The lights behind you are distracting, other then that great video.
YetiMacheteHD It’s kind of an ongoing process to develop put my videos will look like. Do you think they would look better outside of the frame? Still shining on my back though?
Joshua Valour I think it would be better if they were in front of u so u weren’t backlit.
@@stirling3523 Same.
@@JoshuaValour The back lighting is nice, it adds depth and makes you stand out to your background - and I agree that having them out of frame would be less distracting. Also turning off your hallway light would make you stand out more and also be less distracting. Otherwise, your content and sound and video quality is spot on! Thanks for the vid!
stirling The lights being behind you is pretty cool but maybe have a reflective ceiling and use mirrors to reflects them to your ceiling and it’ll block them out of the cameras view. I don’t know much about lighting but I’m sure it’ll work
Let's be honest. Any non-original pads change the sound signature of these headphones. Audiotechnica should finally listen to customer feedback and produce more comfortable pads.
I agree. Their stock pads are ass. Unless it like their msr7 line...or anything not in their main catalog for some god damn reason
Great video with rich information.
Great review. I understand better how your hearing works, i think that compared to mine, yours is better suited for base, because i feel my M50x have quite alot of bass. Also i feel my hearing is a bit more tolerant to highs as i find them sharp but not unpleasant.
Thanks for your cristal clear review
It's amazing the difference 6 months makes... SHP-9500 has left the building. Thanks a lot, Obama! ...er, I mean, Gibson!
For anyone looking at this in the future, SHPs are currently going for $140+ on Amazon/Newegg, and $120+ on Ebay... There's a bunch of ones from China that say they're genuine at $100 on Ebay tho? Supply has dried up, and I'm a bit sad because they were fantastic for their price point, with obscene levels of comfort...
On the subject of this video, the M40x's are fantastic headphones IMO for music. Josh, your videos are great and seeing the improvement in quality from this video to your current ones is a treat. Keep it up if you can, but don't get burned out!
HEARDS THE RETCH INSTRUMENTAL AND INSTANTLY SUBSCRIBED
Very usefull video thx a lot !
This is actually underrated. Its low end for example is far better than many. Not as thumpy but very detailed still. This one is a recommendation worthy of being alongside the SHP9600 on your A Tier list with DMS that you'd made a year ago.
Yep . I am choosing these over akg k361 and shp9600.akg pure durability . So ath m40x is better
Its weird changing from a gaming headset which has a stong bass to the audio technica which has equal bass and trebel. The sound was good tho
Nice intro. Good quality video.
Hi Joshua,
I'm receiving those soon, Any idea if the M70 pads fits? What concerns me about the Brainwave is the soundstage change reviewers keep mentioning.
Would you recommend angled or flat earpads? What's the difference for each?
Would love to see your thoughts on these vs the Takstar Pro 82!
Thanks for advice for changing the pads to Brains - m40x sounds quite better.
It really sounds better? Because they made my ath-pro5x sound weird, loss of mids and way too much bass now. I'm actually considering just getting m40x if they really combine that well with these pads, as I did come to like the comfort.
@@Broformist if the price M40X were 100$ ish then get the akg k36, i got the m40x cause its more cheaper
@@Wylabn I'm not looking to get any more headphones. I have ATH PRO5X and they sound great to me. Shit I got a chance to compare them with friends m50x not long ago and I much prefer how Pro5X sounds. Plus it's lighter and more comfortable. And almost half the price.
I have the shp9500 as well, they really sound amazing, but I'm in love with the sound signature of the T50rp mkiii, they are so detailed, great sounds stage, great bass response, the most pleasant sound that I have heard, Can you review this cans please?
Could you tell me how is the passive isolation on your fostex cans? Thx
I just bought a set of these for my birthday and really like them. I'm a professional musician and a learning audiophile. I like to listen to hq audio tracks on CZcams and Spotify with my Galaxy S9+.
I've been trying various equalizer apps to customize the frequencies to my ears.
I also really like listening to Binaural Beats when I sleep. I really like to feel the sound, not just hear it. When I can feel the sound frequencies, it's like being a band member or being in the audience!
Any advice to get the best possible performance for these headphones would be very much appreciated.
Are there any apps or tools I can use to calibrate not only my headphones but my car audio and home theater systems as well?
I'm still learning what all of the terms are and how they affect the sound. Any recommended CZcams tutorials?
Spotify has a really cool EQ feature that plays a frequency pulse in each ear one at a time and asks you if you can hear it. After completing the calibration the music sounds amazing with these headphones on and through the bluetooth in my car!
The only problem is that it is NOT system wide, so it only works in the Spotify app itself.
Is there any system wide apps that can do this feature on android?
Ever learning,
Joe P. (aka Master Joeda) 😊🎸🎶🎧🎤🎛🎙🎚🎹😁
Try out Viper Audio if you don't mind losing warranty on the phone because of root. Otherwise, samsung do have their own (admittedly lesser) eq in the sound settings, if you fancy that. The best improvement, however, would be to get a portable DAC (I can't recommend any of the portable ones, as I haven't tried them, but they guarantee some higher quality). Finally, if you're into it, download high quality files and use a player like the fiio official music app to get true lossless audio.
Shp9500 are for the ones that like detail and clarity. arent the greatest but yes, they are worth trying them. (a lot)
I can back you up, the Philips SHP9500s are great.
Thanks Boss!
Hell no! Shp 9500 isn't a flat headphone. It sounds like garbage. Full of sibilance and harshness
@@robertlesmana5291 lol try beats
@@marvil9205 I wouldn't go as far as Robert lemana but I own the shp9500 and they are elevated and a little rough in the treble, and a little shy in the bass.
For the price they're not bad but I don't hear them as headphones to rave over like so many people do.
The older Senn. hd 558 and Senn hd 598 sound better but they are, were, more expensive than the shp 9500.
You can still buy the Senn hd 598 but the hd 558 have been discontinued.
Great review! What kind of portable DAC or Amp would you suggest to use with these headphones?
You don't want an amp with headphones unless they are above 40 ohms, and need one above 60 ohms
Hey Joshua, I think the background music does not go well with your soothing voice. I feel relaxed when I listen to you, but when the annoying siren sound of the background music comes up, It upsets me, and kinda makes me feel nervous.
yes i agree
V-MODA M100!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They are the best all around headphones have used. They have verry clean solid thumping bass that hits every single note. The highs are amazing there crisp clear . They also sound amazing on games and movies. I have lots of headphones and these are the one headphone to do it all. If you're looking for that set of headphones that you can take everywhere and do it all. Buy these. Music is crazy good as well as games and movies. I have not tried editing on these so not sure. But these go for $250 but you can find them for $150 if you look around.
what would be the difference between the Brainwavz HM5 angled and not angled for my Audio Technica M40X? and would Memory foam or plain leather be better and whats the difference between the two?
To me its simple, 1% or 2% increased of soundstage but the rest of the sound is slightly receesed by 2 %. Depending on your usage and song varies. Especially whether with amplification or shih audio device
Hey man please review DT 770 pro 32 ohm
Am I really to believe these Brainwavz pads don't change the sound signature of m40x at all? I got angled pleather ones for my ath-pro5x because so many youtubers seem to be praising these pads. And while comfort is hugely increased, the sound changed very significantly to the point where I'm unsure if I wanna use them. Increased sound stage is nice but it also made them have way too much bass and I'm pretty sure I lost quite a bit of detail in mids.
Valour? Did you try the Velour pads? Would be fitting eh mate?
I've been using these for a year and I still don't know if I like them, it's insane.
I bought the Brainwavz angled sheepskin pads for the ATH-m50x and was shocked to learn that earphones don't have to crush my ear lobes. These pads actually cup my ear. My ears are so big that I'd resigned myself to thinking this is just how things were going to be. Not an audiophile, so my cans still sound about the same to me.
Do you recommend the brainwavz for the M50X? some indian youtuber says they suck on them lol, I'm more used to a bayerdynamic shape of hearphone that doesn't crush my ears, my M50X are expected to arrive tomorrow and I wanna see if they bother me I'll get these Brainwavz
It kills the singature, don't go for HM 5 brain waiz
i prefer the m40x to the m50x. i still need something close to reference but i still really like having an enjoyable listening experience. i love these headphones, they work so well for me, and they're also pretty cheap when compared to a lot of other options. the headphones i had before this sounded almost exactly the same, if not a little worse, way less comfortable, and were $100 more! some deprecated sony cans that i can't remember the name of.
This vs dt770 for mixing?
WHICH PADS SHOULD I BUY FOR THE M40X?????
I'm so confused at this point, someone says the regular HM5s are good, some say they sound like shit and the angled ones are better, some say the angled ones suck, some say the 840 pads are a better choice, some say they suck and the HM5s are better, I have no idea what to believe. Someone says the ZMF Cowhides are the best fucking thing since sliced bread, then someone comes out and says they absolutely suck. Should I just message someone and have them measure the M40X with all the pads? I really do be depressed rn ngl
If you have a conclusion or practical experience can you share it with us? Thank you
Intro song please
dt 770's or these for dreampop?
I'd choose the DT770s purely because the soundstage is better which helps with the ambience that dreampop heavily relies on
Is it still viable ,?
I've heard numerous people say that the hm5 pads kill the bass.
indeed, i bought a non-angled hybrid hm5 pads and all bass lost, as well as if you dont put back the thin foam that is there in the stock pads the highs screech like crazy. I immediately swapped back to stock pads.
@@kronauer88 did you use the filters from the stock pads?
@@Lindaine yes, i actually need that filter to get well controlled highs
The pleather angled ones actually made my ath-pro5x have way too much bass..
Listening to this on my m40x ;)
I also bought the m40x and the brainwavz angled pads. But I found them a bit uncomfortable (my ears touched the back of the pads). Which pads are you using?
@@diogonibus Hi, do you mind telling me if tour M40 sounds different with the new pads, if It was the case they sound better or worse than with the original stock pads. Thanks in advance! Hope you can help me.
Great Review! 100% agree with Joshua. Had M50x and gifted them to a friend. Went to try M40x after buying SE 846, IE 800s and HD660s and was blown away. 20-30 hours of burn in brought more details and tamed treble a bit. I tried wicked pads, similar to BWs and went back to stock pads as large ones (super comfy) alter the sound signature. I realized that you must wear stock for quite a long time (through the pain) and they become much better - I noticed a huge difference at M40s demo model in store. I also bought a short New Fantasia cable which I feel improved sound details and they are my closed back portable end game.
@@leonardorohr9261 if change the pads to angled ones, the sound did change but more fun and wider sound. Idk if that a good thing or a bad thing but for me personally i like it alot and i could wear them a whole day
I recently just got a pair of Sennheiser HD 4.50 BTNC headphones. I really love the sound because I haven't tried anything as high quality before. I do have one problem though, the earpads are way to tight and it feels like a vice on my head. Is there any earpads that would resolve this issue to make it more comfortable to where them for long sessions?
A bit late idk if this is still an issue, but this problem can be solved by stretching the headphone over a box or something to loosen the clamping force.
I don't want to change my ath-m40x sound signature(little increase of bass won't be a fact) but I want to have comfort and little thick cushions and want durability please suggest me Sir
ZMF oval cushions / cow leather
You have really good content on your channel, you seem to know what you are talking about, why you have so few audience, I think you miss something, nevertheless I love to follow your channel, good and informative content
are good for gaming? is it better than cloud alpha?
Go with cooler master mh 751 or 752
Can one use a generic 3.5 mm female TRS to 2.5mm male TRS adapter with the M40x? Want to be able to attach a boom mic ( www.amazon.in/dp/B08BZ9G4WQ ) that way.
Are the earpads easy to swap?
You need to use a bit of force but not something crazy.. did it many time on mine
Do you have gravel in your throat? I envy your voice!
The soundsignature changes strangely with other pads and not for the good. Using other earpads on the m50x, (the Shure 840 pads), I still prefer over the m40x.
Joshua how does the sound signature of the M40s compare to the M1060 (besides M1060 being open) since it seems like both reproduce low, mids, and highs evenly and well.
Would the M1060 be like the open version big brother to the M40s or are they more different than that.
Fulano de Tal These are not really similar in sound at all. The m40s, while lively, sound cold. They slip into that “reference” type of sound. I can appreciate that sound. As long as it’s got life to it. Which these do, but not the same as the 1060s. M40s are a workhorse that can also be fun. Whereas the m1060 are made for only fun. The m1060s have an extremely open sound which gives you that “in the room” sound as if you were standing there. Where the m40s, you feel like you are in the listening booth. Still sounds good. But it doesn’t have that breath of life the m1060s have.
Of course, those are $200 more. So..... kinda makes sense.
Joshua Valour awesome yeah that openness is needed in the M40s. i was intrigued by the M1060 because people like how they reproduce lows mids and highs well. Would you say the M1060 reproduces them evenly or do they favor some frequencies. Like, boosted frequences. I love the M40s for their flatness and i would love if the M1060 also were flat too.
Fulano de Tal it has highs, mids and lows even, yes. But, not flat, if that makes any sense?
Joshua Valour intriguing ive never had planar headphones so i'll look more into them thanks for such quick replies man and thanks for the informative vids and i really like the intro 👌
Look like z review has a competitor excellent reviews
zeos isnt really very good imo
These or Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro?
Dt 770 pro ,and also its different price. M40x tends to more budget friendly (84$) while the dt770 pro cost like 220$ - 225$
hay qua
Could you review the M50xBT? The sound, to my knowledge, is better than the M50x’s.
From what I've heard they are exactly the same but they are bt, nothing has been changed
Lol just dont twist the cable or lock the cable if you accidently yanked it
Shp are to sharp for me, hd58x are better for me
The editing in this video is distracting . It’s like watching Max Headroom.
The mids are recesed
true!
This is literally the exact same review that zeos did.
M50X are atrocious. Some of the worst I have heard. M40x completely on the other end. One of the best closed backs I have heard. I think they are underrated of headphones under even $250 headphones. I tried these at Guitar Center and they sounded better than everything there. Of course they don't have Grado or Fostex.
Sounds so tired in this review
M50x are not reference quality. Not even prosumer quality.
I'm with u buddy
