Vital gearbox oil additive for Moto Guzzi V85TT that is not mentioned in the manual: Moly

  • Hi all ;) a short reminder that Moto Guzzi is still recommending MoS2 additives for the gearbox and bevel drive. I have been using MoS2 with no change in the bevel drive behaviour, but it did change a lot for the gearbox. Highly recommended ;) Go for your favorite brand MoS2, it just needs to be gearbox specific and not solely aimed as an engine oil additive.

    In all my airheads, k1100lt and v7 iii I use this additive - one tube per 1l 75/140 gl5 gear oil. Both for gearbox and final drive. Makes a lot of difference. My v7 and even 80Gs change gears like Japanese bikes.

    Thank you for the tip. My bevel drive is quite loud and I only have 300 miles on it after the oil change.

      My guess is that what u hear is the tire :) i dont know if it would help a lot with sound in bavel drive. Gearbox did get better tho

      @@Kristisltu I thought about the tires. However, the noise goes away if I pull the clutch.
      My bike has a full Arrow exhaust, no catalytic converters. From day one it run lousy. It would throw a "blinking" check engine light when it hit 5200rpm. No codes recorded. The dealership couldn't figure it out. It felt like the bike suffered by a bad signal sensor. Finally, the MOTO GUZZI tech contacted the school in California, sent the freeze frame data from my ECU and they figured out that a sensor, I believe the crank sensor needs to be recalibrated and it happens only for the 2022 and 2021 Euro 5 bikes. They sent us the procedure and now all good. It even picked up some extra horsepower. They also said that MOTO GUZZI, thanks to me, they will sent a DTB to all dealers for this. While my bike was at the dealer, 2 more came in with the exact same problem therefore, my bike was the Guinea Pig. Then, I had to test it, ride it under all conditions and then report back so that they can fix the rest of the bikes possibly world wide. MOTO GUZZI isn't perfect but they are also absolutely awesome. I own a V9 Bobber, a V85TT and soon the V100 when it comes out. Cheers.

      Id still say its the gearbox then. Mine went silent with moly, but the noticable effect was after 300-400km only. Crank sensor was a problem with e4 bikes too, it was throwing a lot of errors and it was a common thing to get replaced. Im rather surprised it has not been fixed till e5...

      @@Kristisltu Actually there was nothing wrong with the sensor. It just needed recalibration. Now at the dealership before they deliver a bike they do the procedure. As far as the gear box, maybe, I don't doubt it. Even though the noise comes from the rear and at speeds over 60mph. Not consistent, it comes and goes. It sounds like a bearing noise. The tech at MOTO GUZZI said that the gear back there is quite large and usually noisy, don't worry about it. We shall see.
      Hey, what does the V100 Mandello selling for and what are the options? I want one, but I think that I'll get the second production year when MOTO GUZZI has worked out all the bugs.

    After seeing this video I researched MoS2 and modern Guzzis fairly deeply and the answer is pretty clear that MoS2 is not necessary. In fact the oil I just bought for my '22 V85 claims to provide "Moly" protection, though what that means exactly is not clear. For older Guzzis there's no question that MoS2 has value. It's also worth noting that at least one other comment here asserts that MoS2 is flat out NOT recommended for newer Guzzis due to the nylon bearings.

      Cant argue about the bearings, but since it was in the original factory fill - i prefer to stick to what the factory is using here :)

    While it may be the case that MG used to add MoS2 to its gear box and final drive oils in the past, the "Service Station Manual" (2019) of the V85TT explicitly warns to add additives on page 19: "do not add additives or other substances to the fluid (...)". On the same page MG also recommends an undisputedely wrong replacement quantity for the final drive oil!! Correct refill quantity is 160ml !
    The same warning is issued on page 22 for the gearbox oil.

      They also recommend SG oil in the manual... :) but both bevel drive and gearbox had MoS2 in their factory fill (distinctive smell and appearance)

    I can't find anything in the workshop manual re adding moly. If it was essential surely Moto Guzzi would state that.
    Where is your link to show moly additive is used?

      Its not in the manual anymore, but it was factory fill + older guzzisti riders will tell you the stories ;) for the gearbox - id say u can go without it too, its just gets the shifting way smoother. But in bevel drive - its a must. Much more silent ride :)

    I used Molyslip in my gear box on my California EV wow smooth although the manual states not use additives why is this????

      @@Kristisltu my buddy has crash bars on his Honda CBX500 and he can attach 2.5 gallon Jerry cans on each side... would be awesome if I could find something similar on guzzi

    Thanks. I just changed my gearbox and bevel drive with non moly synthetic gear oil. The shifting feels good, but moly is a wear protector so it may increase longevity.

      Did the same with first change. But with MoS2 now added - feel way smoother (gearbox).
      Was your gearbox filled to spec or was it underfilled too?

      @@Kristisltu I didn't measure how much came out, but it was definitely less than the 700 cc I put back in.
      I never had leaking from the bevel drive, so I assume it wasn't underfilled, and I put in 160cc.
      To be really accurate, I used a big syringe (350 cc with 10 cc incremental markings.) It shifts slightly better, but if you saw improvement with molybdenum then I think I'll swap out some gear lube for the correct moly treatment. It may help and I'm certain it won't hurt.

    MoS2, (Molybdenum bisulphide) n'est pas recommandé pour les Guzzi modernes. Les cages de roulements sont maintenant faites en nylon et ne le supportent pas!🤨

      It is ;) it was original fill. Check your your first oil in gearbox or bevel, both had mos2 added from stock and its commonly added by the dealers who specify in MG

      I read this to in the internet, Moto Guzzi nylon bearings don't support MoS2
