Yes, Chris almost always used a pick. He is the foundation of Yes's sound. And his vocal harmonies heavenly. RIP Chris (and Alan).
if you are looking for great YES live songs please try "And You And I" or "Starship Troopers". both symphony.
One thing that you experienced live is when he hits those low notes, you feel them as much as you hear them.

There are sections of other Yes songs in this solo. The album version of The Fish is quite different. Awesome live performance, really enjoyed watching this with you
Chris Squire plays his Bass with a pic.........The Fish is on the "Fragile" album.....you can react to it...if you want to.....I have seen Yes 5 times in concert and the members do solos like this on their songs...often in concert. Amazing to watch. Good reaction.
Now, after almost fifty years, do I perceive that when Steve Howe plays those harmonics, the rhythm is 7/8 or 7/4. The bass riff in the middle makes me think of another Yes song, Tempus Fugit, of the album Drama (1980).
On Fragile, each member was given one track to do on their own. Chris did The Fish (Schindleria Praematurus), wherein it is a layer cake of bass parts all played by him while doing the vocal as well. So this version is quite different with the rest of the band playing along. Tempus Fugit, as mentioned below, is in here, and also Silent Wings of Freedom from Tormato. There is a lot of energy in the live version, but I prefer the way the album version builds on itself to the end. As for using a pick, yes he almost always does...but he said in an interview that he also strikes the string with the side of his thumb at the same time, so it gives it a different feel than just a pick alone. Another interesting thing he noted was that he used to put new strings on his basses every night before a performance.
He played with a pick that was a large coin shaved. This comes from Fragile . Early 70s. Each member of the band played one solo as the album was formatted.

Actually Chris often times used a coin instead of a pick. His talent went beyond human. He was something one and many can only aspire to
The song switch over to a song that was off their Tormato album I think, "Wing of Freedom" or something like that.
The Fish was Chris Squire's nickname in the band because he would spend hours in the bath...
The bass player was Chris Squire. Sadly Chris passed away about 4 yeaes ago. And yes he played with a pic. He held it close to his finger tip and double struck the strings with the pic and his finger at the same time. The drummer was Alan Wight, sadly Alan passed away last year.
