  • On Feb. 14, 1962, first lady Jacqueline Kennedy gave the first broadcast tour of the White House, offering the public a glimpse of the historic home that had just undergone a $2 million restoration project. In the CBS News Special with CBS News reporter Charles Collingwood, Kennedy narrated a brief history of the White House, taking audiences from the home’s original construction that started in 1792 through its various iterations, rebuilds and former inhabitants. Most estimates show that the hour-long broadcast was viewed by 80 million people. Kennedy also won an Emmy for her performance in the special.

Jacqueline was so poised and soft spoken. Yet she was highly opinionated and very intelligent. Often working directly with John and sitting in on important meetings. Now that I've listened to her tapes, I have an even deeper respect. She was an amazing woman.

She was a victem of men, HUmiliated and degrated in front of the entire World. Her husband sleeping with women and one of the most famous right in the very building she slept. Just like now when women are still treated like they dont exist(trans issue) Jackie was shamefully mistreated and suffered greatly. Its sad when people ignore her real life and act like she had such a wonderful life. She didnt.

@@lennyvelez5929 After the fact, we now know how incredible she actually was. It was a different time. Not going to judge the past, but the role of the first lady was to stay behind the shadows and not participate. She was trained to act "lady-like" and poised, in the way she walked and talked. Now reading her diaries and monologues, many of us undestimated her brilliance. There is no doubt in my mind she wishes her husband was not assassinated.

She won an honorary Emmy for this and her restoration project helped establish the White House as a symbol of American history and transformed it into a museum. Jackie Kennedy was a very intelligent and gracious first lady.

Jackie Kennedy definitely lived a good and very influential life, but I don’t think we can call it beautiful. JFK reportedly only married her for politics and didn’t truly love her. He had numerous extramarital affairs, allegedly told one of his mistresses that he was planning to leave his wife for her, witnessed a portion of his head being blown off in front of her, held pieces of his brain together, and lost their infant son a couple of months before. Her second marriage was mainly for financial security.

I can still remember when JFK was assassinated November 22 , 1963. I was only 6 years old and did not fully understand what had happened. I do remember that it was a time of sorrow with people crying and remember the non stop coverage on TV. Even though I was only 6 I remember the funeral procession and little JFK Jr Saluting his dad , he was only three years old and he turned 3 the day of his father funeral. It is something that everybody that was alive at that time will remember. Just like those of us that were alive when the world trade centers were attacked September 11, 2001.. What strikes me is that the tone and cadence of her voice are so much like her first cousin, little Edith Beale. It's such a haunting sound and a reminder that sometimes people from the very same family that start out with the same exact history can end up in such completely opposite. When she was younger, Edith Bealle was considered one of the most beautiful and eligible debutants of her day. Somehow, listening and watching Jacqueline Kennedy and this video make her story even more haunting and pathetic.
Of course, in their own ways, they both suffered so very much, just in different ways. But I think there can be no doubt that at some point, Edith had a mental breakdown. It's really weird because they both seem so very fragile to me in their own ways. But somehow, Jackie found a way to persevere, but edith did not.

It would sure be refreshing to have a First Lady someday who takes up an interest in our history as Jackie did.

What a revelation to learn that the entire interior of the White House was gutted to bring structural integrity to the structure during Truman's presidency. Seeing that steel skeleton inside the outer walls is a great lesson in American history. The preface narrated by Jackie Kennedy was a wonderful touch that can still inspire our deeper appreciation for this great symbol of our national government.
