  • Legendary rapper and producer MF DOOM is covered in this documentary. Your favorite rapper's favorite rapper. DOOM is a British-American rapper. He performed and released music under several stage names, most notably MF Doom (stylized in all caps). DOOM debuted during hip hop's golden age of the late 1980s and became a major figure in underground hip hop of the early 21st century. Upon his death, Variety called him "one of the most celebrated, unpredictable and enigmatic figures in independent hip-hop". People have called him The Phantom of the Opera of Hip Hop.
Born in London, Dumile moved with his family to Long Island, New York, at a young age. He began his musical career in 1988 as a member of the trio KMD, performing under the name Zev Love X with his younger brother DJ Subroc and another MC called Rodan. After hearing about the group from 3rd Bass, A&R Dante Ross signed KMD to Elektra Records and their recording debut arrived on 3rd Bass’s song “The Gas Face” from The Cactus Album. Their debut album Mr. Hood was released in 1991 and attained modest success with the singles “Peachfuzz” and “Who Me?” KMD disbanded in 1993.
After taking a hiatus from music, Dumile reemerged in 1998, when he began performing at open mic events while wearing a mask. He adopted the MF Doom persona and rarely made unmasked public appearances thereafter. His metal mask resembles that of Marvel Comics super-villain Doctor Doom, who is depicted rapping on the cover of his 1999 debut solo album Operation: Doomsday. DOOM’s most prolific period was in the early 2000s, when he released four studio albums and two collaborative albums between 2003 and 2005, using the MF Doom moniker as well as the pseudonyms King Geedorah and Viktor Vaughn. In the 2010s, he relocated to London, where he recorded more music.
MF DOOM frequently collaborated with other producers and rappers, most notably Madlib, under the moniker Madvillain. The duo's 2004 album Madvillainy received widespread critical acclaim upon its release and has been cited as DOOM’s magnum opus and a landmark album in hip hop. DOOM’s other notable collaborations include Danger Doom (with Danger Mouse), Doomstarks (with Ghostface Killah), JJ Doom (with Jneiro Jarel), NehruvianDoom (with Bishop Nehru), and Czarface Meets Metal Face (with Czarface).
In 2003, MF DOOM released the King Geedorah album Take Me to Your Leader. Geedorah is credited as producer, but only appears as an MC on four tracks. The majority of vocal tracks feature guest MCs, and the album features several instrumental montages of sampled vocals from old movies and TV shows-a technique employed on most of Doom’s albums. Later in 2003, DOOM released the LP Vaudeville Villain under the moniker Viktor Vaughn (another play on Doctor Doom, whose "real name" is Victor von Doom). In 2004 he released a follow-up LP under the Viktor Vaughn moniker, Venomous Villain. Later in 2004, the second MF Doom album Mm..Food was released by Minnesota-based label Rhymesayers Entertainment.
DOOM’s first commercial breakthrough came in 2004, with the album Madvillainy, created with producer Madlib under the group name Madvillain. Released by Stones Throw Records, the album was a critical and commercial success. It has since become known as a MF DOOM masterpiece.

And it's also - I like to give the listener a feeling of 'I could be them, I could be any one of them' you know what I'm saying? Like, DOOM is the average Joe. As a kid growing up in a small ass ex Soviet Union country where punk is still the most popular music genre, i hated hip hop.
It was the i guess "bling" era hip hop, 50 cent, lil wayne when they first started mixing hip hop and pop music. And it didn't help that a lot of our own hip hop was more tongue in cheek type funny rap.
By chance, when I first started making my own music for fun, i found one of does highlighted rhymes video on MF DOOM "meat grinder" and it absolutely blew my mind and "tick tock" ft. MF GRIMM broke it.
I'm still quite picky about what type of hip hop i like ((mainly Denzel Curry and Token)) DOOM made me love this genre of music and showed me how nearly limitless one can be with writing.

From what I read he would go bombing on off nights from recording and touring. Not just that, many of his references and slang were drenched in late 80s early 90s NYC I always wondered how people got his shit other than those of us who lived in the area from that era. DOOM held that torch and flipped it for the world. Now he is gone and everything is wack.

I feel so weird knowing that DOOM might blow up now unlike ever before. Real hip hop heads know the villain but in many ways he was our best kept secret. He's just too much for most, between the ridiculous rhyme schemes, the hard to follow stories he creates in your head with his lyricism and his unique often off beat flow that just slaps different. DOOM was unlike any other and for so long it's been my way of identifying the real lovers of the genre. if you fuck with the super villain that you fuck with that real hip hop. He never wanted the fame, the recognition wasn't the motivation. It was about the art, it was about the beats and the rhymes. That shit has mostly been forgotten, so if losing DOOM is the only way to get a bit of that back, then what a sacrifice! It's time the world appreciates the greatness that's been left behind by Daniel Dumile, the greatest to ever do it

Fun fact: His dad was Zimbabwean, hence the name Dumile (prob Doo-mee-leh) and in Ndebele (his father's language) it means Famous. The irony is painful in that he spent the majority of his life resisting fame behind that mask.
    Dumile. Famous.
To us he was more than that though. He was legend.

Hip hop is all American, and hip hop is universal. That's my main takeaways from this. Even old news reporters can quote some DOOM

His father is Zimbabwean and mother Trinidadian. Let's see how many Americans are pissed off by this fact.

32:15 what's crazy is when Steez passed I played Steez's version of that song and the intro made me shed a tear. a few years later I shed a tear to the same intro after DOOM died.
Never cried listening to a songs on any other occasion.
I will rock this microphoneeeee alwaysssss, still chokes me up, cool to see him perform this bit live.

Nothing brings a tear to my eye more than the fact that this Underground King is finally getting the mainstream love and admiration he deserved this entire time. I'm sad that it took so long, but I'm happy it happened. RIP METAL FACE, gone before your time.

what a great documentary. really paints doom in a positive light. I love how he was purely about the music. Truely a master of his craft. The one and only MF DOOM. Also had no idea madlib was from the westcoast. Mixing the westcoast and eastcoast sound is a match made in heaven
