  • Restoration Hardware DIY ANTIQUE MIRROR / How-to steps for under $50!
    Hello lovelies!
    Welcome back to the channel. This week I put together another DIY project inspired once again by Restoration Hardware. I really fell in love with a particular image in the catalog that featured an antique style mirror. I set myself up to run to my local Loews/Home Depot to purchase the supplies to make a similar video. The materials all were under $50 total. Guys, this project was easy and saved me thousands on what the real one would have cost! I hope you found a little inspiration in this video and set out to make your very own mirror. Remember, you can go as light or as heavy and use any color to make your own mirror.

    SUPPLIES NEEDED:
    4X4 PLYWOOD ( or any sturdy wood board)
    CitriStrip (1 entire bottle for this project)
    Rubber gloves
    Plastic and/or metal scrapers
    Caulk adhesive w/caulk gun or any industrial glue for mounting the tiles
    2 cans of whatever color spray paint you like (I used matte black)
    2 cans of whatever color paint for the wood board (you can roll paint too)
    1 5 foot metal wire for hanging
    2 eyelet screws to secure the wire
    2 metal crimps to fasten the wire and secure it
    Crimping tool to squeeze the crimps
    1/2 cup of bleach
    1/2 cup of water
    water bottle
    any sponges/napkins to create patterns (optional)
    I recommend spraying from very high if you want a more subtle look.
    Thank you for watching, please share this video if you enjoyed it and if necessary, pause the video to catch all the items I used (they are also listed above)

    Hey there I’ve done a lot of mirrors, a good tip for you. Instead of using a brush to put on the citrus stuff, use a contractor roller. You can keep going over it until the paint starts coming off to limit the amount of scraping. Got to use a lot of stripper!!!!! I’ve never had to scrape cause I was able to use a hose to spray it off. Hope this helps.

    I did the same thing several years ago using the beveled mirror tiles. Mine was 4x8 ft. My son-I-law did it in December in the garage and put wide crown molding around it. It was spectacular! We used mirror mastic to attach the tiles and butted them tightly together and hung it above the fireplace. It was everything I thought it would be, and better. The fireplace was on, the room spectacular, then- one by one the mirrors started to crack. They were butted too closely together in a very cold garage, and when they warmed they expanded. Ruined. Maybe I’ll do it again, sometime in the summer heat. Learn from a fail, friends!

    FYI you can achieve a much quicker mirror distressing by spraying oven cleaner on the backs of the mirrors, letting it sit for about 30 minutes and then just wiping it with a towel. I did this a few years back and it worked perfectly. Love the idea for the large mirror though looks fantastic!

    looks good, an easier way is to spray water on the front of the mirror and then lightly use a metallic spray point over certain spots you want to have the distressed look, then blot a little with a paper towel and let it dry

    You know you could have saved yourself a lot of hard work by purchasing a mirror antiquing kit. I got mine from Amy Howard Home and took her class on antiquing mirrors. The kit has two cans of product. The first can quickly removes the paint - usually black - on the back side of the mirror so you can put your etched design on the mirrored silver glass. Very fast, very easy. There are other mirror antiquing kits on the market besides Amy Howard's. Once you have the glass the way you want it, there is a black paint that you roll on to finish it. You can also stencil a design on the glass. My favorite is a Greek Key design.

    • @LizBesanson
      @LizBesanson  Před 3 lety

      yes I used one of those kits a long time ago but not everyone worldwide has access to these products so I made it easier for all to just use a mirror and remove the backing with any kind of stripper. Thanks for watching the video!☺️

      Thank you friend, the internet is a place where people feel empowered to be negative, it does something within them. It’s actually what they do all day, everyday..we call them “trolls” they seek to attempt to bring a bad word in or a thumbs down when it actually all their engagement is doing is not hurting me but putting more dollars in my pocket. So in essence, we welcome the bad with the good. The more they hate the more money goes into my account 😂 they just aren’t smart enough to know that since most of them are underage or down right bored at home with no life individuals. I appreciate your sweet concern but this is normal. 🤍

Amazing diy😊 this is totally unrelated question, but I found similar chandelier like yours online and since I am doing a total transformation on my home, I want to purchase it but my question is does it give enough light? What are your thoughts on the chandelier. I would love one but I do want it to give enough light. Thank you love! Amazing video I enjoyed it so so much! ❤️

    • @LizBesanson
      @LizBesanson  Před 3 lety

      it all depends on the bulbs you put into it..chandeliers don't come with lightbulbs. You control the ambience of the light. I have low watt bulbs in mind I think 40 watts so its very ambient in the room but it you need brighter, then go up in watts. ☺️

    Caulking glue will "stain" in due time. Use mirror mastic

    I see you are using plain mirror tiles. What is it that you are stripping off of the tiles...the actual mirror coating? Help

      The backs of the mirror have a paint coating. Thats the part you want to remove. You will have some kind of film like substance but the bleach/water effect will still work through that. You just have to get the back color off..in my case it was the grey paint on the backs. After the bleach I then cleaned them up and took them out to spray them in black to seal but you can use a pretty gold or silver metallic for a nice look too. ☺️
