Great job all round. For me, planning to be single handing when I can get my boat launched and out of the UK, that pirate encounter was very scary. It all ended OK for you all on this occasion and I can tell my own stories of encounters in the past which luckily ended with either no problem or what I would call minimal losses. At the least though would it be possible to report this to local authorities? I can see events like this escalating to a point where there is injury or loss of life and then everyone has a serious problem to deal with.

@@micheldawes1 I was on my Competant Crew (more like bareley competant) course back in 1999 we spent a night in America bay along with another yacht, we had just got back onboard when a rib came alongside with four guys on (All had mullett haircuts - well it was last century) . They were friendly enough at first then when one of our female crew told a guy to rack off he got nasty, The instructor had gone below so it was me two other guys and a girl facing off a hostile group of guys who started demanding booze. Our intructor came back on deck with a flare gun and a machette and the guys left. Must say in the years i have sailed this was the only time i thought it was going to go sideways. AFP took statments and that was the last we heard of it, I've been up there a couple times since with no problems, it is such a beautiful place and on the whole people are pretty tolerant (even of a boat full of lads living it up)

Welcome to Indonesia! As an Indonesian born and raised.. mugging and extortion are pretty standard practice. It's pretty sad.. These type of people want to have better live.. instead of work they torment others for living. I finds it interesting that they said "This is the territory of Raja Ampat NOT Papua. If you don't give me petrol, I'll cut your rope and you can sail away". They were acting like as if they are legitimate water police 😆. It is also not a surprise if the actual water police that does same thing. Authority planting drugs to retort money is also a well known thing in Indonesia. Plus.. they were very mild.. normally, they would rock up in group armed with "Parang" a.k.a machete and displaying more violen for ultimate gain and intimidation. So be really cautious.

I personally wouldn't swim in waters where crocodiles are habitual.
Unlike sharks, crocodiles attack immediately, without any hesitation.
And don't think, for one moment, they won't snatch you right out of a dinghy when they get the chance.

Catalpa are what the Indonesian goverment call online social influencers, There are plenty of Indonesian and Western people that have recently faced Indonesian Court's, prison time, large fines and deportation, from posting negitive comments or videos. What you yourself Nick have said is negitive and just adds to Catalpas troubles. My concern and warnings are correct, if you know what happens with Indonesian law better than I do then ok.
