  • Devil May Cry is one of my all time favorite video game franchises, as I think most of its games are absolute classics. The first DMC gets kind of slept in and I wanted to give a detailed retrospective on why I think this game is so great in spite of it being the first of its kind!

It's cool how so many tropes of this series started off with the first game and keep going:
    - Vergil rivarly
    - Dante getting impaled on his own sword
    - having to fight/subdue your weapon upgrades
    - Dante being a goofball
I hope if Capcom ever remakes this game they will keep some of the proto-RE vibes and mechanics. Would be a shame to turn it into a DMC3 clone with a different setting

I mean, I wholeheartedly agree, but DMC3 is basically the same as far as exploring a goth castle is going. I wish DMC5 had that, instead of being basically a corridor.

@@davion4777 Unfortunately Temen ni Gru is way less fun to explore than Mallet Island. As much flak as DMC4 gets for having Dante backtracking Nero's campaign I like Fortuna's level design way better than DMC3 and 5's, I think it captures DMC1 style way better.

@@theenderkirby939 I mean sort of, as DMC1 has aged like Super Mario Bros. because while they are both fun games, they would not improve until later entries. The one thing I would say is that DMC is based off beat-em-ups, so I would compare it to Mario 64, as it was transitioning that genre into 3D and would set the template for future ones in the genre. But I would say that Mario 64 holds a different place in it's own franchise than DMC so has aged a bit better.

Honestly, Mundus is actually pretty terrifying, because barring Vergil, obviously, he's the only major villain in the whole franchise who is still alive. Last one: DMC1, like DMC3, had a harder release in the US than it did in Japan. NTSC-U Dante dealt 20% less damage to enemies and received 20% more damage from them. The HD Collection uses the NTSC-J release as its base, meaning it's an all around easier experience than the version you played for the video.

The Death Scissors in Mission 6 may have tough visual cues, but it has incredibly fair audio ones. It roars in anticipation of its attacks, including the one where it dive bombs back and forth. Humans generally react faster to sounds than they do to visuals, too. Locking on lets you know its location, so you can use Dante's facing to inform your dodge inputs when you hear the roar.
DMC1 is basically a combat puzzle game, similar to Ratchet and Clank 1 - every encounter has a specific strategy that works best, so knowing what tools to use when is crucial. It makes them feel clunky/limited compared to their successors, but that's part of their charm and challenge, imo.

This is my favorite game of all time. 3,4 and 5 are objectively more refined and complete titles, but there's something about the menu design with all the little animations for equipping weapons and such, the way the secret missions are actually SECRET, the sheer impact the attacks felt like they had, and the absolutely punishing difficulty at first are all points in its favor. It was my first ps2 game and I wouldn't have it any other way. I played the demo at a friend's house and had to have it. I also love how going between missions isn't just going through a menu, and there are even little intermission in between a couple stages where you're free to explore without the constraints of a mission.
It's got a lot of features that later games in the series lack, despite their obviously deeper combat mechanics.

None of the others I've played thus far have been able to meld action, exploration and atmosphere as succinctly as this first game. Later games may have more fun and compelling combat systems, but none of them feel like a full package experience like 1 does. I also think 1 is the only one that feels so *effortlessly cool*. Like it feels like every design decision was made in service of making the game cooler (including the rail shooter final boss, which I unironically love lmao). I think having Air Hike be exclusive to Alastor is a balance thing, as Ifrit already had a unique jump ability in Rolling Blaze. It is also consistent with DMC3, as only 3 of the 5 Devil Arms had the Air Hike move. In my head cannon Dante grew way stronger after DMC1, and so in DMC2, 4 and 5 he could Air Hike regardless of Devil Arm. Another sign of this is that his Devil Trigger form would no longer be influenced by the equipped Devil Arm, as he channels his own power into the transformation.

Also, fun fact: Mundus in the volcano practically forces you to use Sparda's DT, right? Nothing else really does significant damage to him. While you might think there was some kind of weakness flag attached to the DT that makes Mundus take damage from it, the truth is that Mundus just has an outrageous amount of health, and the Sparda DT does an outrageous amount of damage. You can test this by using a cheat device to unlock Sparda DT in regular gameplay. It tears the game apart, ripping through normal enemies like a thousand degree knife cutting through toilet paper. Bosses die in _seconds._ The only downside is that the graphics for it won't load properly until you play the final boss, after which the game will keep them in its memory until you turn it off. I think Δ being jump really fits well with ○ being attack as you have easy access to both at once due to how your thumb rests over both of them.
Also, I don't think that the combat needs to be crazy combo mad to be fun like how with Griffon & Shadow work. You definitely don't need holy water to beat Griffon on the pirate ship, you can beat him with just 3 meteors from Ifrit at the beginning. And I find balancing 3 Shadows to be more fun than dealing with just 1 of them, as when it's just one I'm mostly just waiting to stand on its spear so I can insta-kill it before I take it out normally. Either way, it's more of a case of you needing to defend yourself from their attacks while you counter attack them.
P.S. You can get Alastor at the beginning of mission 2 & also a voice crack in an emotional scene makes sense.

Like, I dunno if you had this experience, but, in my copy, it didn't give me a menu that would allow me to select which game I wanted to play like in the HD collection, it just took me to the first game's title screen, which would imply that I had to play the games back-to-back-to-back. As great as the sequels are, there's some stuff in DMC1 that has never been quite matched for me:
    - Enemy behavior was actually deceptively complex, and your in-game journal would update the more Dante fought things, as he witnessed different attacks and weaknesses his enemies displayed. It really made Dante feel like a Devil _Hunter,_ keeping detailed notes on his prey.
    - Mallet Island was a _sickass_ setting. A big cool castle where a bunch of devil worshipers used to live. The vibes were immaculate, and the way things switch up at night? Chef's kiss.
    - 1 is also the game where Devil Trigger feels the best to use. The unique abilities and huge attack boost made it feel like a true monster being unleashed. 3's DT feels really weak, its few unique abilities not even worth using honestly. 4's is a little better but still not great, and was unfortunately where we stopped getting unique DTs for each weapon. 5 comes the closest to matching the OG, not in it's DT, but in it's _Sin_ Devil Trigger, which is an outrageous force of destruction. But 1 still felt the best IMO.
The sequels surpass the original in plenty of other ways, but I'm still hoping one day we'll get a sequel that truly outdoes the original in _every_ way.

@@jurtheorc8117 it has been a while since I played, so I can't remember everything exactly, but I remember even the basic marionette enemies had multiple different attacks they would use in different circumstances, including a command grab where they would tackle you to the floor, and another move where they would scream and cause you to be lifted up on strings if you were too close. They also wielded different weapons, which altered their movesets.
My favorite enemy in DMC1 was the Shadow. One, it looked cool as hell. Two, it had a ton of different attacks. Three, the explanation for its weakness was actually hilarious; essentially, Shadows were demons summoned hundreds of years ago and enchanted to be resistant to all weapons, but their summoner couldn't enchant them against guns because they hadn't been invented yet. In addition to all that, there was a special trick to beating them extra quickly; when they used this one attack where they shot their head at you like an extending spear, if you jumped up with the right timing and landed on the head, they would be stunned for a moment, allowing you to unload bullets on them which would actually bypass their defenses and do direct damage to the core. With sufficient mashing and a bit of DT, you could kill them near-instantly with this trick.

I replayed DMC1 so many times actually that I remapped the jump button to triangle in any of the future releases I played that allowed me to change it up.

I used to love this game back in the day and was so impressed by some of its aspects. Nonetheless, I replayed it some 4 years ago and DAMN, it wasn't how I remembered it. This is one game that needs a remake. Both because of its story, design and gameplay. Hopefully one day we have one.
After DMC5 it's hard to go back to the other games. Even 4 Special Edition, which has SICK combat, feels a little dated after 5... not to mention 3 (which is still a superb game, but shows its age in every aspect... but, of course is LIGHT-YEARS better than 1. 2 doesn't exist).

Reboot has so many issues it's music, combat even in the definitive version, and level design dont really hold it up above 4 still. 2 is 2 so...lol.

I too feel like DMC1 kinda gets overlooked compared to DMC3 and 5, understandably so but DMC1 as janky as it can sometimes be is still a good game. I might be a weirdo on the subject of the first phase of Mundus being a Space Harrier type thing, but I actually don't mind the first phase with Mundus, in fact I actually kinda like it and I personally don't think is that bad but that's just me.
Might get the Ps2 version at some point, but I'm not going to play it on original hardware with its original controls if I do because like J's Reviews said the controls are backwards. It's somewhat surprising to me that there's not more mods that restore missing effects and textures for DMC1 and DMC3, like Mundus' eye laser being absent when he shoots Trish.

I won't deny that despite smash bros had some influence your original review on the PS2 DMC games gave me the intrest to play the games and I got myself DMC1 and 3 on my switch, I will focus on DMC1 but yeah I can tell is an aquirred taste and isn't for me, the story feel a bit on and off in tone and can be inconsistent in what they want to be in the drama or action department, for an early PS2 game it look good but I can tell I saw better from this era as someone who grew with a PS2 and even on HD the game can look rough in textures, gameplay is what DMC1 hold the best but there is rough spots and you can tell from some designs it meant to be a resident evil game, to start with the positive both weapon are great I found alastor my go to for crowd control and as a swordie felt mostly good but I won't deny I wish it had another mid air move than the dive maybe a rolling slash could be nice, ifrit was my main weapon on one on one encounter to shred enemies pretty much learn the position needed to get charges at time and use dive kicks as my approach or even screw some of with inferno, the guns were in the case of only using the shot gun or granade gun once I reach them, nightmare gun didn't use much and the pistols only against shadows, I did use devil trigger decently only really pulling it for bosses, end of the level or when I rather to run a bit faster.
For my issues with DMC1's gameplay boil down to two main things the sudden fixed camera and claustrophobic level design, the former is something that just get me off gaurd I am not against fixed camera but on a fast game like this is jarring at time and in general being an analog game can mess up with the control as for the level designed I can feel sometimes overwhelmed in very specific rooms, but the worst offender for me is the lack of mission replays which can be tedious and just make whqt could be easy grind to a bit of a chore.
As for how much the game hard for me I would say is in my top 5 hardest game with nelo angelo 3 being the second hardest boss I fought in my life only behind grim matchstick from cuphead and that boil down to his sword and I will say devil may cry 1 is harder than 3 if you ask me, the far more limited moveset, worse camera, aggresivness of enemies and being a game that no style really make a world of difference for me and I am saying it as someone who played DMC1 before DMC3.
Overall I can enjoy devil may cry 1 but isn't a game I plan to return cause kinda like mega man zero 1 the lack of polish and design choises make the game more frustrating than fun for me but I more than understand if people see it more positively

I've tried both dmc1 and dmc3 and got to at least the first boss of each, but the gameplay feels kind of shallow and repetitive. Idk if I just haven't progressed far enough to get into more engaging combat or if the game just does a poor job of explaining it.
