  • I set out to find a DEC PDP-10 and failed miserably, but at least I found another 465M. I repair and check it out. This is a continuation of episode AE#18 which should be watched first.

    Hi Arti, I have recently subscribed to your channel(today). I really enjoy your repair videos. I too am buying test gear on eBay in the hope of finding some diamonds in the rough which I may polish into that fine piece of test gear. It is truly hit and miss on eBay. My pockets are very shallow and yet I have been able to put together a lab which when I went to electronics school would have been unattainable. I have in the last few months acquired a 4 ch 100MHz Tek scope, several power supplies, a 5 1/2 digit HP DMM and a 225MHz HP freq cntr. and some signal generators. I went to school for digital computer repair in the early/mid 80's and no jobs as the industry had shifted from component level repair to board swapping. Missed out on most of the last 30+ years of electronics development. I finished electronics school in 1985 and went right into construction engineering! Really fun to get back to playing with the electrons.

    I’ve enjoyed this video so much, that I’ve now subscribed to your channel. You are both super knowledgeable and hilarious! Perhaps, you can help me. Here’s the issue, I recently acquired Vu-Data portable oscilloscope [ps910b]: it looks great and it is very clean, inside and out. It seems to do well, with AC signals [I haven't had time to play with it much yet] BUT when it comes to DC, I get the reference trace just fine, but the instant I place the probe onto, say a 1.5 volt battery, the trace which should move up vertically, instead disappears - so, I end up having to fiddle around with the +/- trigger to locate it. I do find it eventually but I don't think this is normal. I should point out, that I’m just an electronic enthusiast [without any formal training] and this is my first o-scope. It’s a small single channel scope, inexpensive, clean and it came with its manual [which is really more of a technical service manual - not a user-friendly instruction manual, and somewhat over my head]. I’ve fixed a few CRT TVs, few old radios, fans, etc, but nothing as complex as a scope. I don’t want to damage it accidentally. Frankly, I couldn’t even tell you if it’s a vertical control issue or an horizontal one... Please let me know what you think. Any insight will be greatly appreciated. Thank you kindly, in advance.

      It almost sounds like the sweep circuit isn't working in DC mode. You've given a good description of the problem, but it's still difficult to diagnose remotely. I would start with acquiring a copy of the schematics and analyzing what happens when you switch from DC to AC mode.

    Good forensic diagnosis hypothesizing around the impact the unit probably suffered. You are an amazing tech.

    If the guys make a DSO with enough ram and sampling to drive something like an Apples 'retina' display then I'll be interested. All the ones I've look at so far seem to have blocky pixalated displays. Until then I'll stick with my CROs. Yeah I know the DSOs will display accurately measured Voltage, Frequency, Duty Cycle etc but to my mind nothing beats that crisp analog trace.
    Cheers.

    Regarding cleaning the pots, I wonder if repeatedly moving them is doing the actual “cleaning”. I have my doubts that the cleaner is making it down the shaft which is packed with grease and then spreading out onto the wiper- all in a matter minutes. Cleaner thins the grease somewhat and without the grease on the shaft the shaft will feel either loose or scratchy from metal rubbing directly on metal. Even if the cleaner got down there, all the dirt is still inside the sealed pot. Maybe try just repeatedly moving the pot next time and see if it “cleans up” without the cleaner. This has been my experience.

    • @artifactelectronics
      @artifactelectronics  Před 5 lety

      I usually try just working the control for a while. If that fails I use contact cleaner. It does work in the short term, but your point is well taken.

    Hi Arti , great video, sure hope my 465Ms electrolytic capacitor in question is ok.
    Are there any other differences between the 465B and the 465M ,other than than the M having heat sinks instead of a fan that you know of?
    Cheers from the land of OZ😀😀🤗

    PDP-10? Port an OS? Your friend must be ancient and seems to have a bizarre sense of humor. Nice video. Are you planning on opening a scope museum soon? Most people probably wouldn't mind some strong language when things go wrong but I suppose youtube might object.

    When you clean the pots, wouldn't it be better for them to be upside down so the dirt can come out. It seems like after you are done, you're left with a potentiometer with clean contacts, but with dirty cleaner floating around inside.

    Thanks for another great repair. I've noticed that your camera is often slightly out of focus with respect to items in the middle of the frame. I was wondering if you were using an auto focus setting that checks several areas of the frame simultaneously but can sometimes give this effect when items are fairly close and central. Perhaps changing the auto focus to a centrally weighted option would eliminate this and provide better results for your videos. Thanks, I hope this helps.

    • @artifactelectronics
      @artifactelectronics  Před 6 lety

      I'm aware of the unfortunate focusing problem, but I think that the camera is rapidly nearing the end of its useful life.

    I have a digital Tek TDS1002B since 2008 and I'm happy with it. Recently I run into the opportunity of buying one of these used Tek 465 (not the M version) for $150. Is it worth buying and having it nowadays?

    Hello Arti, I have a question about frequency generators. Some call for a 50 ohm terminator cable . Can you explain that to me???
    Just trying to learn.
    Thank you

    • @artifactelectronics
      @artifactelectronics  Před 5 lety

      Jim, I would suggest you do a web search for "frequency generator impedance matching". There are several articles that will explain impedance matching in detail and do a better job than I would be able to do in this reply.
      However, this is a good question that I'll try to address in a future video if appropriate to the subject matter.

    All equipment has leakage current from the metal chassis to the earth ground. The Leakage current is AC leakage current and DC leakage current. when you disconnect the earth ground on the AC cord and measure the leakage current from the metal chassis to ground you will measure an AC leakage current and DC leakage current, any reasons why there is leakage current? circuit board ground should be a zero volts zero current.

    PDP 11 know nothing about it. Have you ever heard/seen of a Boroughs disk ? THAT I have seen in 1982 on my Systems Engineeing Course at CTL, Hemel Hempstaed, England. I stood on the base. 4 tons, takes 4 hours to get to 3600 rpm. 20 heads either side of a 1 inch by 6 foot mild steel disc that the heads ride on the surface. Giving 2.5 MB's of core store ! It was on the way to the scrap yard and was probably one only a very few left at the time !

    • @artifactelectronics
      @artifactelectronics  Před 6 lety

      The pins on the CRT were still there, only the wire had broken off. If the pins had broken off the CRT would have been toast.

    • @Kennynva
      @Kennynva Před 6 lety

      I thought the pins broke off the board underneath the CRT..That is what I was talking about...you could reach thru the hole and unsolder the pin on the board that broke off and replace the pin..
