobalTravelStories  Před 3 měsíci

      Hi there, as mentioned at the start of the video this is shot over a 2 year period in all seasons. Each season brings something new and unique, you’ll see how beautiful it is with the shots in the snow, the summer is equally as beautiful in the sunshine and warmth, and even heavy rain brings spectacular waterfalls. You can’t go wrong!

    Hi. Loved this video. I'll be doing the same trip in mid September this year. Do you think I'll need snow chains on my car?

    • @GlobalTravelStories
      @GlobalTravelStories  Před 2 měsíci

      Glad you enjoyed it! September you don’t normally need chains but some of the snow shots I got were from a freak snowstorm in Sep which can happen, however it’s very rare that chains are required on that road.. even in winter, they are pretty good at clearing it asap!

    if we hadnt had global temp rises/warming from last ice age , we woul;d not have these beautiful fiords to wonder at . Glass half full or empty

    • @GlobalTravelStories
      @GlobalTravelStories  Před 3 měsíci +1

      The previous rate of temp rises took thousands of years after the last glacial maximum (we still have fragmented glaciers in Fiordland). This slow natural process allowed ecosystems to catch up to changes. Not all historical climate change is a bad thing. The current rate at which things are warming is much faster and far more unpredictable in its consequences, that’s what is worrying scientists.
