I am a walking piece of art every day, with my dreams and my ambitions forward at all times in an effort to inspire my fans to lead their life in that way. Where are you watching from?
"Stillwater" rates a solid four stars out of four. Matt Damon disappears into his role as Bill Baker. *It bears repeating that this trailer is highly misleading.* It reflects nothing of the tone or content of the film. The story is about Bill, not his daughter. In August, I saw "Stillwater" in a real cinema. It was much better than I'd expected. And around me when it ended were quiet murmurs of "Wow!" "Stillwater" is not an action thriller. Nor is it meant to be a reenactment of a true story. It's a nuanced, thoughtful character drama centring on one man - Bill Baker, a laid-off oil-rig worker in Stillwater, Oklahoma - who seeks to rebuild a stable family life and mend his relationship with his estranged daughter Allison (Abigail Breslin). Bill had been mostly an absentee father while she was growing up and she was raised by her grandmother. Bill is taciturn, bluff, stoic. He can find work as a labourer for a few days or weeks at a time, and gets by as best he can. He knows he hasn't made the most of his life, but he is now clean and sober and wants to do right by his daughter. "Stillwater" is a film that requires 2¼ hours of observing and thinking. We take in the atmosphere and notice the details. This is a story of life, and love, and loss. The film's unrushed pacing is just right. We're not given any backstory laid out before us in a tidy preface. We make Bill's acquaintance bit by bit, through brief scenes of his day-to-day life. When he says he's going to see Allison again, it sounds as if he'll probably drive somewhere in his truck. *SPOILERS BELOW* Only when he receives his boarding passes at the airport do we learn that seeing Allison is not a simple thing, as the desk agent confirms that he's connecting through Atlanta and Frankfurt. His destination is the gritty rough-and-tumble southern French port city of Marseilles. Allison went to university there. She is now incarcerated there after having been convicted of a crime that landed her in prison with a nine-year sentence. She has four years left to serve. Bill has set himself the mission of getting Allison exonerated from that crime. The prison's log of Bill's visits reveals that he has made these trips many times. At his hotel Bill befriends a little girl, Maya (Lilou Siauvaud), when he does her a small act of kindness. Then he meets Maya's mother, Virginie (Camille Cottin). Here begins the heart of the story. Bill remains in Marseilles for six months, much longer than he had intended. He lives with Virginie and Maya, first as a lodger, then as something more. Very gradually, imperceptibly at first, his life perspective is being reshaped. Everyone in the story, whether in Stillwater or Marseilles, is marginalised in some way. There are no powerful or wealthy élites here, only single parents and poorly-paid jobs, and migrants who may be undocumented. These people are cogs who help make things work in our communities. Yet they are left behind as have-nots. Events and plot twists drive the story forward. Actions have consequences. In his quest to redeem himself as a father, Bill is suddenly faced with a choice and in that moment he makes a great mistake. Soon afterwards, he learns his actions have for years been guided by a tragic misjudgment. His mistake was based on that misjudgment. And he cannot go back and put things right. The ending is a punch in the gut. Having accomplished a goal which turns out to be hollow, Bill returns to Stillwater. Nothing looks the same to him any more. All too late he realises, as do we, that his opportunity for a stable family life is no longer to be found in Stillwater. It slipped through his fingers in Marseilles. "Stillwater" is a stunner. Matt Damon inhabits Bill Baker's soul brilliantly. A solid four stars out of four.

Right....but question "how do you think he did with the accent"? I don't think it's Oklahoma accent but he sure did try. And if they don't say ya'll at least once in that movie it isn't oklahoma....lol. But no it looks like a good movie that I want to see.
I am a walking piece of art every day, with my dreams and my ambitions forward at all times in an effort to inspire my fans to lead their life in that way. Where are you watching from?
"Stillwater" rates a solid four stars out of four.
Matt Damon disappears into his role as Bill Baker.
*It bears repeating that this trailer is highly misleading.*
It reflects nothing of the tone or content of the film. The story is about Bill, not his daughter. In August, I saw "Stillwater" in a real cinema. It was much better than I'd expected. And around me when it ended were quiet murmurs of "Wow!"
"Stillwater" is not an action thriller.
*SPOILERS BELOW*
Only when he receives his boarding passes at the airport do we learn that seeing Allison is not a simple thing, as the desk agent confirms that he's connecting through Atlanta and Frankfurt.

Tried to set one up earlier this week, but the process has been slow for some reason. I'll re-post my comments there when I can.
Whoa! Looks good.
Masterpiece!!
Homeboy went from Daddy to Dad.
Looks like a good role for Damon
Why? He lives outside the country.
I see an Academy Award in Matt Damon's future. Damn good acting!
I thought the ending would be Bill came back to france and fight back his love to the mother and daughter😢
A must watch.....
Is this a follow up spin off to Matt's cameo in Deadpool 2 😂

Very balanced movie ....I saw it with a friend last night ..& it was quite an adventure ...Matt plays the kind of American that is forgotten sometime ...works on a oil rig out in Oklahoma ..yea..they're rough necks ..nothing soft , You can't be, if you care about family values & the needed strength to survive in this world !
