  • 5 days and 93 km trekking from Cabanaconde in the Colca Canyon to Andagua in the Valley of the Volcanos via Cerani Pass. This trek was completed in early May.
    00:00 Intro
2:08 Day 1: 30 km with 1,200 meters of elevation gain
6:15 Choco Village: there was a small shop here with a few basic items
6:56 Camping in Mina Canyon: there was barely space for a small tent in this area. Probably would have been better to stay near Choco
7:45 Day 2: 12 km with 2,000 meters of gain. I had to cross the river about 10 times in the morning. I would have given myself an extra day if I had known this. I was concerned about finding after Mina village during the ascent, but some villagers said that there would be plenty of water, and I did find several places to refill
10:52 Camping in the small valley before Cerani Pass. Plenty of camping space and water.
    11:33 Day 3: 6 km with 700 meters gain
12:43 Cerani Pass: 5,120 meters altitude. There were some steep scree slopes on the descent, but otherwise it was not too difficult
14:08 Camping to the west of Cerani Pass. Again, plenty of space and water
    15:18 Day 4: 27 km with 200 meters gain
17:36 Chachas Village: some small shops here and a guesthouse/restaurant. There is also a colectivo from here to Andagua.
18:50 Day 5: 18 km with 800 meters gain. I was hoping to find a good trail between Chachas and Andagua, but the terrain was mostly volcanic rocks and I didn't have much choice but to stay on the dirt road.
    * the distances and especially the elevation gains are rough estimates as the map data is not very accurate in this region*

I know the feeling when you climb up to a high pass after an endless uphill trail. That's exciting mixed with relief and a bit of self-moved, sometimes more emotional. Only hikers can get this feeling. Keep hiking, David, really appreciate your hard trekking.

Yep, it's all downhill from here! Thank you Derrick!
The feeling was especially memorable because I was sick the day before, had no appetite, and had barely eaten anything in more than a day. Needless to say, I was exhausted at that point.
