There is a huge difference in class choreography and social dance moves. When a lady knows in advance what to do they will do all the moves most of the time. But social dancing is spontaneous moves. It means that only very few selected moves will go smoothly and do not look bad or messed up.
So many good dancers make ladies life hell just to show off a complicated move. Social dancing is totally a different skill

Exactly.....you summed it up really well. If you dance with someone you've been dancing with quite a while these moves will work but on a random person....not so much. I've danced with a good number of people at socials but only one person i had good chemistry with was a classmate of mine and we didn't dance together that often but there was a connection that somehow made it all easy.....I am not an expert just speaking from experience.....and on your last comment believe me i have seen dudes really abuse ladies to the point that their ankles were done after just one song.....turn after turn....it was really bad...

@@memoranda1 When chemistry strikes everything becomes easy, fluid and fun.. i noticed over time it has nothing to do with the level of the person ( it helps tho )

There is a multitude of reasons.
In Holland there are salsa teachers that fail to explain to their students if their classes are Cuban or LA-based. Dancing with someone that has no clue which style they learned can be somewhat complicated. There are even salsa teachers that themselves honestly do not know what style they dance...
Too many Leaders believe they have to shower the Follower with all of their techniques. Often it is needed to check the level of the follower either by first observing them dance with others or by simply asking after their experience.
Too many followers will try and predict what the leader will do next, or simply do what they are used to do. Even if there is no need of possibility for that. Example: many followers will do a turn when the leader does a loop/ allarde. Even when that turn goes against the count. Similarly, many followers will let go of the hand(s) of the leader during turns etc or remove their hand from where the followers places it. Partially this is something that can be blamed on whomever is training the follower but quite often it is also a matter of the follower believing they need to do a turn, even when that goes against the beat/ count/ flow. Many followers will try to improvise doing complicated stuff instead of falling back on more basic techniques they know.
Many dancers that have experience dancing in salsa show teams, become bad social dancers. They are used to doing certain patterns, engraved in their muscle memory, often with excessive hand movements for the followers.
Basically, when we go with the presumption that salsa is an improvised dance, different with each partner, each song and each location, what show teams do can no longer be seen as salsa. It's more like Line-dancing or modern dance, allbeit on a salsa tune.
Any choreographed (group) dance that has been trained and drilled on for weeks in order to get perfect synchronised movements is not an improvisation. And improvisation is at the very core of salsa. All too often I have seen show team dancers repeating quite long patterns that they have been drilled on for a performance, confusing their partner like crazy.
Experienced followers can perhaps adapt to the leader dancing in fixed patterns. But for leaders it is quite tricky to find that the follower is used to "only" dance in a not improvised manner. They find the follower will not react to queues they are giving and go off to complete the patterns they are used to.

      Looks like same problem everywhere.
Teacher only teaching in private or private lessons. To general public they just do the formalities. I have also noticed that male teachers do not want other guys to become good dancers as they might get more attention be being good dancer.
Ladies love solo dancing, they don't like partner work. This is why they like more bachata because there they follow less and move and express themselves more.
Salsa can not work without complete submission or in other words be ready and wait for the Lead. So ladies like solo dancing in shows and groups as it put them in showcase directly.
Social dancing has nothing to do being a good dancer teacher. In fact most teachers are very harsh and bad lead in social dancing. Someone with less dancer moves and less experienc can be really good social dancer.
Its the myths and untested information that dancers have been keep spreading over the years that does not let men become as good leader.

I'd say that the leader is responsible for about 80% of the issues.
However, a common problem related to the follower is anticipation of the moves. There is little the leader can do to compensate or adapt to mitigate the early moves by the follower.

I have 8 or 10 moves in my repertoire... how can this be fun for the ladies if it's always the same repetitive moves... I want to bring that knowledge to 20 and after I will takethe part A of "move 3" mix it with part B of "move 5" and generates new moves... Then, in my mind, I will validate the move in social... I like to be extra prepared... :)

let me reassure you... most of this is self inflicted pressure...pretty much all guys feel this way in their first years... In my 25 years in the business I never heard a woman say: I dont like to dance with this guy because he doesnt know a lot of moves... but i can tell you I heard a thousand times: this guy ripped my arms!!!!... so even with 10 moves you can dance all night... just smile and dont worry youre on the right track ;)

I never understood why most of dancers try in a social dance to make all the moves they can, since social is just for fun😒😒

Unfortunately the gentleman at the end of the video is wrong. Because as a leader we can't test our move on every girl and expect them to respond.
I understand that he is trying to say that try with more and more make it smoother but moves in social dancing are executed based on dance level only. If for example I have learnt a advance level move or dip then does not matter how many ladies that I try this move with. Only and only who is that move level of dancing can dance on that move.

    • @SalsaBailaProductions
      @SalsaBailaProductions  Před 5 měsíci +1

Here I partly agree with you... as you can't expect a beginner to do advanced moves but as a lead I always try to work out the clarity of all my moves with as many dancers possible socially speaking... now if she knows or saw my move that doesn't count in my book. My goal as a lead is to work on adapting quickly and clarifying my lead... when I dance with my friends I asked them to tell me were i wasn't clear when i tried to do something and it didn't pan out the way I wanted... they give me cues when i can correct my lead. I look at my partners reaction to move if I was clear or not....Im always in auto-correct mode. I can assure you an advanced move can be done to an inter dancer no problem if your lead is impeccable and a dip can be done to someone that never danced before. Have a great day and thanks for your comments ;)
