  • Gary Newbon report on Aston Villa's match against Dynamo Kiev in the European Cup quarter finals, played in Simferopol in the Crimea.
    The match was moved to Simferopol due to icy conditions in Kiev. Street scenes in Simferopol including an outdoor market. Exterior of the team hotel with Union flag visible in the window. Interview with player Allan Evans about the poor conditions in the hotel and shots of a hotel bathroom with broken toilet and flooded floor and the bedroom. Shot of the team playing cards in the hotel. Brief shot of players warming up in the stadium. On board the team coach, Gary Newbon talks to Evans who will miss the match due to injury and Andy Blair who will play in his place. Shots of both teams on the pitch prior to kick off including women in national costume presenting them with flowers. Vox pops with Aston Villa fans about the poor food and hotels in the county. Shot of fans in the stadium. Shot of players leaving the pitch at the end of the goal less draw. Interview after the match with manager Tony Barton and players Gary Shaw and Des Bremner.

    Imagine waking up to seeing those blocks of flats on that hill, at the start of the video. It looks so depressing, you'd want to get out of town very quick. Also, seeing those people around that vegetable market stall, they all look the same dress wise, it looks very cold and depressive. The interior of the hotel rooms was absolutely disgusting. Communism in Kiev, very depressing. But it's nearly 40 years ago in 1982. It looks like life, just after the 2nd world war.
