Jam tins (Drum brakes) were notorious for locking up a wheel when badly adjusted which was a great way to explain "self energising" and I had that issue a few times back in the day.
I daily drove a Val for years with 4 wheel jam tins and non boosted brakes and it was as good as a disc drum combo and IMO better than 4 wheel discs in the early days of Aussie performance brakes on production cars.
11 inch finned drums, 3 on the tree and mountain driving wasnt an issue even if I was fanging on my way to work coz it was all in good working order.
8 years ago I revisited that setup in a project car and time obviously made me forget how bloody scary drum brakes were but again after a new master, hard lines and hoses and new drums, slaves etc I got the new non asbestos shoes to break in even and was amazed at how good this old style of stopper really was and especially when towing a ton in a trailer.
I did add a bias valve to tweak the front/rear brake bias though lol

We used to fit the PBR VH44 to customers cars in the 60's, Holdens, Zephyr's, Vauxhall's, etc. A sticker came in the box which went on the back window warning following drivers that the car in front had power brakes ,"Beware - Power Brakes" it said from memory. We'd warn the customer before he/she left the workshop to be careful at first with the brakes as they wouldn't need as much pedal pressure. So they'd drive off happy as Larry and seconds later we'd hear this god-almighty screech of tyres, we'd rush out onto the driveway and it was just our customer sliding in a cloud of tyre smoke to their first "power brake" stop at the traffic lights down the street... It would happen every time.
