From start to finish I paid close attention to your explanations because I was curious about the transfer process to the new plastic backing which I think if I use this method I wil have to pay more attention to the condition of the moss and the roots which are both not so visible from outside. Because you're already an expert and are our best teacher....you can succeed like this. As a beginner, I will still learn how to use the usual moss pole. This is a fantastic video Jan! I've had such good luck with grow vertical style poles, especially when growing in ambient. And the real learning of this video is that coat hanger hack 😂

This video has everything I wanted, it’s natural, it’s good speed, it was presented in detail with progress over a period of time, like real and clear plant growth, and most importantly, it’s freaking interesting!!!
I was supposed to listening to this while falling asleep as I always do ( not that I found it boring, I have many indoor plants and enjoy plant videos, sometimes I even listen to crime stories because I need background noise to help me sleep) Instead I watched the whole thing! I’ve been converting my collection over to the Thiccly moss poles this last year and I feel it’s been a game changer. Maintenance is easier and because the plastic keeps the moss more moist I’ve been seeing more thick juicy roots ❤

That's crazy! I need to chop and extend my dubia, reaching the top. I might use the plastic backing method instead.
I have a small Siltepecana so I've been using a bamboo stick for support it seems to like it lol i moved it closer to my window and it stood straight up next thing I knew it popped out another leaf ! I'm thrilled lol

Cool vid. I was wondering how you were going to transition. I was thinking “I’d just cut my mesh and use the plastic on the back”, which is essentially what you did. Glad it worked out! I’m using the plastic back poles now too on my Adansonii and soon to be potted monstera esqueleto. Goals to be like you! Thanks.

Great insight on the double shoot. I have a Florida Ghost on a moss pole and was annoyed that it split into to growth points on my moss pole. I found that it’s not really slowing down and it’s now pretty lush. 😁👍🏻

Great video as always, thanks Jan🤗 I'm impressed that you knew exactly what your plant's problem was, and what to do about it. You sell yourself short ! You may not have a degree in it, but you ARE an expert with a lot of knowledge, a natural instinct, and 2 green thumbs.
I have only one plastic backed pole (home made, much fiddlier to make), and another benefit is that it's much cleaner, less droppings. I think Mr Grow Vertical will be flooded with orders. Also, we want to see the chaotic video !!

I often had a problem with plastic backing poles: the moss trends to decompose faster than in mesh poles.
Do you witnessed something similar?

Not difficult, just different. But once I’ve done it a couple of times it should be easy :)

He answered that in his recent q&a from 5 days ago! It’s at 40:50. But short answer no.
Hey, the mesh ended up being approx 10cms long. And no I will only convert some of the really mature ones/the ones I think are struggling to mature. I’m not keen on having 30-40 plastic towers in my apartment :)

Both very stable, never had issues :)
its nice to see a video that shows the back of the plant and how you manage the roots, do you have similar ''problems'' with your philodendron glorious and splendid growing roots out of the back or is this a monstera only issue?
Mainly monsteras but as my glorious is getting more mature I noticed it more frequently. Doesn’t stop it from maturing though :)

What kind of plastic sheet you are using. Im very far but what to imitate your go vertical transparent plastic. I already made a moss pole but i like the effect of the transparent plaatic sheet. Thaks

Do you think the new vertical pole can increase the risk of root rot? The reason that I have this concern is because the new pole has plastic backing that can block airflow. Are you going to adjust the way u water this new moss pole?

Jan - do you ever have issues with new philodendron leaves getting stuck in the cataphyll while unfurling? I bet the humidity from moss poles helps.. I want to throw out my PPP - it's lost like 4 leaves because leaves get stuck and snap or rot away. 🤷🙃
It might be a humidity thing or inconsistent watering but I know that PPP is especially annoying with that

Is it possible that topper leafs are getting smaller are due to amount of light they get are reduced as the plant gets taller. upper portion of windows or sliding doors if they specially open to a balcony get less light (due to upper story balcony or simply light coming from side not top) ? Unlike the forest that amount of light increases as plant gets taller.
Yes, if the plants decreases in leaf size it's most likely due to light :)

I'd be too scared to put the stake on the inside of this, because I can't see that being easy when it comes to the chop and extend ... although it does look nicer and tidier. Did you use your usual mesh for the top extension or did you use the grow vertical mesh (which I'm assuming is just plastic?)?
Hey, i’m hoping i can just slide the stake put when it comes to extension time but in case the roots are taking over I might just have to cut the stake too :P i used the grow vertical mesh which is also plastic coated wire

As a very lazy person, my first thought when I see a need to move to Grow Vertical would be “can I put a plastic sheet on the back of my regular moss pole?”. I wonder if it would work to the point now I want to try it :) I have a few plants with single stems growing on a round moss pole, so I can even form the plastic into “C” shape and place it with some zip ties 🤔 Do you have any experience with the similar/same solution?
Haven’t tried it myself but if you really can’t be bothered cutting the mesh I reckon it would definitely work. You’re just creating a mess and a lot of work in case you ever want to cut the pole into smaller cuttings after a chop & extend
@@sydneyplantguy Thanks for your reply! I’m not sure if I understand what would cause the mess. What I have in mind is just covering part of the moss pole with piece of plastic sheet without cutting anything. Imagine a “hotdog” - moss pole is the sausage, plastic sheet is the bun and your plant is the ketchup/mustard smear on top 🌭. In theory you should be able to take the “plastic bun” off any time, it would only serve the purpose of decreasing moss area open to the air. Or maybe I overthink it 😀

How long does the moss in the poles last until it starts to rot?
It’s doesn’t rot, it slowly decomposes. I haven’t noticed any significant decrease in moss within poles and some of my poles sre almost 2 years old

So I have a question- I just started using plastic poles too, how come you fill the entire thing with moss? Isn’t that more water/fertilizers you have to use? Can you just fill it as it grows?
You can do that but u’ll end up needing to water more frequently:)

Jan, I have a baby dubia on a 10" board. It had already outgrown it by 6" when I bought it, so it ran, and the subsequent leaves are small. I just repotted and added a 2nd board behind the first and have just garden-velcroed the plant down. Should I cut that runner/small leaves off and let it restart from the largest leaf? My plan is to put it on a vertical moss pole in the future, but felt that the baby plant was too delicate to try to pull off the original small board without harming it and the tiny little roots. I have a mature (fenestrating) Dubia coming on import next week and it will go straight to a pole.
Also, I know you don't do "individual help". I tried to keep this generic since I know most people get their first Dubia on little boards from the grower's nursery.
I would get it off the board and onto a moss pole asap :) but if you don’t wanna take if off the board then I would cut the small growth & let it re-shoot
I have my Monstera plants on staking poles and large pots. I also use velcro tape to attach them to the pole. It's easy. Leafs are large. I don't think Monstera needs moss poles. Just an opinion. I mean there is no benefit for the Monstera.
Moss has fantastic propagation benefits which are essential when it comes to chop & extend time :) but you could totally use a different growing medium like coco chips in the pole
@sydneyplantguy I've been watching your videos for a while. I got the concept of chop and prop. I just feel all this work for monstera is overkill. It's going to do it's thing with minimal investment. I am growing my monsteras on fence poles. When they get too big I'll chop of the tops, stick them in perlite until I get enough roots. One time animals ate my monstera's roots. I put the monstera in leca so the animals can't get to the roots. I had large plant and no roots. It made it. I guess is I am making the point that this plant is so easy it is going to grow on any piece of wood and propagate easily in all kinds of mixes. I personally prefer to grow cuttings in perlite. I saw people on CZcams having success with monstera and that's why I copy them. That's too long. Peace ✌️

Have you used different brands of moss, do you actually see a difference? Such a range in price and one pole uses so much, so I'm always trying to use the cheaper brands on Amazon, but do you think that would make a huge difference in growth?
He uses the Brunnings brand - it's a NZ brand we get in Australia
I haven’t experimented with different brands because the one I can get here is fantastic. A lesser quality moss could have less water retention capacity or even come eith bugs/fungal issues. If moss is very expensive where u are you can try coco chips instead
you gotta do something about your audio, it's not very good. good plants though...
