What Mike Portnoy brings to any song he plays, puts him on another level. His chops are insane. I’ve been playing drums almost thirty years and try as I might, I can never sound like him. Dream Theater May no longer be his family, but he’s still one of the best drummers alive.
@@6393dude I love it how people always shit on Portnoy's technical abilities. I mean, is he the most insane technical drummer in the world? No, but the man definitely has some serious chops. I think there is very little rock/metal/prog drumming this man couldn't play if he chose to. Jazz? No. But he's not a jazz drummer.
I agree. They are just jealous because they'll never be as good as Mike. They're nothing but a bunch of nobodies that don't have the balls to post their own videos to see how they stack up against Mike.
Doesn't matter if he is an asshole or not (I know he is not), the man played on Images And Words, and Scenes From A Memory (among others), so nothing but respect for that.
What makes Mike, and amazing drummer is that he's amazing person. I met Mike a while ago at a drum clinic . Midwest drum , and percussion right here in Wichita Kansas, and to say the least, I was very impressed by his humbleness more than his musicianship. If you suck as a person then nothing else about you matters anymore. Oh yeah he was drumming for dream theater at the time, and Mike had just finished touring with them at that time. So I like Mike.😁👍🏼
Man I miss Mike in Dream Theater. Not a thing against the current Mike inhabiting the band; they just don't sound the same now. Still love them too, just so very different without Mr. Portnoy.
+CodeStation Mike wasn't only the drummer, but he essentially controlled the band and their sound. It is therefore no surprise the DT doesn't sound the same. They aren't bad, just not as good as it used to be IMHO.
+CodeStation I like new Dream Theater and I dont miss Portnoy. You know why? Because he made this band more metal than prog, inserting death metal things into Dream Theater prog music (like strange growl). Last album with Mike P is shit. Next album, ADTOE is brilliant, because they are again more prog, than metal.
+Gerard Szczepański I beg to differ. Black Clouds & Silver Linings was more prog than anything. Not to mention that Systematic Chaos and Train Of Thought were the real "metal" albums of DT. JP also takes the share of blame when considering that they went into a more metal phase? Still don't get it? Listen to the self title album.
OSI is awesome. Gavin Harrison really took the drumming to a different level. He really is the drummer of choice nowadays. Too bad the band never toured.

Richard Poschmann I'm mostly influenced in my writing, of the style of Vinnie Paul, Ulrich(laugh all you want hehe).. ..I can speculate what I meant by technical i ment style, and I'm quite influenced by Portnoys style of fills

Mike B I personally love Mikes playing style it’s not all about technique. I view Portnoy how someone might view Bonham. His style is tasty and powerful and he has a great sense and ability to push songs forwards. I drum myself and I’ve listened to some crazy guys like Gavin Harrison, Marco minneman, mangini, Danny Carrey etc. all of whom I’ve enjoyed immensely. I wonder what Mike thought about recording two albums with Kevin Moore considering when he left Dream Theater Mike said that he didn't want anything to do with Kev.
Maybe he reconsidered it afterwards. He did say later on that recording the first OSI wasn't all fun. That's why on the second one, he recorded the drum tracks as is and on a different studio and they exchanged files online
He said he was truly excited to work with Kevin again, but it ended up being the same old unfun bullshit. Kevin I believe said something about how Mike wanted to make up his own drum lines rather than playing what Kevin had in mind for the song, so you could see how that led to differences there. Especially since OSI came about from Jim Matheos sending Moore some riffs from the upcoming Fates Warning album to put keyboard lines over...and instead, Moore chopped them up and made these tracks. So I think Portnoy thought it was gonna be more of a Fates Warning / Dream Theater style band but it was more of a Chroma Key style "Kevin Moore with a backing band" project.
Love the sound of those drums. Only thing I don't like is the sound of the bass drum. I'm sure, if I had headphones on I could hear the sound of it, but just listening on open speakers, all I can hear is just the tapping sound the mallet makes when it hits the head.
I see a 57 on snare. Are those Audix on the toms? I wonder what is the kick mic? Kick sounds great as always , even though its way smaller than the usual mp kick. He could've used this kit on any project, sounds great. ha
