- The post-Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving era has not been kind to the Nets. For what it's worth, I think they made out really nicely in their respective trades. They now have a surplus of draft equity that could be enough to acquire an All-Star. But will one become available to them? And what kind would they need to really elevate this roster to title contention? I'm skeptical they'll be able to transform this roster to where they want it to be anytime soon. They might be better off negotiating a trade with the Rockets that allows them to get control of their draft picks back so they can take a step back and enter a rebuild. They might be able to get back to relevance faster that way with some young players they can build a future with.

Jalen green to nets would be fire 🔥
I think he makes a lot more sense there than Mikal Bridges if they can't get an All-Star. Green + a couple lottery picks is a nice start in a different direction.

Awesome explanation. It makes a lot of sense now where Brooklyn office is at. Sucks we not rebuilding, but pivoting for a all star in 2025.. i want my GM fired. Lol
I'm sure a lot of their confidence in their plan stems from recovering nicely from the Celtics trade. But 2015-2018 was a brutal time giving up so many valuable picks. And the NBA has changed a lot in terms of player movement. It all happens through trades now. Teams are too risk averse to let their stars hit free agency and walk for nothing.
The full trade was midkal+suns picks for our own back. Its why we didnt do it

what do you think about a reverse order of operations on the pipedream scenario where they add a lead guard this summer but retain at least 4 of their 7 FRPs for a bigger add going forward?
It seems unlikely Giannis asks out now, but if MIL struggles again next summer seems possible, and if Nets have positioned themselves as playoff team after adding someone like Mitchell with Bridges, they'd seem to be a relatively appealing situation. even more hilarious in this scenario, if PHO is struggling again, do they find themselves in the position the Nets were in at this deadline where they need to consider trading KD back to Brooklyn to get whatever of their picks remain back?
This seems like a more realistic pipedream route though not sure there's a good backup plan if Mitchell extends but maybe (Trae, Garland, D. White)?
Reverse order is fine because ultimately they won’t sign anyone in free agency. The point of cap space nowadays is to leverage a trade since you’re a threat to sign that player outright. They’ll take whichever star they could get right now and hope it’s enough to get another player to force his way there.

I think the Brooklyn trade exceptions could be used in 3 teamers for taking in expiring salary.
Sacramento immediately jumps to mind especially with Jordi taking over as coach. Davion Mitchell and Chris Duarte are two names in particular that he’ll have a good feel on. Keep their RFA rights for next offseason if they pan out.
A tonne of 2nd apron teams could use the Brooklyn TPEs too.
Sac - Kuzma + Pick 26
Was - Huerter + Pick 13
Bkn - Vezenkov + Mitchell
I think those expirings for Kuzma in the Sacramento video , also make a bunch of sense for Cam Johnson too depending on how much cap space Brooklyn are looking to create in 25.
Yup those can be used too, but I think Brooklyn is probably going to try avoid using their TPEs for something like that.
@@YossiGozlanNBA duarte not so much but I could see Mitchell for sure if Jordi is high on him. I could see Mitchell as a flyer who was a poor fit in Sac and a defensive culture setter for a new coach

The weirdest thing about Sean Marks and the Nets is that they're doing everything the exact opposite as they did when they rebuilt the team after the KG/Pierce trade. Just trying to be mediocre now and not making yourself better long term.
IMO, i think Joe Tsai is giving Marks some sort of anti-rebuild mandate, and that's why they're pushing forward with this "star hunting" plan. I don't know anyone who isn't a Nets fan who thinks this strategy is viable.
The main difference is that now they have all these extra picks from trading KD, more than offsetting the loss of their own to Houston. So yes they have the tools to build a super team, but those players actually need to become available and be interested in joining Brooklyn. No guarantee of either of those things happening.
@YossiGozlanNBA having the picks is only half the battle though. They have to 1) outbid other teams for those players and/or 2) have stars actually want to come to their team.
I think your Giannis example is a good one because my sense is that's their plan B if Mitchell extends in Cleveland. But if he leaves Milwuakee, why would he go to Brooklyn? This team is arguably worse than the supporting cast he's leaving in Milwuakee. And teams like OKC or San Antonio can outbid the Nets if he doesn't have a list.
This plan would make more sense if the Nets were a competitive team who was comfortable in the play-in. In reality, they are 44-65 since trading Kevin Durant and got swept in a playoff series they did not belong in.
They are one of the worst teams in the NBA and are operating like they are an average team who is a big move away from being contenders. It makes no sense.
Question about the NTPMLE: can a team use the full exception if it takes them from a non-tax paying team to a tax-paying team? Could a team that is $1 below the tax hypothetically spend the full 12M+? Thanks as always for these great vids.
You're welcome! And yes, slight taxpayers can use the exception. They just can't exceed the first apron.

The problem with the Nets is that they are so incompetent, & their ownership is so bad that whatever they should do, they won't.
I think they’re very well-run. The front office navigated the Nets out of the Celtics trade mess into a team filled with nice young players that enticed KD and Kyrie to come. And I think they got a ton for KD which sets them up nicely in the long-term. It’s just feels like a waste of a couple seasons if they keep striking out on adding stars now while losing valuable draft picks.

He’s responsible for the greatest collapse in NBA history, he lost 3 superstars in 1 season, traded Kyrie for pennies on the dollar because they didn’t wanna give him as a max contract (and guess who’s in the Finals right now), they waived Ben Simmons physical and took back multiple injured players, he traded all our picks unprotected, he hired the worst coach in the league in Steve Nash (not a KD hire btw like people believe, it’s well reported that was a Sean Marks decision), he gave Vaughn a 4 year extension after half a season of coaching only to fire him 1 year later, he’s been the GM for 8 years and has 3 sweeps and 1 playoff series victory under his belt.
He believes Mikal Bridges is a superstar and it’s been well reported they plan on having him be a “costar” to whoever they attract in free agency or through trade. Houston offered the Nets their picks back for Bridges and Marks said no, which is clearly a sign that he has no clue what he’s doing.
As long as Sean Marks is the GM, it can only get worse
