It’s a payoff for a vote to hold the RWC in NZ. It’s why they played in Japan.
What an understatement. On my first visit to the USA 50 years ago I watched a tv showing a packed American football stadium busy doing American hype. In the background outside the stadium one could see a rugby game with 30 players and about 30 spectators. There’s nothing new about rugby in America that NZ can bring. Your sevens, since it became an Olympic sport, are world class. It’s America itself that holds 15 person rugby back.
I was at that game. The Americans around me knew little about the game but enjoyed themselves immensely, and I was happy to be able to explain the rules
I was there too, there were thousands of current and former club players from across the country that day.
Just a small correction rugby union has laws not rules

This is almost a decade ago, time flies. I think NZ, and the USA only played each other once, prior to this, at the 1991 Rugby World Cup.

Half the people in that stadium didnt even know what rugby was...after my visit there last year they still dont know they have a national team and this is the country hosting the world cup after Austrailia??? A joke
You may be right but we will see. Brett Gosper was as nervous as hell about Japan, That tournament to me stood out as one of the best.

It’s like every other World Cup.
With the way the world economy is going every country to apply to host any World Cup should be welcome and it also makes the entire world a very small place for the game of Rugby!
One way you need to look at a country like USA playing and competing is which ever the league or union they decide to join USA will bring more financial help to the game as well!
@@user-xg6vw2ro5b That is exactly right. It was astounding that they packed so many in to enjoy what they all knew, was going to a game that the All blacks would win.
It was a great exhibition and the crowd got to see a clinical and sometimes Flamboyant game of Rugby. We saw a similar thing when the Maori All blacks faced off against the U.S, and that was a mouth watering encounter. Not to mention Japan who hosted ( and competed in) a fabulous World Cup, to my mind it was just awesome.
Will the U.S produce some similar results as Japan? I would have to see it to believe it, but when I think about it, I0 years ago I would not have expected to be citing Japan as a such a positive case.
Clearly though, the game of Rugby Union has supporters in more places than we usually expect.

America can host a world cup it has stadiums and is well organised other countries are not as fortunate.

This was an exhibition match to appease sponsor AIG. There will be more meaningless games like this one for the All Blacks, and they'll risk player injury and deterioration of their brand just so they can scrape as many dollars as they can for Silver Lake.
On the opposite side of this, this was one of the matches that helped to spark the presence of rugby here in the US, especially in getting the MLR started up here. So what one may think is meaningless to one side is meaningful to another.

@@prr7209 exactly. If I remember correctly, Ma’a Nonu was in the AB side for this match; this may have been one of the reasons he committed to playing for San Diego in the MLR here.
