How to teach a dog to walk on leash - Shiba Inu Edition

  • How's it going folks! In today's video I show you all how to teach your dog (and yourself) loose leash walking. In the first half of the video I explain the reasoning's as to why dogs might pull on the leash to give the human a chance to understand where the dog is coming from, and that they are in fact, an animal not a human. That still doesn't excuse any behavior that might drag the person at the other end of the leash through the dirt and mud! However, before any owner starts blaming their dog for their bad behavior, they should look into their own behavior and body language and how it might affect the dog's training. Remember, never blame the dog, if your dog does anything you don't like, it was likely a human mistake that caused the issue in the first place. Even so, don't let that discourage you, just listen to what your dog is telling you and work together to be the best team possible!
    This type of lesson will take time. Learning anything new is a process not an event. Take breaks when you need to and have fun with your dog! =D
    Let me know what you want to see next time and remember to stay positive!

    I just got an 8 week old Shiba pup and I just realised that although my current dog (a Border Collie) is damn near perfect, can I hell as like remember how I did that (I had her from a tiny pup too!). I love that this video not only explained how to do the leash training but the psychology behind it too. Very cool and informative! Thanks so much 😊😊

      That's awesome, keep up the great work!! Lol I know what you mean about a Shiba not being impressed with a leash! I had my Shiba pup drag a leash around for most of the day when he was a wee potato for the first couple of months. If I couldn't watch him, he would be tethered to his crate, or placed in a puppy pen. Luckily I never had any issues with him accepting a harness and leash 😅🐶

    So... this dog accepts treats, my shiba doesn't. Like he likes me, he comes and cuddles with me... but he turns into a screaming banshee whenever I try to train him... because if I don't let him pull and drive the walk and choke himself, he will scream, even if all I do is a light tug. I don't have a yard because we live in an apartment so I really am at a loss... this is the 10th video I've watched and the dog doesn't behave anything like how my dog behaves when following the exact steps

    My female Shiba has a pretty small head so it's tough finding a harness the she can't slip out of. She'll bring her head down to her feet and stretch out, off comes the harness. This only happened a couple times when she was in her crazy zoomie(we call "crackhead") moment and only if I pull hard on the leash

  • @coltrag6954
    @coltrag6954 Před 2 lety +7

    My Shiba is an angel at home, but as soon as a leash is put on she turns into a crackhead. She's usually all over the place and she goes full mental when she sees other people and dogs. I want to socialize her with other dogs but the way my dog freaks out with excitement scares older dogs to snapping at my dog. I've had stubborn dogs before but this Shiba is determined to call the shots lol.

    Probably the best “true to life” training to walk video I’ve seen. I have a shiba who pulls like crazy except when we loop the leash through her front legs. After she walks a bit its a little better. She does the “backing up thing” because she seems to of hated harnesses. She has gotten loose twice and is very scary here in Florida when that happens. Right now we use a rope harness. She has chewed out of 4 other ones and this worked. But MAN does it get tight. Seems like the chewing has gone away. But not a huge fan of the rope harness.
    Any recommendations on comfy (not confusing) harnesses? She pulled out of a collar and a flat-leash kind of collar. The other two we had were like jacket neoprene harnesses. She loved them. I’m sure they were delicious.

      I like to recommend a martingale collar as it's used in many cases for escape proof dog collars, or you might try an x harness that is also escape proof. It uses the same idea as the martingale. Btw so sorry for the super late reply, I didn't even see these messages! Good luck with your pupper, hope you all are doing well!

    Hey there, just subscribed. Loved your video especially after watching one from Peter Caine, uck. I was wondering if you have any tips for the dreaded Shiba sit. My 1 year old Shiba Leif loves to just plop his but down whenever and stare off into the distance. He gets really jumpy when i bring treats on walks so I've had the habit of just tugging and forcing him to keep walking so he doesn't think I'll just allow the behavior, but I dont like the look of forcing him to keep walking. I use a harness with so im not pulling him by the neck, but i feel like i look like a bad owner tugging his dog along behind him. If he needs to poop he walks great and stays ahead of me looking for a spot to squat, but as soon as he's done his business he's back to stopping every dozen or so steps. It's a specific behaviour i cant seem to find a video on, its always how to stop your dog from pulling, not how to stop pulling your dog. My partner and i would love to get some excercise to, but we can never keep any kind of pace. Thanks in advance, i can see you're great at replies 😊

    Hello, so I just watched this and it was wonderful but my dog is really different. He’s just three years old and I’ve been working with him since he was eight weeks old doing all the right things and from eight weeks old he’s been pulling on leashes even though I’ve stopped every time he went to pull and it’s just frustrating now he’s three years old and I believe I’ve done everything correct I even did try to use a head halter, but he hurt his head and neck with that so I don’t use it anymore. I use a harness with two leashes.
    He’s just super hyper all the time so it would go outside and before I even take one step he’s pulling, and I tried waiting for him to go loose a little bit, and then I would either click and treat or say yes, we got to the point where we really couldn’t go even take two or three steps, and I’ve tried the method where you go the opposite way when they pull on the leash. I’ve actually tried a lot of methods. I’m just lost and what to do and maybe nobody can really help. Maybe it’s just him and I am going to have to except who he is anyway, this was very good and It put a smile on my face to see your dog so calm and walking by your side my dog loves to work. He has a drive that no dog I’ve ever seen has and he will kind of stay at my side but all he does is bounce up and down and I’ve tried scatter feeding and I’ve tried.
    Actually, putting my hand down to his face so that he doesn’t jump, but the minute he takes the food he jumps right back up and down again it’s just complicated and he’s not a very easy dog to train although he’s extremely smart he’s actually one of the smartest dogs I’ve ever owned

      Aw thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed this video. Maybe if you could show a video of how you walk with him, I could give you some pointers. It might help me to see how both of you work together so I can see what your timing is like, and how excited your dog gets. I'll be looking at your video about dropping the ball, in my next video, so hopefully I can help with that as well 😊

      Ok, no worries, if you happen to film it, great, but don't worry if you can't. Sometimes I'll set my phone or camera on a table or the ground nearby so I can film myself while working with the dog. That way I can watch my body language as well.

    I just adopted a 10 month old Shiba from a shelter. He is well socialized with people but hates going for walks but what is even worse is he hates wearing a collar the most and won't go near harnesses. Every time he has one on he runs around shaking his head want to take it off and even tries to play bite if you grab him while wearing it. I don't want it escalate to actual biting one day. Do you have any videos or tips to teach a Shiba to take to a collar so that he will be able to be comfortable on walks? He has a lot of energy and I can't burn it off him because this issue. Any help will be appreciated!!

      Ha! I'm all too familiar with that trick Shiba's try to pull! Sometime I will try pointing at stuff on the ground or act interesting in something to get their attention and keep them moving. Of I'll toss a small treat ahead of them just to get the ball going. When all else fails, I pick up my Shiba and carry them for a few steps and that usually helps lol!

      @K9Tay  Před 5 lety +3

      Unfortunately they are legal and VERY popular among a lot of dog trainers. I don't necessarily think the people who use them are terrible people, just misguided owners who haven't been taught to use more appropriate tools or take enough time to work with their dog properly. I sure am glad they outlawed these archaic devices in your country! Keep up the good work Finland! :D
