Fascinating. So helpful to have a better understanding of the events of the time, and how the texts we have fit into it, even as they are timeless.

I was glad to hear more about the virtue of justice and love. Our world is in need of this. And combined together with all the other Stoic virtues and principles it is a powerful force of good.
I often see this, the importance and expression of justice and love, lacking in Stoic communities on the internet.

Summum Bonum , what is the good? And there is nothing better than the good, is having some ability and using that ability to create: Wisdom, Courage, Justice, and Temperance. ..it tells me that what we take to heart and apply to our lives makes all the difference
.you can’t for instance blame Marcus Aurelius for failing his son Commodus, because his son didn’t take Stoic thought to heart and apply it
..whereas their is evidence that those such as Epictetus who took an interest in Stoic thought and applied it in their lives - reaped the reward of confidence in Stoic philosophy as a result.

The most recent by Robin Waterfield, which is also annotated is very good. Most modern translations are good - people tend to struggle more with the old (public domain) translations from before the middle of the 20th century. Gregory Hays is the most popular translation but not quite as literal as most of the others.
