Violent protests rage in France’s New Caledonia amid growing civil unrest

- French President Emmanuel Macron has called a meeting of his defence and security council to discuss the unrest in New Caledonia.
Indigenous Kanak islanders have refused to abandon their roadblocks.
But French forces have made some progress clearing the highway linking the capital to the main airport.
At least six people have been killed and hundreds injured in nearly a week of unrest, sparked by electoral reforms.
New Caledonia is a Pacific island territory--between Australia and Fiji, which was colonised by the French in the mid-19th century.

If all French money; schools health-care, housing subsidies etc were to disappear, the locals would be begging for France to return.

It's a misnomer to say the Independence party isn't supported. They got well over 40% in the last legit referendum.
Once the land belonged to indigenous people, then looters came from Europe, in this case, France. Next, the people of the land do not own the land. They just exist as "indigenous minority" group.

You only point out the giving part and not the taking part. Freedom comes with sacrifices. There's a price to pay for deciding your own destiny. The former Indonesian colony of East Timur is one such example. They got rid of two colonial masters and paid a heavy price. They have been a sovereign nation since 2002.

The French did none of those things out of the goodness of their hearts, or for the well being of the indigenous people. They did it to facilitate nickel extraction and exploit the island’s natural resources for the benefit of its corporations.

New Caledonia is (was?) a beautiful tropical paradise with a French flavor, attracting many tourists and with a good economy. Independence? Haha. What a joke. The island would become a banana republic. The people trying to govern would be fighting amongst themselves. The airline would collapse, and tourists would stop coming. One man, one vote. Oldest concept in Democracy. By denying the vote to thousands of people who have lived on the islands for decades, they are denying them of a voice in their own local governments. Just because the same old "small but vocal and violent" minority don't believe in Democracy doesn't mean the rest of the residents and citizens should be denied it. It's 2024... not 1774. New Caledonia is not some time capsule with natives running around in loin clothes chucking spears and living some simple, pagan, fairytale lifestyle. It is a fully modern French territory and it's citizens are protected by French--AND European laws. So... it's not like the Kanaks are slaves or something. They've had THREE different opportunities (i.e. votes) over the years to find / form a majority that want independence... but that's simply not the case. So they need to get over it.
71% of kanaks live below the poverty line. i dont think french european government have their best interest at heart.

It's not 100% of Kanaks lived below "the poverty line" when the French arrived on the islands... right? Maybe if the Kanak's spent more time studying and working and less time at the barricades--destroying other people's property--they wouldn't be below this arbitrary "poverty line" you reference.

@@veezhang4678Kanak live the life they choose and a lot of them choose tribalism and survival agriculture as a tradition. They are not in it for the money. And this is fine, they do what they want because they live in a democracy and their rights are protected.
