YOU: "I love him in 'That '70s Show."
ALL OF US: "You ain't gonna love him in this."
This film hits even harder knowing that Robin Williams passed in the same manner. Heartbreaking.
Well technically Robin Williams hung himself.
@@MsTeaRex Actually, it's "hanged." But technicality is hardly the point, is it?
The whole point of OP's comment was that Robin Williams also died by s**cide. The exact manner is irrelevant.
As a teacher myself I adore this movie. Nothing makes me happier than seeing a student learn a lesson that wasn't on the "official" lesson plan.
Absolutely
[Me: wincing super hard when Nick believes Neil is telling the truth about having talked to his father, and when he is so happy and excited when dad shows up to the play.]
Director: "Ok Robin you're just playing a teacher no need to ..
Robin:🔥
Seeing you tear up at just the cut to the back of William’s head… I cried with you, had to pause and come back to cry some more. Seriously, what a treasured performer and human, he will be missed. ❤
I always love your reactions but I was LIVING for your face and comments when that guy was caressing, kissing that girl who was asleep.
You INSTANTLY switched from “aww” to “No. She is asleep. Not okay.”
Bravo, sir.
Interesting. I'm gen x. Nobody thought a kiss on the head was an invasion of significant boundaries then...i had a girlfriend who's previous boyfriend did that to her and when her friends told her she was so happy and that's how they hooked up but he went into the military and they got bored. I thought it was kind. I had to learn to slap one of my short term girlfriends on the ass even though that's not my thing. A friend of mine put a tab of acid in my burrito and I had so much fun and met God..i couldn't thank him enough. Consent is super important but intimacy is real important and has become real stale in younger and older generations in my opioion. I was raped as a kid and gangstalked throughout my life by the head of Scientology and the federal government mind control programs..community stalked and that was not cool...no love or fun involved. One of the reasons I became a targeted individual is that I think freely and don't follow social norms. Also the Knox guy in the movie had no I'll intent was super drunk and the sieze the day was flowing and got beat up for it. If he had not done that kiss and gotten beaten up for it they would not have come together.
39:40 "is that just a dead donkey in the middle? ... ... ... ohkay." bahahah
I knew the scene with Neil would be particularly heartbreaking for you, Nick. It's such a tragedy that no one can truly explain at the end of the day. Robin Williams' character's reaction to it makes it all the more crushing. I do love how the ending makes up for it, though; it's a bittersweet ending that leaves you knowing that the characters you've grown to love will most likely be ok. Hope you're doing well after this movie and that The Hangover puts you in a lighter mood!! 😊
I hate the fact his father will likely never realise that his son did what he did because of him
Whenever I watch the mom’s reaction after the suicide it brings back memories of my neighbor getting the news her son had died in a car accident. We were on our back porch and could just hear her start shrieking “it can’t be him, he’ll be home”. Something I’ll never forget.
"O Captain! My Captain!”
O Captain! My Captain! our fearful trip is done;
The ship has weather'd every rack, the prize we sought is won;
The port is near, the bells I hear, the people all exulting,
While follow eyes the steady keel, the vessel grim and daring:
But O heart! heart! heart!
O the bleeding drops of red,
Where on the deck my Captain lies,
Fallen cold and dead.
Written by Walt Whitman
The one kid was doing a poem in slant rhyme, a popular thing used in a lot of hip hop and rap songs.
I'm so glad to see that times have changed and that the newer generation recognise that the scene where he kisses the girl when she was asleep is not ok. In the past it was considered a romantic carpe diem moment but it's actually sexual assault.
If there’s one thing that I did learn from this movie is that you cannot control someone’s life.
O Captain, my Captain! This film still yanks on my heartstrings, especially after Robin Williams' untimely death. Neil and Todd definitely deserved better.
Thank you for watching this Nick! I love this movie, Robin Williams and the actors playing the boys were all amazing and this movie is one of Robin Williams’ best!!
I remember my 12 grade English teacher showed us this movie towards the end of the year to inspire us for the future.
I missed that you watched this. 🤗 The thing about Robin is that he was diagnosed with a disease that was going to remove all that he was. I don't know if you know but he was best friends with Christopher Reeve since college. He had to watch him never recover from a horrible accident over many years. We all hoped Mr. Reeve, who we were used to seeing fly, would one day walk again. But one day out of the blue the word came that he had died. His wife who had stood by him died not that long after. It took such a toll. So I feel that Robin having watched all that probably wanted to spare himself and others from the same fate. So what makes me sad is that he got that diagnosis. I wish he could have stayed around to entertain us but the fact is he probably wouldn't have been able to and would have suffered knowing that until the end. He was such a great actor and made everyone so happy. I'm sure he knows that. 🙏🏼
Actually I think Neil was horrified his father showed up because he lied to Keating, he never talked to his father.
I knew this was going to be a tear jerker for you 😢
Somewhat ironically, the actor that played Neil grew up and went on to play a doctor in House, MD with Hugh Laurie.
Yeah, Keating even shows doubt when Neal says that he spoke to him. You can see it in Robin Williams' facial expressions. And when Mr. Perry and Neal drives off, Keating knows that the consequences are going to be severe. He probably deep down already knows that his days as a teacher at the school are numbered.
And Robert played a teacher in a play where he was helping a student, that just makes this even better
This movie makes me cry so much every time. I cry at the bit in the beginning when Robin Williams talks about why we read and write poetry, and then of course again constantly after the play... It's such a good movie.
Neil walking down from that dark stairs always gives me the chills
Boys' prep schools that were not affiliated with religious institutions often had "chapel" as a regular event of greater or less importance. In some cases, it seemingly was more like homeroom, but with a prayer instead of the Pledge of Allegiance (which was gradually introduced during the course of the twentieth century, only reaching its present form in the 1950s). There were also schools unaffiliated with the military that nevertheless had military-type uniforms and drill exercises, though not calling themselves 'military schools'. Boy prep school novels, going back to Tom Brown's Schooldays, inevitably have what is nowadays called a 'queer reading'-not necessarily with authorial intent-with deep affections portrayed between the boys. This film is no exception, in its portrayal of Neil and Todd. It is hard to read Neil's passion for acting as anything but a metaphor (at least!) for being gay; his father's reaction to it only really makes sense that way. The script could have let Neil play Romeo or any other Shakespearean character-but he is literally playing a fairy, to his father's disgust. The several references in the film to Walt Whitman, known to enjoy the company of men, only emphasizes the 'queer reading'. Is Neil gay? ""Gay-coded"? It's left up to you, as it should be. Robert Sean Leonard has had a long career, but the expressiveness of his face was never better employed than in this film. I see on Wikipedia that he was nominated for the Most Promising Actor by the Chicago Film Critics Association.
In the last scene, Cameron, the guy who ratted out Keating, does not stand on his desk. This was the actor's decision, he thought it was more consistent with his character, and the director approved. The scene is better because not every boy stands up.
The only reason that you instantly recognized 'carpe diem' is because of this film! It was not a huge critical success, but you, like everyone else, will never forget it.
None of that was in there. It's the later interpretation of individuals looking at culture through their own perverted lenses, and attempting to MAKE people think it's there.
@@kelaarin An important aspect of "queer coding" is that it allows for complete plausible deniability. But it's interesting to compare *Dead Poets Society* to *Another Country* (1984), also set in a boys' school, in which a gay relationship between two students, openly presented as such, is a central element of the plot.
A lot of the Senior English classes in my high school had to watch this movie. My friend loved it, from what I remembered, I was pretty bored with it until the last act. A few years later, I was writing a book where multiple characters have suicide ideation and attempts and one character succeeding. I did a lot of research on multiple different aspects of adolescent psychology in terms of depression, conformity, addiction, SA, and suicide. I made a list of films to watch with these themes in order to kinda mentally prepare myself and look into these subjects more and how others write them. This movie was on the list and upon rewatching it, I viewed it in a much more mature light and finally understood it. This film truly is a masterpiece and I'm glad I can see it that way. It really makes sense why Neil did what he did in the end. He said and felt more than once how trapped he felt and in reality, what other choice did he have in that moment? His father wasn't the main reason he did it, but his father trying to keep tightening the leash was his tipping point to where he felt like he had no other choice. It is a very real movie in that way and something a lot of people go through with their families. Love this movie so much, thanks for watching it, Nick! I wish I could've given you a hug through the screen💖
42:48 You know that's an interesting take I had never thought of him contemplating killing his father
You’re right, you’ll think about it for the rest of the night.. but spoiler alert... you’ll also keep thinking about many of these scenes for decades!
That was one of my favorite movies when I was young. In college, we watched it and we had to pick the character that related to us more and write an essay explaining why. I wrote mine on Todd Anderson. Nowadays, I don't think I could sit through the whole thing again. It's just too emotionally draining
YES! Thanks Nick, this is one of my favorite movies of all time (easily in my top 5), from the storytelling, the characters and ofc ROBIN FREAKING WILLIAMS.
This movie just shows you to always remind yourself to look everything from a different perspective, carpe diem and do what you love; Think for ourselves.
Oh captain my captain Robin Williams.
Oh captain!!!! my captain!!!!!!! RIP Robin Williams we miss you ❤️🌹❤️🌹❤️🌹
Often imitated, never duplicated
This movie helped me at a young age to think about things more broadly and has helped shape the Man I've become
O capitan, My capitan!! This is a sad but beautiful movie and i happy to see this again with you my capitan🥺💕
I must say out of all the reactors ur heart and energy feels so pure in ur reactions, so genuine. Never change brotha!
First film I ever cried at. I hope you keep exploring Robin's catalogue.
Awww, I love Robin Williams. Met him once
O Captain! My Captain! our fearful trip is done;
The ship has weather'd every rack, the prize we sought is won;
The port is near, the bells I hear, the people all exulting,
While follow eyes the steady keel, the vessel grim and daring:
But O heart! heart! heart!
O the bleeding drops of red,[a]
Where on the deck my Captain lies,
Fallen cold and dead.
O Captain! My Captain! rise up and hear the bells;
Rise up-for you the flag is flung-for you the bugle trills;
For you bouquets and ribbon'd wreaths-for you the shores a-crowding;
For you they call, the swaying mass, their eager faces turning;
Here captain! dear father!
This arm beneath your head;[b]
It is some dream that on the deck,
You've fallen cold and dead.
My Captain does not answer, his lips are pale and still;
My father does not feel my arm, he has no pulse nor will;
The ship is anchor'd safe and sound, its voyage closed and done;
From fearful trip, the victor ship, comes in with object won;
Exult, O shores, and ring, O bells!
But I, with mournful tread,
Walk the deck my captain lies,[c]
Fallen cold and dead.
*sees title*
oh no, Nick's gonna be destroyed by this movie
*immediately clicks play*
I loved the guy who played Neil in the movie Swing Kids with Christian Bale, too.
Yes!
Robert Sean Leonard is his name.
Perfect movie❤ rarely is it ever caught on camera and everyone here did amazing roles. RIP Robin 🖤
Anyway: your reactions are always wonderful and heartwarming. Nice to see there are still good people out there. Thanks very much! ❤️
This is one of those movies that I absolutely love and think are absolutely amazing, but will probably never watch again because I can’t handle the tears and sobbing that ensue.
I watched this movie in class in middle school (I think it was an end of the year thing, but it could've been part of the curriculum).
You can't cry in middle school.
This film is based on The Scots College, a private all-boys school in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs. In 1994 Scots College performed this film as a stage play.
I watched this as a pirated VHS that was passed around the neighborhood in 1990. It was such a rare gem.
Carpe Diem, Seize the day.
I was a literature and performing arts major in high school in the 80s. DPS still ranks high on my list of favourites in cinema with Walt Whitman remaining my fave poet. His tome, LEAVES OF GRASS is still on my shelf and I read twice a year when I miss living in NYC. Anyway....
Some of the actors, like Robert Sean Leonard, Ethan Hawke and others, continue to act/ direct/ write/produce on films, in television and Broadway and are mentors now still speak fondly of the late, great Robin Williams.
I was the same age as the young actors were in this film when this movie was being made in a town in Delaware not far from where I and my friends lived across the border in Maryland. It is indeed that beautiful an pastoral as the seasons changed in that region. My fellow film fanatic pals and I piled into cars and drove to where they were shooting in that area. I had my dad's binoculars. lol. A cpl. friends remembered to bring cameras but we weren't able to get close enough to garner a worthy & clear shot of anyone unfortunately, but I'll never forget that time, and each and every scene, the poems and poignant moment between "Mr. Keating" and his words of motivation, inspiration and encouraging them to dare to be & think for themselves with his students, lingers in me decades hence.
Glad you ranked this 'coming of age' feature so highly, Nick. Carpe Diem, everyone!
One of the best movies I have watched. Hollywood does not make movies like this or stand by me. So glad your reaction.
So excited to watch this one, such an emotional ride!
I'm so glad you're watching this movie, Nick. It's one of my favorite movies with Robin Williams.
Fantastic movie!!!!
In 1970 - when I was 12 - I had a teacher a little bit like Keating. Best teacher I had at school or university. Shout out to Mr Brian Stuart King - he will live with me until the day I cease to draw breath.
I have a recommendation for you. I think you could watch the french film "Amelie" it is a very wholesome story about love and it has a very wes anderson vibe. It is still one of the best french movies out there. You can find it with subtitles! Knowing your personality I think you would like it. It's really quirky. Give it a try please!
32:50 Fun fact, they drill holes into the wood so there's less wind resistance and it travel faster to impact
Oh captain, my captain!
I really love this movie. I haven’t seen it in years but it was a favorite for a long time.
I haven’t seen this movie since High School
OMG! I'm so glad you watched this movie, it's easily one of my favorites
Dead Poets Society is a great Robin Williams movie.
YES! Omg this is my favourite movie ever I've been obsessed with it for years
So I learned recently there was a much longer version of the film that was over 140 minutes long before it was edited down. Which makes me think there was probably more character development in that longer cut. Also Robin Williams was nominated for a Best Actor Oscar for this film losing to Dustin Hoffman in Rain Man.
Also I wanted to ask will my last three requests be coming up soon?
Yep!! Before the end of the month!!
@@nickflix8657 Awesome. I look forward to that. Thank you.
I hope ur doing well Nick. And as usual I love watching ur reactions❤️
Loved your reaction to this movie. It's such a sad, but beautiful film. That ending is so powerful! Thanks Nick! 🙂
Hopefully someday you should watch the Florida Project. It’s a really great movie. Willem Dafoe, and the actors that played Moonee and Hailey were so good in it. I recommend you reacting to it. But it’s also an emotional film.
Middle of the night and in tears as usual after watching this…. I’m 42 and glad younger people can respect this classic !!!!!
Excellent movie!
I love how emotional you get with your reactions. So many people, especially guys, try to hold in when moments in a movie move them to tears, but you just let them flow and that's awesome. I'm so glad you enjoyed this film so much. It's a favorite of mine. I first saw it in my high school English class and it confirmed for me that I wanted to be an actress and a writer, which I am today. As obviously lovable as his more over-the-top comedic performances are, Mr. Keating is my favorite Robin Williams role. Carpe diem!
I'm really happy you decided to do this one! It's a wonderful movie and I hope you carry it with you in your life It has some great lessons
R.I.P. Robin Williams
I’ve never seen this movie before. I’m glad you’re reacting to it. Also, I love Ethan Hawke and Robin Williams.

Hey Nick! Miss seeing u reacting to classic movies especially Robin Williams! Yeah this movie was amazing I remember watching it as a teen and being so mad it gets that dark in the end. Keeep doing ur thing Nick!! I can relate to what you been going thru. I like to think of this quote from uncle Iroh during tough times.
“Sometimes life is like this dark tunnel, you can’t always see the light at the end of the tunnel, but if you just keep moving, you will come to a better place.”
STAY UP BROTHA MUCH LOVE
Love this movie so much, so excited to see this!!
When I first saw this I watched it with others, and If I had been alone I would have probably cried. 😅
Its been hard for me to watch Robin Williams movies since his passing, but thats why I like watching them here with you! It helps seeing someone react for the first time and adore his performance like I used to 😊
You’re a good soul, my friend... Thank you for what you share with us 🖤
Robert Sean Leonard was amazing. He acted across from Hugh Laurie in the show House too.
I can't make it through that scene...even in a reaction, because I know it's coming. I'm not sure if you've seen Good Will Hunting. Robin Williams did a LOT of great films.
I can't believe it: this actually WASN'T on my recommendation list.

You are a darling beautiful soul.
You are genuine, and moved, and it reads beautifully.
Love rewatching classics with you.
You should watch Bicentennial Man. I think that’s an extremely underrated Robin Williams movie. More people need to watch it. But this has been one of my favorite movies for decades. 💙💙💙
This is a special movie for many reasons..
The actor who played the principal lived to be 107 years old
This is one of my top favorite movie of all the time, probably top 2 or 3, the acting, the Niel death is so heart broken, his father broke his dreams and he couldn't keep it on, he couldn't stand for himself, and sad that a lot of times authorities found a scapegoat to pay, instead of really try to understand what happened, the Oh Captain my Captain scene is for me a top scene of all time, like the S, Redemption when Andy escape from the prison, and love that is Todd the one that start the action, and to see that a lot of student stand out even if they expelled them, and love than not all the students stand up, not everyone is going to change, Keating change the life of this boys...
After that, you should watch the french movie " The Chorists " it has the same vibes.
It's one of my favorite
Excellent reaction, Nick👍👍👍!
I miss Robin Williams so much. 😞
I absolutely love this movie it actually really got me into poetry!! Also, I'd love to see you react to Avatar: The Way of Water!! :D
2016 In Central High School Library We Watch That Movie I Was 18 Years Old
Some people have this theory around Charlie Dalton being non-binary, and I think maybe is for the nowanda think haha, cuz Wanda is a more common girls name than a boys one, and I like this idea.
And also the fact that he wants women to be part of his club, even if this looks like he is flirting, also could mean he see no real differences between both genres.
There's also a theory that Todd was in love with Neil.
May I recommend Mona Lisa Smile? It's actually a lot like this movie, but instead the life lessons are taught through the lens of art history, and it's a largely all female cast!
I SECOND THIS
Or the Divine Secrets of the Ya Ya Sisterhood
Thank you for your reaction!!!
Nick hasn’t seen A Midsummer Night’s Dream before…
You should definitely watch "Finding Forrester" with Sean Connery
42:40 This was my first thought and to be honest it never occurred to me that he would shoot himself.
One of my favorite movies.
Is okay Nick, this movie is kinda old, and I too feel so uncomfortable about the fact that Knox was so over the girl.
i liked it it was awesome and cool you are the best youtuber in the whole earth
