I FINALLY DID IT!!!! Catching John Dory - Autumn 2020 - Sea Fishing UK.

- Anyone who follows our channel will likely know how long I have been wanting to catch a John Dory. The Autumn weather made the day cold and wet but between the numerous dolphins and the fantastic fishing I had a brilliant day!!! Boat fishing in the UK can still be very productive in Autumn and there is still a lot to get excited about!!
Here are links to some of the tackle I used in this video.

- Here is the follow on video. John Dory Catch and Cook. Delicious. 😊👌🏻🐟🍽 czcams.com/video/5tz2lZKdRTM/video.html
The Fish Locker - I loved the start, but the end was a load of pollocks!!
Watched the The Spargo Kichen guru last night... looked delicious! Great team..🙂
Yummmm! What a great chef Jim is!!!
I was just going to ask if they are edible. TY
I've missed you guys. I've been out of it a little. I have a daughter that is a missing person. My daughter. She met someone from Jordan. On line. Says he lives in Egypt. I don't know. Anyway we are all a little better now. If it's ever good news. I'll let u know. As always great to see you and enjoy your videos.
This guy catches two massive tuna by himself out of this same boat, and he's twice as excited for a fish named John. amazing catch! i had no idea fish that wacky looking existed in that area. the ocean is such a magical place.
- Haha. Every fish is special mate. Especially when they look as interesting as these bad boys. Haha. Take care mate 😊
The look on your face when you bought the first John dory was a total pleasure to see .....its the total joy is wot its about ....well done
- No hiding that type of joy is there. haha. Calm composure out the window with that one!! Haha 😊
The feeling when u catch a fish is awesome....especially in the sea...nice work!
Big respect for putting the small one back the way you did
- If the bigger one had looked like he would have survived I would have done the same with him. But he was clearly blown.
Thumbs up for John- Dory
- Three thumbs up!!! 😊

Currently still watching this but all I can say is congratulations after years of watching you on your channel since around 5-6 k subscribers this is amazing to see you finally catch your target fish well done John after helping so many people catch one well done John ! Glad you had it on video well deserved!
- Thank you Tom. As you say this is one species I have wanted to catch for a long time. We blanked on them last trip when we saw the whales and I knew that I might not get another chance this year so I really was so happy to get amongst them. 😊
Well they say you can learn something everyday no matter how old you get, well John i can say i have never seen any fisher person do what you did to try and return the fish and it worked Well done you are truly a caring person Manchester UK.
- I knew it wasn't injured or blown and it just couldn't get itself back down. So I helped it on its way. After this video I am going to make a proper decender and do a video on it. It isn't possible with all fish but some just need a little extra help. 😊
My biggest take away from this video and is his message of sustainability. While many fishermen would simply keep the fish because they have a right to, here we see his ingenuity put to use to keep just one more fish in the sea.
I thought the weekends footy was unbelievable, but JSL catching a John Dory is against all the odds! 🙂
Stay safe Lockers.👍
- Just needed to put my mind to it mate. I’ve wanted to catch one for a long time. But this was a specific effort. 😉👍🏻🎣🐟

I know I'm a new subscriber but this is becoming my favourite fishing channel. I love the Blue Shark episodes. Be nice to see you hook a monster and say those magical words.
I need a bigger boat. Stay safe cracking Dory. Regards Tony
Congrats mate
Congratulations john well done man I'm happy you finally got it and three of them in one session too! HA!
Tony Ashton - Thank you Tony. I had hoped to get back out to look for that Thresher but sadly the weather really picked up. Who knows? 🤞🏻🦈
Its like Christmas again that re lived feeling of your first catch... Well done mate very happy for you
- It really was a special moment. So glad I get to share it with you all. 😊
Hey man, I love your videos a lot. I’m not a fish person or someone who goes fishing, but your videos are so interesting and they teach me stuff I did not expect at all. Your videos are one of my coping mechanisms for when I have a lot of anxiety, I find them calming and you are very gentle and caring about wildlife and also love your accent.
- Hello Heidi. You may take comfort in the knowledge that I have been contacted by numerous people saying the exact same thing. It is one of the reasons why we have tried to up our video output during these difficult times. If our videos can help to bring even a short positive distraction and bring you some calm, then they are worth it.😊
Congratulations sir! True gentleman to show that much respect for that fine fish to not only release but to make sure he was able to get back down to the bottom to ensure its survival.
- Just because we take fish for the table it doesn't not mean we shouldn't show them compassion. 😊
Awwwwww. Look at his ickle face when he caught the first John Dory. Soooo cute.
- ☺️
@@TheFishLocker I bet that was exactly the same face the first time you went potty all by yourself and shouted "Mummy, look, I went poo poo by myself." lol.
One of the finest eating fish in the sea. Nice size
- They really are incredible eating fish aren't they. 😊
You have got so many comments! And here is a big congratulations from me as well. What a fantastic fish. "Sanktpetersfisk" we call them in Denmark. All the best to you and your family.
- Haha. Yes I am doing my best to keep up with them all but they're coming in thick and fast. Thank you very much and have a wonderful day. 😊 'Ansum - as they say in Cornwall.
Amazing to get in a sitting, the wife understands now why I want a boat, but I’ve got to get her to agree. Keep it up.
- Just show her some of our family boat trips with my good wife and James? 😊
I saw my one and only John Dory in a Scottish harbour e.coast Cove. Skipper Jock took me&Dad out for cod. He used a cut down snooker cue and charged 2packs of Lambert&Butler for one of the best days of my life 😊 ❤
Haha. Good old times.
Well done for catching the John Dory at last! so wonderful that you took so much time and effort to return the little one to the depths. Looking forward to seeing the John Dorey's in Spargo's Kitchen in the link below again.
Have you watched the cooking video yet?
One of a very few channels that I don't skip the ads. Always a well produced, informative, and satisfyingingly awesome production. YOU ROCK!!! Thank you, so much. yeah
- Thank you very much Kirk. I really do appreciate it. 😊
What an achievement 3 John Dory in one day. For donkeys years ive always wanted to catch one. I've only ever seen them in books. Outstanding, well done John.
This was a very special session. A proper dedicated effort for them and really glad it paid off. 💙🐟🐟🐟
Well done getting the little John Dory back .I remember seeing a John Dory while diving off the wreck of the James Egan Lane off Plymouth. Great fish to come across.
Stunning looking fish aren they. 😊
You do realise that John Dory's are the best eating fish. Absolutely beautiful to eat.
- I do Derek. We have a catch and cook video in editing as we speak.😊
Fantastic!!! Congrats on catching the elusive John Dory!!! Great job! Your face lit up like a child at Christmas!!!
- Teresa I have been chasing this fish for a long time. So to catch one finally was a big thing for me. Made only better by the fact I can share the whole experience with you all. So so happy. 😊
Just brilliant, I loved fishing tiny baits at silly depths with light tackle in Scottish lochs....Congrats on a great day!!!
- You never know what you’re going to catch to do. 😊👍🏻🐟🎣
Just watched this for probably the 7th time and celebrate with you “Yes, John Dory in the net “
Haha. That was a fish I had been hunting for a long time!!!
That was so enjoyable, especially with the glee of your success with the John Dory, (learn about a new species today). Since you worry about jinxing yourself you should always target the elusive dogfish.🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣👍❤️it.
- I am glad you enjoyed joining me on this special session James. Haha. I am not usually too bad with superstitions but with something that had eluded me for as ling as these guys I was taking no chances!! 😊
@@TheFishLocker Hello again John. About "superstitions": I come from a family
of military sailors & I know you crewed on an aircraft carrier in Her Majestys' Navy.
I've been around boats & fished most of my life. I've crewed on none military vessels.
I say this as somewhat of a joke...BUT...I've always thought sailors & fishermen are
required to be superstitious :-))
LOL, Ben
What a fishing trip. I would be re-living that trip over and over in my head if I had done it.
God Bless x
- It definitely was a special one not to be forgotten. 😊👍🏻🎣
That grunt was so cute I couldn't take that fish seriously! How adorable!
- They are stunning aren’t they.
Loved how you managed to get the smaller JD back deep. Hopefully, it had the strength to recover. It did look to have a fair bit in it still with your attempt to return it at the surface.
I hope so too.
Fantastic watch as normal. The best fishing channel on CZcams without a doubt 👌👍🏻
- Thank you Paul. 😊
New drone really adds a nice touch . Congrats on the JD. 🇨🇭🤘
- Thank you Gordon. Im still learning how to use it properly mate but its been good fun. 😊
Hi Gordon.
Congratulations on catching the John Dory. Excellent show today
- Thank you Roy. 😊
Congratulations 👏!!! U really have been after that one for a minute. I've never seen one before, but I can see why u would want to catch them. Way to go!
- They are incredible looking aren't they Kaisha. So so happy to have finally slipped the net under a few. 😊
Congratulations on realizing that goal of yours! I'm just glad to keep getting such quality calming content in these strange times. It helps.
- Jack, we are all in this together my friend. Everything going on is an external, how you allow it to effect you is down to you mate. Keep your chin up and give me a message if you're at a loose end. 😊
@@TheFishLocker It means a lot for you to say that. I've been taking a page from your playbook lately and working to identify all the flowers and weeds and trees and mushrooms I pass on my evening walks :P
KAKADOUJACK - That is brilliant.😊👍🏻
Congratulations John. The last time i saw you so intens happy was when you caught your amazing tunas. Dam nice when it finally works out. I am happy for you. Well done.
- Thank you Wim. I was absolutely over the moon to catch them but also so happy to be able to share the whole experience with you all. 😊
I live in the US, I don't even fish, but I love your videos simply for the joy on your face when you see something cool like those dolphins! ...okay, i love them for your sweet little Fish Locker family! Congrats on the catch boo and thanks for sharing your passion with the world.
- Thank you so much and welcome. It is our pleasure to share our videos with you. 😊
Congratulations John, you must be on cloud nine. Well done and best wishes to you and your family. 👏🐟☘️
- Haha. Just glad to finally put one in the net. I was beginning to doubt myself. Haha. 😊
Brilliant! I’ve never seen any fish like the Dory, but I can tell you definetely deserved the catch! Thanks for the amazing video once again!
- They are incredible looking fish aren't they. You can see now why they are so sought after can't you. Catch and cook in editing. 😊
Get in John! I'm well happy for you mate that is such a bizarre but incredible looking fish. All the best
- Incredible aren't they Jack. Such a unique fish 😊
John is the best fisherman on the planet 😊
- Maybe the luckiest. 😊
The Fish Locker ha ha ye a bit of that to 😊 today for me it’s been quite sad my granny’s dog passed at the age of 13 he was with me my whole life 😭
Love the overhead shot as you were heading out. Absolutely beautiful, with the sun just coming up and not another boat in sight. It's like you had the whole ocean to yourself. The music you put with it was a good choice too. It was just 30 seconds of the video, but it was well worth the effort.
- Thank you. I am still learning how to fly the drone properly and experimenting with music in the vids. Hopefully things will continue to improve. 😊
Thanks John for another fantastic fishing adventure, congrats on catching the John Dory after many years of trying, keep up the good work.
- Thank you very much Frederick. It has been a long time coming. 😊
Gledao sam dosta Vaših videa i oduševljen sam nažalost nemam puno prilika da pecam ili ronim na moru ali uživam u svemu što gledam pogotovu poštujem što Vam je porodica toliko skladna puno sreće i živeli.
- Thank you. 😊
Always a good watch. Always good ideas and new information learned in all of your videos. 🙂
- I have always said that if the videos help anyone out then they have been worth making. 😊
I remember you telling me you wasn't bothered about catching a Dory!! I remember your dear wife ribbing you about not getting one too! Well that celebration told me different Mr Locker 😂😂😂😂🎊🎉🎉 Well done mate
- Haha. Calm demeanour out the window on that one. Ok ok. Maybe I did care a little bit!! 😊
@@TheFishLocker 😂😂😂😂 really happy for you though how did they taste or do i have to wait for another video to see
gavin mcnamara - Catch and cook video due up in the next day or 2. 😉
Many many years ago went out on a boat off Woolongong Sydney and a guy caught one. My first ever sight of a John Dory. Always remembered it from it's unusual shape and name. Said to be great eating as you point out. Enjoy!!
- They are incredible looking creatures aren't they and yes. Absolutely delicious!! Catch and cook video in editing. 😊
@@TheFishLocker Bring it on.🤩
OMG,that's brilliant, well done. Can't beat that feeling when a plan comes together ! Look forward to seeing the cook part.
- Thanks Kevin. Catch and cook video due up in a day or two. 😊👍🏻
@@TheFishLocker Great,look forward to that !
Congratulations! It feels good to accomplish fishing goals. Tight lines brother.
- Thank you Sean, it really does feel wonderful doesn't it. 😊
Well done mate!! Absolutely stunning looking fish that!! 😃👏
- Thank you. They are wonderful looking aren't they. 😊
In the battle of the Johns there was only ever going to be one winner !! 🐠🐠🐠
Many congrats On achieving your target species. Also intrigued with your returning technique. 👍🏻
Loved the video. Always a massive highlight in our household when there’s a new FL video to watch! 👱🏼♂️🧒🏼
- Haha. THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE!!!!! I will do a little video on returning fish and making a "decender". Some fish just need a little extra help to get back down to depth.
I love that you labored to bring the little one back home.
- I was just doing the right thing. Just because I take fish for the table doesn't mean I shouldn't treat them with compassion. 😊
@@TheFishLocker honorable person :)
You finally did do it and in style. Well done John the smile said it all.
- Haha. It took me long enough though didn't it. 😊
We have lived through your journey in the hunt for a John Dory catch, great to see if first hand John, but sidenote what an opening shot of the drone flying and you driving the boat at the same time, top marks on that pal.
- Thank you Thomas. It wasn't easy to do solo - I'm still learning how to pilot it properly. But I enjoy the challenge. 😊
I'm sure the drone will have a feature on it John so it will follow you along and circle around you without touching the controls!? Either way was an epic opening shot fella, and some John Dorys, what more can I say just awesome after watching you for so long, keep at it fella nice one👍🏻🔥🔥🇬🇧🙏🏻🙏🏻
Ian Towers - You can program things but add those to a moving boat at sea and it’s a whole new ball game. 😉
Beauty, well in mate...... if anyone deserves to catch one you defo do for all the help you’ve given us!!! 🎣🎣
Also I forgot to ask does this session top the tuna for you? Unforgettable sessions!
- Thanks mate. Aye, Ive been chasing these bad boys for some time. So sliding the net under a few really is brilliant. Compared to the Tuna. Both really special in their own right. 😊
The Fish Locker I know you’ve been chasing them I’ve watched every video 😉 well deserved, I can only dream of catching one and a tuna
Yaaaay! Congratulations. John!!! Well done! Your videos always make me smile!
- Thank you Candice. I am glad to hear you say that. 😊
Thanks John your a top bloke you have re inspired me to get out there and rediscover my love for fishing great show every time keep em coming please 🎣👍
I am really glad to hear that Ralph, sorry for the late reply this comment managed to slip through the net somehow. 😊
Absolutely amazing video shipmate. Didn't realise that you have the shore caught Bass record. Just had a Sea Angler video flash up. Glad to see them John Dory well done mate 👏
- Haha. Yeah mate. That was another really lucky session back when I was a young man. Thank you. 😊
Brilliant John, well done, what an amazing looking fish, had no idea what a john dory looked like until I watched this video, shame they didn't all go back, but a catch and cook would be good.👍👍🎣
- I would have liked to return 2 and keep 1 but they were gladly taken to the kitchen. 😊 Have you seen the video?
Just Awsome Angling skills bud, you deserved that fish. Cracking specimen. I'm just loving the variety of the channel. Thanks for posting stay safe. Regards Tony
- Thank you Tony. I do hope that the variety and depth of knowledge of the range of content sets us aside from the other channels that try to do what we do. 😊🐟👍🏻
@@TheFishLocker Your in a different league bud on every level. Variety, skill sets, rigs, fish care and environmentaly aware, entertaining and educational..... Its a big list bud. My favourites are Blue Sharks, Cuckoo Wrasse and Red Gurnard. Stay safe cheers. Tony
Nothing like being along for the ride when someone gets a fish they have been after for a long time. Thanks for sharing 👍 😊.
- Jim I am so so glad that I get to share this moment with everyone. Absolutely amazing 😊
Well done John mate 👍 get in. They will be like buses now. 😂
- Haha. I’ll be happy with that. 👍🏻
Is there anything that this man can’t do tuna massive record bass of the shore now his first JD the only thing I don’t understand is how fishlocker hasn’t got a million plus subs come on guys smash that sub and like button
- Haha. Thank you very much, I guess Im just a lucky guy. Take care and best wishes to you and your family. 😊
That's a fine specimen ..very fine.. every time I watch you, old or new, (and I'm 62).. experienced fisherman Rhode Island raised, my face was in the the ocean winds when I was born, and I still learn ...
Every day is a school day. 😊👍🏻
@@TheFishLocker Can't argue with truth friend
Brilliant, that's the first John Dory I've ever seen caught on rod and line.
Haha. This was a special trip for me.
Nice catch :) they look like some delicious fish!
- They really are!!
Massive congratulations. Hell of a days fishing . Although the wife has just pointed out dory’s are blue and yellow 🤦🏻♂️🤣
- Tell her those are Ellen Dories. These are John Dory's mate. 😊
WOOHOO! You did it! I'll bet they were amazing to eat as well! Looking forward to the "cook" part of the video! Congrats!!
- You will be pleased to know it is editing as we speak. 😊
John you are a true Sportsman , pitting yourself against an unseen quarry , your knowledge against them . However when you do succeed you are so caring to restore your catch to its home . Keep up the good work and still hoping to see James catch his baby plesiosaurus .
- Thank you Geoffrey. I have this argument/discussion with people often actually when they question me for returning so many "eating fish". I hold two stances depending on the argument. 1st ( and this is usually in reference to the Tuna I returned ) - Is it not enough that you have won. That you have pitted yourself against a worthy opponent and in a battle of wits and strength and determination that you have won. Is that not enough? That you have to then kill it? It is not even a case of mercy, it is respect. And I think it says something about you as a man and your place in the world ..... and 2nd - and more recently - We as anglers are the guardians of the sea. We are the ones most invested and involved, we as anglers and aware humans have a base responsibility for the ecosystems and their inhabitants. This is my passion Geoffrey. The sea, and everything that lives in it. 😊
Well done John a real ‘Red Letter Day’ for you. Many great tips but for me the standout one is be there at first light. Your coming in when so called ‘experts’ are going out haha!
- Exactly that Paul. Well observed. The early bird might catch the worm - but the early angler gets the fish. 😊
Had to watch this one again, great seeing an elusive fish finally landed......congratulations although you would have probably landed another by now.
Cheers Alan. This was a special one for me. 😊
Legit the bob ross of fishing
(saw this in a comment from a year ago but 100% agree)
- Haha. I shall take that as a compliment Christopher and welcome to our channel. 😊
@@TheFishLocker Wow this video is one month old and your still giving out hearts and commenting, your an amazing fisherman and my first comment was said with good intentions (Hope you have a fantastic day and keep making your amazing content)

- 3 by the end of the session!!
As a professional cameraman, that drone footage is top tier. Thanks for upskilling on that mate, makes the videos so much more enjoyable for me (:
- Thank you Jack. I am very much still learning with the drone. Hopefully things will continue to improve. 😊
Got told they are good eating John Dory’s keep meaning to try one I do
- They are incredible eating fish. Video in editing. 😊
Best fish I've had, very delicate but just lovely 😋
Bob Charlie - Incredibly good eating.
Fantastic show, you were right. Truly awesome fish. Looking forward to your catch and cook…🥳
They are a stunning fish aren't they. And they taste truly sublime!!! 😊
Well done John. Those john dory are pretty amazing.
- Thanks James. They are pretty special aren't they!!
Never seen anyone so happy to catch such a plug ugly thing!
- WHAT?!? That is one of the most unique looking fish you can catch. Haha. And for a "unique' looking gent like myself I am more than happy to catch one.haha. Best wishes mate. 😊
"JOHN DORY IN THE NET!!!"
- YESS!!!!!! HAHA
Print that on the next batch of T shirts 😆
William Collett - I will see if I can get that organised.
Well done John, always a treat, keep on doing what you are doing. I used to to Whitby and fish with Tutt Uttley a fantastic skipper but a strict disciplinarian, it's a long time ago but I always enjoyed the trips, good times. Although I am in my 70's I need to start going again, My tackle is ready after the lock down.
You and yours Keep Safe.
- I wish you the best of luck Douglas. Tight lines my friend. 😊
Congratulations on catching your nemesis mate. Nice to see the amount of time you spent ensuring the small one was returned home 👍
- Thank you Sean. It is one of the things I feel very passionately about. We as anglers are the guardians of the sea. It is our responsibility to care for the ecosystems and the creatures that live within them. Sustainable fishing is the only way forward, take only what you need. Best wishes mate and stay safe. 😊
Have you ever read fly fishing by j r Hartley ? Good read
- No I haven't. Would you recommend it to people?
No. But I'd recommend "Sea fishing" by fish locker.
When COVID is over I would love if you would organise for some of us to come down to visit one charter some boats and come out with you
- We have done a few Fishlocker charters in the past but to be honest people mess me around. Don't pay and then don't show and the last 2 I actually lost money. So we will do more but only full boat charters. You book and pay for the boat and fill it yourself. Then me and the skipper just organise the fishing. 😊
Sorry to hear that people let you down if in the future you do it again I would like to be there and I would pay you up front thanks for your time
Frank Gallagher - Send me a PM on the Fishlocker fb page mate. 👍🏻
Well done John - well deserved after your near misses!
- I'm just so happy to be able to share this fantastic session with you all. Its better when you can share the joy isn't it. 😊
Congratulations John the look of joy on your face was self evident and respects for trying so hard to return that fish a lot of people I suspect wouldn't have bothered,I enjoyed this one very much as I'm very keen on john dory and my only suggestion is let me have one,😉 all the best stay well.👍
- Thank you Andreas. This was a special one for me. I can only suggest that if you truly want one - you catch one. As being given something isn't nearly as symbolic as finding one. Wishing you good health my friend 😊
Could not be happier for you John, what a wonderful way to break your duck with three smashing John Dory. The happiness you exuded was palpable and jumped out of the screen making it feel for the viewer a very special moment. Would love to have seen the Thresher and if you could of hooked it, you could of asked Hannah for a bigger boat. Hope all the family are well and looking forward to the next instalment x
- Nick I am so so happy that I got it on camera. It isn't the same unless you can share your joy is it. This really was a special one for me. 😊 I had hoped to go out looking for that Thresher but the weather the next day really picked up. Hopefully after the storms have passed we may cross paths again.😊
Well John, this is magic!! Really pleased for you too 🙂👍
- Thank you Mike. Such a brilliant thing to be able to share the moment with all of you. 😊
Fantastic hat trick John, so pleased for you. Wonderful looking fish. Great video as always.
Have to mention the aerial footage as you streamed out, it’s so dynamic. Cheers to you all
- Thank you Stephen. I'm glad you enjoyed the drone footage. I'm still practicing how to use it. 😊
As a youngster I was fishing the channel on Ted Coker's boat from Folkstone with my dad and caught a whopper on a pirk intended for cod. Best tasting fish I have ever had. Great channel, loving the content. Thank you!
- They are delicious aren't they!!!
Love the care you put into returning that Dory John (or John Dory even). I’ve often thought you have the look of an RM. I was at CTC Lympstone in ‘78. Per mare per terram👍
- Thank you. Just because we take fish for the table does not mean we should not treat them with compassion. 😊
Really pleased for you John, after so many years of hunting. Not only do you find your nemesis, but you get 3 of them. Amazing, great to see a new method of fish release. Keep up the good work, and tight lines.
- Thank you Ray. It does feel really good to get the net under a few. I will look at making a video on fish release like that, if you think it will help folks? 😊
