Mark always asks “what is the most important lesson you’ve learned in your life? ”. I’ve watched most of the interviews and Melissa gave the best answer to this question hands down. “To be humane, considerate and compassionate.” My heart skipped a beat and i felt choked up. Yes sweetheart, this should be the answer we all give to that question. Oh Melissa, thank you for that pearl. You are such a good, kind person and I pray you get off drugs, get healthy and return to your family. I think your job is done on skid row. You have helped many unfortunate people and now you need to give a good life to yourself. You have earned the right to be happy tenfold. I will always remember your words of wisdom. Thank you.
She watched a pimp beat a young girl and she helped her scape by manipulating the pimp and that’s what’s she proudest of. I love that she cared about that young woman. She said the pimp was schizophrenic. She is very smart. She doesn’t trust the food given out at the food banks.
She didn't learn that much that she was able to apply unfortunately.... She does take the consequences of her choices like a real tuff person though...not looking for any pity or feeling sorry for herself.
It's such a shame, the glow from her eyes is quickly dimming from the incredibly difficult life she's endured. She's such a sweet lady and seems to have a great heart and soul, I hope she can escape this hard life she's living
It tore my mother apart. A woman that was extremely intelligent. She was an engineer and an artist. Yes that woman worked both sides of her brain. Unfortunately she wasn't smart enough to pull away from drugs. Once they hit a certain point, some of them get caught in a repetition of just negative feed they latch on to something negative that happened in their life and they can't let go of it. Over and over and over this happened to my mom. It's so sad to witness such a beautiful intelligent woman lose absolutely everything including her beauty and life.
One of my cousins was the same age as me, just 3 months apart. She started using by 14, I never touched anything. She died of an overdose 2 months before her 40th birthday. She looked 20 years older than me. Skin hanging and sagging, no teeth, strange scars and a strange color to her skin. Her hygiene was questionable at best on her good days. It was a very stark contrast, the two of us; so close yet so far apart.
Everyone is focusing on her looks. She honestly sounds like a great person, and her words are really eye opening for me. When she spoke about being humane, and also her life experiences, are so telling. She is talking of a spiritual awakening, and, although I’m no where near that, I definitely think she’s helping me get there. Really inspiring.

Her looks have obviously taken a turn but I can’t help believe that she really did slow down a lot on the crack. She speaks a little fast, but she has a good vocabulary and is actually pretty articulate. I hope her health issues persuade her to really get right, maybe get her head on straight.. it’s never too late
Oh you can hear it in her voice and you can see it within her movements. Before how she was always moving spinning fiddling and fidgeting. Now she's sitting pretty still looking directly at the person interviewing her. She speaks a lot more clearly. You can hear it within the vibration of her voice.
If you look at her prior photo, around 2 minutes, it transitions into her current photo and I tried to really see where the "looks" changed.... to be honest? I think her skin and her face and everything looks about the same, I don't think her looks turned so much as she cut her hair and she's wearing a baggier top. I think I believe her too, that she slowed down, because if she hadn't there would be bigger differences visually I think than just a haircut and different clothes.

Especially stimulants like crack and meth, they wreak havoc on the immune system. And the fact that you smoke it doesn't do anyone any favors. There was a guy I knew who smoked crack on a daily basis. He had a really nice smile and looked nice, like an average person. I saw him walking down the street not even a year later and said hi, and when he began talking I was shook because half of his teeth were gone and the other half were cracked in half. Scared the living shit out of me.
I've met so many people from all walks of life. This interview has confirmed what I've always felt. Sometimes the more you have the more you lose sight of humanity. The more people feel lose sight of being grateful for today and being lucky you see tomorrow. Melissa has very little and is truly grateful for all she has. Thank you Melissa for your insight and showing us your humanity.
I am sorry for the loss of your sister. She seems like a wonderful person. If I was stuck out there, I am sure I would have called her my friend. At least in her heart, she knew you loved her. I hope your grief has eased somewhat. Hugs.
I don't want to sound corny, but you can also see it as: the tragedy that has befallen this woman has brought compassion and empathy into your being. And that to me means there's still some hope in the world; when us, complete strangers, can feel sympathy towards this person we don't even know.
Her sister is the hero. The angel of the family. Taking care of everyone. Melissa talks about being psychologically strong to live on the streets, but an actuality it's the sister who has to be psychologically strong. Heartbreaking and devastating if this was your sister sitting here and there's nothing you can do to help her .🫂😞
I agree. Nobody ever talks about the family behind the scenes, quietly taking care of the responsibilities and paying the bills and dealing with all of the baggage they do not want to deal with. Often times, people look at them and say "Why don't you do more?" when it comes to their addicted loved one. Its really quite an unfair position to be in, often times one that you're simply born into. They've been through all the same things in childhood, sometimes even more, and yet because they managed to stay sober and get a life together, their struggle means nothing. They must just be "strong" and therefore should be caretakers. I empathize greatly with her sister, truly. It would be nice if Mark interviewed some of these family members that are taking care of the children of these addicts, and hear their stories. I would like that.
I’m so happy to hear that you’re staying out of the chaos a bit. I hope the best for you all around and your health and happiness. Know that I’m rooting for you. 💛
Melissa nice to see you ! I hope you get your hip done soon. My brother just had his & it was only a day in the hospital & a week he was walking regular. Back in the old days it was a big deal now they have it down to fixing us up quick. I hope you do your hip & all your medical stuff take care of yourself ❤️
She’s not happy here, and she passed recently, so she doesn’t have to put up with the pain anymore…she also knew her sister still loved her and was on the way to get her, but she was already gone
It would be interesting to hear an interview with Melissa's sister. I wonder what her take on her childhood would sound like, and what her life has been like carrying Melissa's responsibilities and being a caretaker for her family.
@@marylougeorge9890 are you even a real person or someone hired just to tell people to watch other things Mark has done. The other commenter is right, you are an Uber Gatekeeper
@Aqua Lung there are two commenters one who has claimed to have met/had a casual friendly relationship with Mark who always want to "set commenters straight " on "what it's all really about". Anyone on the Internet Could be Any one. Any one who makes films, even actors, could be ANYONE. Take everything with a grain of salt. You don't need to accuse people of being dishonest, but do believe me when I say: Stay Vigilant, stay alert. Question everything PUT in Front of You. Just like Mr.Phil McGraw isn't a doctor, neither am I. There are lots of people on this world, creators and producers and good old fashioned normal folks. The creative types always have a *special* way about them.
The fact that despite all the horrors she's witnessed and experienced, she still says her kindness and humanity are what are most important to her. It's always the people who have the worst experiences that somehow manage to still have a heart of gold. I hope she is able to get her health in order, she has a good head on her shoulders, sometimes clouded by addiction and demons, but a good mind and a beautiful heart none the less.
Mark, I feel like your videos would be so much more valuable to young people than any class taught at school. If they required every high school student to watch so many hours of video, perhaps incorporated into a health class required to graduate, just imagine the lives that could be changed. All the bad decisions that may be prevented.. your work is remarkable. You deserve so much more recognition. People need to see this stuff.
The fatal assumption is that ' .. everything is predestined .. it's already written for you'. Defeated before you even address it. I have to give this lady kudos for her reporting the child abusers. All she's been through and she still has her heart and soul .
No one would be predestined to a horrible life like that. If she's referring yo making stupid decisions and getting messed up with drugs then yes ,it rarely goes well.
@ Jason Braga If you’re interested, that’s a link to a fascinating interview that Mark gave to the Koncrete channel. Welcome & Enjoy the videos! (YT wouldn’t let me post with my comment.)
My heart aches for this girl! I pray that she finds her way out! 2 years of this lifestyle/ addiction has robbed this poor girl of so much. May God Bless her!🙏❤️
Mark needs to show allllll these other people who say things like, no way am I going to stay down here, this is just temporary, I’m not going to be walking around for ever like these other people, so they can visually see what their future is probably going to look like. In the older clip of this lady you can tell she really thought she was going to be different. I often see other people in Mark’s videos say the exact same thing. I’m glad the streets and tough living hasn’t robbed her of her compassion and desire to be a good person.
God bless you Melissa. My heart goes out to her. Drugs destroy lives in so many ways. I pray that her health gets better. You deserve love and happiness ❤️🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
How in the world did this woman survive ?That little "you're welcome" she said at the end is heartbreaking. This is a little girl scared in a worn, scarred, broken women's' body.
@@thematriarchy2075 it is a fact though if she started doing crack she says at 17 people are often emotionally arrested at the age at which they start doing drugs. So in many ways she probably never matured emotionally simply by being a lifelong addict.
@@thematriarchy2075 - Rob above is correct in his comment. No matter what age you start doing drugs you can be emotionally broken from that point on, whether you feel for the person or not is irrelevant but it is a proven fact..
@@ROFO79 Child sexual abuse can do the same thing. So many of the people here are victims of sexual abuse. It is heartbreaking to see all the pain that these addicts feel.
She really does seem to have a lot of compassion. She's 100% right about not losing your own humanity over the way other people act, I finally learned that lesson. Doesn't mean you have to deal with those people anymore and let them take advantage of you, but you also don't have to allow yourself to become like them. The quote goes something like..."harboring hate is like drinking poison and expecting your enemy to die". Hate truly will consume you and harden everything positive inside you. I hope she stays away from the fast life and looks after her health, lives out the rest of her life happy and healthy ❤️
The stories at the end...wow, people can be so evil and disgusting. I can't imagine being in that life. I already don't trust "normal" people. And out there everything is to an extreme and intensity that I wouldn't be able to deal with. Literally pedophiles, rapists, murders, sociopaths, etc all taking advantage of everyone.
That would be really wild. I worry about the noises I hear when I'm behind the closed doors of my house... I can't imagine not even having that protection. Like she said, people raising their kids out there 💔
@@brennaeidenier6537 just the thought of living in America would scare me let alone being on the streets there ( well unless u have millions n can live in a gated community somewhere.
@@davechristian7543 She said it in the video, The human mind won't believe/understand anything until they see it with their own eyes. Trust me America is HUGE! Thousands of square miles are actually entirely empty and beautiful forest or small towns that have very little crime. I was born in Los Angeles myself, We used to go to Skid row when I was little and my Grandmas Church would have me hand out sandwiches to the People down there and this was in the 80's. I don't live there anymore I live in Colorado which is a beautiful Endless Forest with only a few big cities otherwise Hundreds of miles of peaceful Forest, So see you gotta think big when you think about other Countries they all have their good and bad.
She is talking about some creep who showed her that Sickening shit on his computer to get off so it's not happening in the streets lol. I my self was a wild MF'r and used needles and every drug ever and delt with Prostitutes' that were my friends and all that life, You gotta be cut from a different stained cloth to handle it. I got clean now luckily.
@@koffinkat666 oh yeah, I suppose I meant I wouldn't normally bump into these people any other way unless I had to do stuff to survive on the streets. But now I'm thinking these people look normal anyway and I'd have no real idea who is this disturbing by just walking by them or having a casual conversation; it can be my coworkers or even casual friends. I don't know what people do in their house, to their kids, etc. It kinda scares me to be around most people.
I pray she is able to get all her health concerns taken care of. I really want to see her doing better. It's never to late! prayers and blessings to you.
I absolutely love this woman. She has more heart than I ever expected. Had drugs not been a part of her life, I see her being a nurse, helping and healing others. ❤
Melissa's interviews are always very eye-opening. It's difficult to see someone stuck in a cycle that seems impossible to break. As human beings we are not invincible and addictions can happen to anyone. All all actions have consequences and we cannot escape that. Sometimes we cannot see the consequences of our actions until it is too late. I'm glad we were able to see Melissa again and hear her insight.
I made videos like this with a hand held camera back in 2000 when it was no CZcams its was drug addicts by my house I'd talk to and film just because it was mind blowing what people would do to themselves with drugs some were ex lawyers and teachers and ex rich kids it was🤯
I literally gasped when I saw the difference between then and now! She looks like she's at least 70 and before about 45 or so. How sad that she continued to destroy herself and it's not just about looks because that's really not as important as her health. All the horrible things taken and consumed show up on the outside of our bodies as they destroy the insides. I pray this poor lady doesn't suffer in pain as she gets older. You can tell she has a kind soul and really cares about people but never about herself. I seriously hope she got info, license plates of the sick pedophiles and reported them. Somebody needs to do that so if someone is out there is reading this and knows something...report them ASAP. My God I hope that more people realize what a sick, sick world it is and stay the hell away from drugs, the streets and protect their children with their lives. Never trust anyone... I know it sounds terrible but too many kids are hurt by their own parents, boyfriends, relatives and so on. I also remember that in her first interview she said she had a perfect fairytale childhood and I knew that was likely not true. Melissa, if you read this, please know that I care about you and I know other people do too. I hope you are seeing a good doctor and that your health improves. Take good care of yourself sweet lady
I agree, she's fine. She's clear minded. Those 2019 photos she wearing make up. These commenters think every one should be a Barbie Doll. That's not how it works. But she's fine.
She looks way rougher but at the same time it looks like she pretty much got of the drugs and is in a better place. Will be interesting to see if she keeps things up.
I went to ask for a follow up and here she is! I'm glad to see Melissa is alive. She's got all the answers. She knows what's up. If politicians were to listen..really listen..they'd find the answers. Our "system" is messed up! Sweet Melissa. She's so smart and truly has alot to offer. I pray she's okay.
@@girloctober2613 Indeed. You look great for your age. I'm gonna be 35 in September. Don't feel it or look like it in my opinion. It's all in the lifestyle one lives. Sure I have my fun and throw some drinks down but nothing crazy. Keep living that boring life. Lol.
Poor mama...she reminds me of my grandma...thing is my Grams was as straight edge as they come. wouldn't even take a Tylenol. but she did get sick and despite her incredible strength being sick for so long wore her down...miss you grandma Irma💚😢

My counselling-psychotherapy class is currently watching a number of these amazing stories. Repeatedly I see these incredible, intelligent humans who have not been given the opportunity to heal from destructive life trauma. Some suffering mental illness and drug addiction to escape the pain of mental illness. What the hell is wrong with a government to doesn't care about the people?
There are many, but for me personally, one of THE most heartbreaking aspects of all of the stories on SWU is that almost none of these people are able to properly deal with all the violence they are subjected to and experience. Learning that so much crime can go unpunished is truly devastating. Furthermore, it becomes internalized as normal in their everyday life. I think with the exception of death, every single type of crime against a humanity has been portrayed, spoken of, alluded to and depicted in these stories. How can this be okay? Ever. Rest In Peace, Melissa.

Missy, you warm my heart. You have the courage to protect children and babies. God bless you! Thank you for lookin out!

Those passing 2 years took so much with them...this breaks my heart to pieces.
She’s not happy here, and she passed recently, so she doesn’t have to put up with the pain anymore…she also knew her sister still loved her and was on the way to get her, but she was already gone
@@ryanjavierortega8513 thanks for letting me know 💔
I think she’s being honest about having a spiritual awakening, this is why she seems so different than previous interview.
It would be interesting to hear an interview with Melissa's sister. I wonder what her take on her childhood would sound like, and what her life has been like carrying Melissa's responsibilities and being a caretaker for her family.
True, I like a multi faceted perspective.
Seeing Amanda's father was strange... and some other potential relatives.

Only 2yrs....oh my goodness this poor lady
The fact that despite all the horrors she's witnessed and experienced, she still says her kindness and humanity are what are most important to her. It's always the people who have the worst experiences that somehow manage to still have a heart of gold. I hope she is able to get her health in order, she has a good head on her shoulders, sometimes clouded by addiction and demons, but a good mind and a beautiful heart none the less.
This is heartbreaking. I wish her nothing but the best.

Melissa, I'm proud of how compassionate you are. Please continue. Take care. Peace.
While Amanda might be the most prominent success story, there are many others who go the opposite direction. Get well soon bby
Thank you for sharing your story. Keep strong. You’re doing great.
I’m in class watching this, but hey... this woman is powerful ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

What an incredible woman. I learn from all of the people on these videos
I'm so very glad you have housing. I'm so very sorry for your scary and traumatizing experiences in this world. You are important and you matter.
How in the world did this woman survive ?That little "you're welcome" she said at the end is heartbreaking. This is a little girl scared in a worn, scarred, broken women's' body.
Don't infantilize her. Thanks

You are absolutely amazing!! Im praying for you girl!!
Wow! At least she takes accountability for her actions. These stories always make me so sad.
I absolutely love this woman. She has more heart than I ever expected. Had drugs not been a part of her life, I see her being a nurse, helping and healing others. ❤
Yes, I think you’re right...she would’ve been a wonderful nurse.
She is a beautiful spirit and a pretty woman. Even through the damage from the drugs, u can see it. So sad.
I took so much away from what she said. There is wisdom to be heard in all walks of life. You don’t know me, but I love you Melissa. 💕
I made videos like this with a hand held camera back in 2000 when it was no CZcams its was drug addicts by my house I'd talk to and film just because it was mind blowing what people would do to themselves with drugs some were ex lawyers and teachers and ex rich kids it was🤯
Rest in Peace and Blessed Be, Melissa. Sincere condolences to family and friends for the loss of your loved one.

Good Luck Melissa, you seem to have a very kind heart. Hope you get your medical treatment you need. God Bless.
She’s ready for help. It’s wrecked her body n spirit bless her. ❤️

Wow what a smart lady. So glad she survived the madness .
This lady is so freaking intelligent and likes to help ppl and has a firm grasp on reality yet she can't help herself or her kids grandkids or mother. That's the sad part. I pray she makes a comeback bc she seems like a really good person
