Ronnie Verrell was the drummer behind Animal (and was one of Buddy rich's all time favourite drummers) he started with the Ted heath orchestra, and as well as the muppets (Jack parnell 's band were the studios in house band) also performed with the likes of Nat King Cole, Tom Jones and Shirley bassey)
This really was two artists who respected each other demonstrating their craft.

And it's really lovely how Ronnie ''humbles'' himself when doing Animal's drumming to give that stomping caverman feel and simplicity most of the time (letting slip little snips of YOUCH! THAT'S WOW!) and enjoyed staying ''in character''.
What made these guys so special was their never losing their love of organic natural HUMAN rhythm, and staying away from technical dry academic boring stuff like many of the modern jjazz lot or progh/metal lot. Still playing for their teacher those guys! lol.
They mostly could all read to save timemin studios or when arranging for band leading, but beyond that, they kept it human and organic. Beatiful work!

The most expressive of them all I’d have to say IMO would have to be one of the full bodied muppet characters such as sweetums, or Thog, or doglion-those kind of characters. If you don’t know who or what I’m talking about, search up full bodied muppet characters. These guys can blink, move their pupils, obviously move their mouth, it’s amazing how much spirit and personality they give with the movement of some fingers. This is why I love the muppets!

Finally, we told Buddy that he was great at one time but now he is just another old drummer. In anger Buddy stripped off his suit and challenged us to play. 2 hours later he had played us into the Earth. We got a drum lesson for life! There are no words to describe a real legend!

@@micahphilson When the seminar was set up and we knew that he was coming we were all understandably excited. But when a Cadillac pulled into the music department and this real old man got out,we all scratched our heads and really wondered if this was not going to be a waste of time. We had just won the drum Corp competition in the South, competing against the drummers in the Allman Brothers band,so we were pretty full of ourselves. Well, after we get set up and we were auditioning for Rich, just every virtuoso he was hyper critical of our technique. He did not have a single good word to say. Now I have been yelled at by teachers and conducted and even slapped and punched. I had one from Germany who was always hitting me hard with his oversized baton. Finally the best drummer in the Corp smarted off and made the remark,"You were great in you time, but now you are an old man. Buddy was a real skinny man. Buddy did not say a word. He run to the caddy and pulled out his whole kit. While he set in up he was cursing us saying ," so you want me to play drums with you!" He sat down, counted on his sticks and played us into to the ground where we were so tired that we could not play any more. Buddy Rich was for real and the greatest drummer I ever played with. The other one was Ginger Baker.

Absolutely love this. Buddy rich is a ledgend. Most underrated drummer of all time. I will be daring and bold to suggest he is the greatest drummer of all time. No drummer in all history is so precise. Im suprised more people dont know about him. The more material you can find on the guy, the more youre left awestruck at his form, techniaue and precision. As you study up on him drummers, prepared to be blown away. John bonham even once said "buddy rich? Oh yeah christ im not as good as he is. Im just a rock dtummer.".
