The 2021 Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid Is A Roomy, All-Weather Electrified Family SUV

- It's been over 20 years since the #HyundaiSantaFe to America and for 2021, #Hyundai is finally offering a #SantaFeHybrid for the first time. This electrified #HyundaiSantaFeHybrid comes with the same powertrain as the new Kia Sorento, but @hyundai offers this SUV with standard AWD. That does lower the fuel economy a bit over its Kia cousin, but it will give SUV buyers the all weather traction that you cannot get in the Kia.

I have the same car. Bought it on May. This car is very nice. I got around 38mpg combined and around 550 miles range on combined
I got the hybrid limited a few days back. Love it!! Decent fuel economy, plush interior and plenty of features
I’m also, looking to purchase the limited. Can you give me your opinion on the sound quality for this vehicle? Unfortunately, there’s no vehicles in transit at my local to purchase at the moment.
Still like? What is your real world fuel economy?
The Plug-In Hybrid is only sold in a few States. It is not available everywhere. I have this model and I LOVE it. The Safety features are second to none. It drives itself and the adaptive cruise control goes all the way to 0. The car will stop if it finds the car in front has stopped and if the car in front starts again, then this car will start as well. The rain sensing wipers are amazing as well!
You're very good at presentations! Thanks for educating me in my next purchase!
Thank you for the review. Beautiful vehicle, with the tech with it too…
This was the exact video I was hoping for!
Wow, very nice interior, looks and feels like a solid built SUV. Love it!
Have had mine for a little over a week now. I don’t care abbot how fast it isn’t. This SUV is larger than what oriole give it credit for. Shouldn’t even be mentioned in the same breath as a Rav4 (which I got rid of for this Santa Fe) or CRV. At 6’2”, I actually able to drive with the seat not pushed all the way back. Fully loaded SEL premium trim too. Thanks for the review!
Great review thanks!
I picked up a 2022 Santa Fe Calligraphy based largely in part of your video review Soyfan and am absolutely in love with the car, comes with everything that I could want and more. I was able to pick it up without a mark up in PA and drove it back home to NoVA, the tech is just so top notch compared to what I was driving before...

Great review - thanks! Any chance you'll be reviewing the 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe PHEV at some point?
I got the limited trim PHEV Santa Fe a month ago and LOVE it! They are slowly coming into the dealer's lot but don't last for more than a day or two. My commute to work is only 5 miles each way and on small streets, so I am able to get 35/36 miles on battery alone! I finally emptied my tank after 900+ miles of driving! The car is beautiful but I don't need to say more on that...

Below is a copy and paste from a Tucson PHEV forum...Tucson uses the same drivetrain and hybrid platform as the Santa Fe. Great tips for keeping your Santa Fe PHEV and/or Tucson PHEV in EV mode in the cold winter temps.
"We got our Tucson PHEV Ultimate just before we had a cold snap (-10c/-15c). Yes in EV mode only the engine will stay on if the HVAC is on. So my wife warms up the cabin then turns off the HVAC. The engine immediately turns off. The heated seats and the heated steering wheel run off the battery so she always has that on. Now that the temps are warmer (L:3c / H:7c), the EV stays on most of the time. We found that turning the HVAC to low fan, setting the cabin temp to 19c, the engine stays off for the most part.
At first we were initially disappointed that the HVAC had to run off the engine but now the vehicle stays on EV 90% of the time and we are very happy. After 570kms we are getting 3.3L/100kms and that continues to drop. This is really how hybrids work and we have owned a few in the past. The 2022 PHEV Tucson is by far the best hybrid we have had."
I am owning the Kia Sorento PHEV Prestige US Spec for almost a month now (and traded in a Kia Telluride SX Prestige AWD). A truly great car, feels light on the road, great torque and so far I have driven 800 miles and have not yet stopped at the gas station. Look forward to your review on my new Sorento PHEV
^looking forward to see a Sorrento phev vs Santa Fe phev comparison
Question, how much did you still owe on the Telluride and what was carried over and tacked onto the price of the Sorento? I can’t understand people who jump at getting a new car when they still owe 5 years of a previous car loan.
A family member of mine traded his telluride back to dealer after two years and they gave him what he originally paid for it

I can't imagine trying to maintain this thing when it's 10 years old with 300,000km on the odometer
You gotta change the battery which will cost a fortune.
You won't have to, a large majority of people that buy cars brand new replace them every couple of years.
Last month Lexus of Brampton had a 2012 or 2013 Lexus LS 600H. It had 600,000 kms or so. It came with full dealer maintenance records and sold two weeks later. SpeedKar did a tear down a few weeks back of a Toyota Prius motor. It had 400,000 kms or something like that.

My Santa Fe HEV is the best among the vehicles I have owned and driven so far.
Very high tech, quite, roomy, convenient, luxurious, and fuel efficient!
I love this vehicle so much, and its driving assistant mode is the best in the market except Tesla. So much convenient in the traffic jam.
When you fill up the gas what's the average maximum amount of miles that the fuel gage displays? I know it'll change sometimes, but say it's 381, 378, and 398 were the typical fuel gage readings you get on a full tank, I'm looking for the average of whatever it is you get. Are those numbers similar? As well, how long does it take till you have to refill? Do you have to charge the battery?
@@olson_media I typically get around 610 miles to 635miles displayed on the full tank. I drive about 90miles a day for my commute. I have put on 51000miles within 17 months so far and no battery charge needed. I usually get 38miles to 41 miles gas efficiency on the mixture of highway and feather driveway on my commute. Hope this may help you.
My new car😊 Been enjoying it for a month!! However, I thought they said this car would get us 32mpg. I have only gotten 29mpg max with it
That's because of the outdated 6 speed auto and mechanical AWD, which creates more drag in the drivetrain. I agree with Sofyan that a hybrid vehicle should have either a CVT or, at the very least, more gear ratios. It seems like Hyundai kept a lot of the non-hybrid systems in this vehicle to save cost.
It has only been a month, I think you have to let the car break in. Either way that's still very good overall fuel economy for a midsize vehicle.
Idling can lower your mpg
@@Red-Alert a hybrids gas engine is not on at low speeds. So at idle you would not be using any gas.
Just bought a Santa Fe Hybrid. Really like this SUV and all the safety technology it has.
I'm torn between the Tucson Hybrid Limited, the Santa Fe Calligraphy trim with the 2.5T, & this Santa Fe Limited Hybrid bc of the current gas prices which have gotten crazy. The Hybrids have the best efficiency, but I like the performance of the 2.5T with its HP, torque, & 0-60

Hyundai Santa Fe looks good ... A contender ... Refresh should have moved rear turn signals into regular tail light cluster with amber lense/bulb ... Touchscreen should have been intergrated into dash area, looks like an after thought as is ...
No wireless CarPlay on some of these new Kias and Hyundai’s is mind blowing
True but it is cheaply available 3rd party. Also there are some issues with connectivity even wired in the Kias and hyundais that is resolved by unplugging a d plugging in your phone after the initial connection. There are rumors that they are working on implementing full screen AA but you are on your own for wireless.
Hyundai is killing it right now. They're electrifying their entire (mostly) range of vehicles when other companies like Nissan and Honda are only offering gas-guzzling ICE vehicles for the most part. At a time when the world is facing a global climate crisis, Hyundai is taking the lead and preparing for that day when all their vehicles will have to be all-electric. Kudos to them and shame to the other companies who are dragging their heels on electrifying their fleet.

Climate crisis 😂 Do your own research instead of just being fed misinformation from MSM and governments to keep you scared and obidient. Also hybrids and EVs still have very large carbon footprint and use electricity from out grids that overwhelming still run on oil, coal and nat gas. Wind and sun can't blow and shine everyday. There's also 2 billion humans without any electricity that will take lowest cost electricity (coal and oil) so expect global carbon emissions to continue to rise for decades. Lastly remember China and India are by far biggest carbon emmitors with massive populations. Your EV purchase won't save the planet 😉

The Sante Fe and Tucson hybrids have much better looking tech but we went with the Venza for the hybrid tech. Getting 40+ mpg (did a trip around the city yesterday where we got 60 mpg) which easily outdoes both Hyundais.

Do u plan on testing the plug in hybrid?
If you get a chance please ask why there’s no calligraphy version of the hybrids or pulling hybrids??
Hyundai is doing good work. They just need to work on their vehicles getting better mpg. Averaging barely 30 mpg on a hybrid isn't too hot.
Theyre trying to strike a balance and offer value. This model still shares a lot with its non hybrid option and has awd.
If they changed things more from the standard, it would make it more expensive and hurt sales....eventually theyll get to a point where that wont be the case as much, but likely not til a full refresh.
Nice car but I'm conflicted with choosing the Tucson hybrid over this - it's smaller lighter quicker with the same hybrid powertrain (I think?) and nearly as fast as the 2.5T Santa Fe
I own a Tucson Hybrid and owned a '21 Santa Fe Limited (non-hybrid). The seats and ride are more comfortable in the Santa Fe, the backseat in the Santa Fe is also quite a bit larger. I had a transmission fail in my Santa Fe (there was a batch of defective ones made in January of 2021, it was going to take two months to get a new transmission and my wife was going to buy a new car next year, so I traded my Santa Fe in for the Tucson for her. I really like her Tucson but the prefer the Santa Fe for long trips, I'll be getting a new Santa Fe in a few months, most likely a hybrid or PHEV, but a Limited trim for sure. The 2.5T was fast and fun, but with gas prices going up I find that the Hybrid powertrain in the Tucson has plenty of power, especially if you switch it from Eco to smart mode.

My dislikes with this vehicle are the intrusive center console and the turbo lag. For taller drivers, the console reduces the thigh/ legroom area. It felt a bit cramped.
I hope they improve the legroom in future models.
This vehicle has worked its way up on my "to buy list"
What if u have the key fob in ur pocket and ur pushing the button by mistake 🤔 will it still move
I have the 2.5T and really enjoy it. I would recommend it to anyone and prefer the simplicity of the ICE over the hybrid (for now).
Love your content! I was wondering if you could recommend a suv around 40k for someone who commutes 120 miles daily. I also live in Pa so the weather does play a roll. Are the plug in hybrids still receiving federal rebates? Thanks so much far all the wonderful content you continue to put out.
See the other commenter who has a PHEV but only drive 5 miles to work. They see 36-37 from the battery. I see 42-45 miles on battery from a 2018 CT6 2.0E plug-in but also only drive 12 miles to work and can also charge at work.
Yes, unlike GM and Tesla who have exhausted their fed tax credits, Hyundai still has them if you purchase instead of lease.
How's the plugin version 🤔
🔥🔥🔥
I'd like to hear from owners who have a '21 or '22. My concern is that a 1.6 liter + Turbo is undersized as the base (before the electric motor). This is the same power plant combo as we find in the Tucson. So I wonder how this engine holds up with a heavier car.
I drive about 450 miles a week would a Hyundai Santa fa hyper none plug-in be good for me ?
0 to 60...perfectly adequate at what? What ls the end goal?
Hi Sofyan; a great review as usual
I'm currently torn between a '22 Outback Touring 2.5 & either a loaded Santa Fe or Tucson Hybrid for our "road car" (already have a Kia Niro PHEV for city use).
The cars match up pretty well in terms of utility & tech (although Hyundai wins in the tech) but the Hyundai will get 5-10 better MPG. Both Hyundai hybrids in my area a selling for $3-$4K above MSRP. But since I can get the OB with VIP pricing, the OB cost about $8K less.
What are your thoughts on the overall comfort of the OB Touring in terms of comfort for a "road car""?
Who?
If you have a Niro rn then the NX4 HEV is the vehicle for you. You won’t be disappointed
Can you tell me the exact price of the Hyundai Santa Fe in your area specifically the hybrid 2021 and 2022?? I don’t like vehicle colors that have good days and bad days. But I do like this vehicle.
Not sure about this one. The real world MPG difference isnt that much greater than the base engine...the plugin version is more appealing for more electric miles, but I dont think this hybrid model is worth it over the base 2.5 motor...
It will depend on your driving. If you only drive on the highway then there is little advantage other than this is more powerful and quicker than the base 2.5 motor. If you drive mostly city then this is going to give you at least 10 more miles to the gallon. From what I have seen, most people with the 2.5 are getting less than advertised mileage in the city, but the hybrid owners are getting better than advertised, so I would say it's probably more like a 15 MPG advantage in the city. And then there is that extra oomph.
What would you prefer. Santa Fe hybrid limited or kia Sorento hybrid
Santa fe gets you 3 years maintenance included, cheaper sticker price and Htrac AWD.
This will look good in a blacked out version …
The 1.6 is still a good engine
Strange review. You completely forgot to mention the massive area underneath the centre console. More time spent on the infotainment would of been nice. The driving section seemed to be focused solely on the hybrid system and it's acceleration, no real mention of ride quality or handling. If I'm buying a family car I don't care if it's one second slower to 60mph than the other engine option. Since when did we care about range in these sorts of cars? 500 miles is not enough, really?
While I too don't like having to do this, but the underpinnings are the same as the regular gas version, so you can watch his video about that and he talks more about the ride quality in that one.

I agree that a hybrid vehicle should have either a CVT or, at the very least, more than 6 gear ratios. It seems like Hyundai carried over a lot of parts from the non-hybrid (mechanical AWD) to cut costs, which compromises the fuel economy of this hybrid model significantly.
WRONG ON ALL COUNTS.
Manual AWD works much better, solid than e-AWD of toyota.
6 speed allows better towing than 8 speed. HYBRID WORKS BEST WITH NON CVT TURBO ENGINE

I still don't get how it only does 30mpg/hwy....My 6 cylinder pathfinder will do 28 any day at 70mph
Sofyans got a heavy foot. On highway hybrids fuel economy drop almost to ICE equivilants since no regen braking or EV only happening. My 2019 Rav4 hybrid averages 32 mpg at 75 mph.
@@James-il3tq yeah, 32 mpg HWY for small hybrid suv is rather mediocre. I am almost certain, fuel variants play a huge role. Yes, I know, 87 octane is 87 ..is 87...but that's the thing, It's not. Octanes just define detonation resistance. I did a little bit deeper dive on this and depending on state and even county, you will have different RVP requirements for the gasoline. I am pretty sure it affects actual calorific value of fuel, hence engine efficiency changes. Also, driving style on the HWY and NOT using cruise control will help. When driving with even slight terrain variations, cruise control will have to raise revolution or even drop the gear to go up hill and will prevent car from gaining speed on the downslope. If you allow 5-10MPH speed variance by focusing on consistant gas pedal application not speed, you will get better efficiency. Let the car drop revolutions and slow down a bit on ups and let it gain speed on downs. It requires changing lanes often but if you turn it into a little challenge, you can easily gain 2-3MPG on longer trips. Also...my 10 year old VW CC 6MT will do 32-34MPG on flat IL HWY at 75MPH. 2.0L Turbo. Premium fuel from Costco. It's a very low car with relatively low drag coefficient and I will usually have 35PSI cold in tires so that helps....still. 32MPG mate....IDK. Tires play a role for sure. These new cars are often "overtired" lol...Tires are too wide to create better grip but it certainly doesn't help with MPG

Hyundai/Kia improved tremendously around 10 years ago. Yet in popular belief in the USA the customers still think Honda and Toyota are better. Long term your making the right decision. I like Korean cars, but they can’t hold a candle to Toyota.
Good for you to keep your car for more than 200k. I cannot stand driving same car for more than 30k or 3 years. Luckily lease rates have been good for the past 20 years or so.
Capacitive touch buttons killed the Venza for me (and the Tucson). Inexcusably awful to use.
The Tucson Hybrid is the better vehicle. Better MPG, better handling and driving experience and based on my own experience and other reviews the Tucson honestly has as much if not better interior room and cargo space, other than a bit more width in the Santa Fe. It’s similar with the Venza compared to the RAV4 in that the extra length doesn’t really convert to better interior space and cargo room. The Santa Fe has more luxury on the top end and has a more conventional look inside and out, so that may appeal to some people. It is a nice vehicle as I’ve test driven it a few times, but the Tucson Hybrid just makes more sense overall when you start making the comparisons. Hyundai seems to have realized this and is pumping out more Tucson Hybrids than Santa Fes. I’ve seen Santa Fe hybrids sit on the lot for a long time, which should tell you something in this market.
