- Each time a meteorite enters our earths atmosphere, people scramble to find where it landed. And for good reason: not only can meteorites hold iron, millions of years old, they can even hold diamonds! In fact, the largest known black diamond in the world, came from a meteorite, and sold for over $4.3 million! A meteorite could make a person rich, if not a proud owner of something, that’s older than the earth itself.
As the story goes, around 120 years ago, at the small town of Santa Claus, Indiana, a meteorite crashed into the countryside. The crater that it left, caused quite a sensation. People travelled long distances to look for fragments, or simply make a wish, at this rare, cosmic impact site. But behind the sensation, was a very twisted backstory. Come along for an adventure, as we visit the legendary meteorite crater of Santa Claus, Indiana, and explore an unusual piece of local history!

Thanks Rodger. I moved to Indiana ten years ago. I'm an outdoors guy but don't know the area. I have a son now and we use your videos to check out the state like my father and I did in the past in Texas. Again, these video are more than what you believe.
Roger is full of information and indiana has so much to explore.

Columbus is a sesspool of corruption and tyranny. It is a neat place to visit, lots of cool art and architecture, but you really, REALLY, don't want to live there. That county has the highest property taxes in the entire State.

Having grown up 4 hours from here I found this all very interesting. I am 70, went to Santa Claus Land when I was a little girl.
I went to Santa Claus Land when they had the baby deer petting zoo. As a kid, I thought that was the most amazing thing I’d ever done!

Lots of cool things in southern Indiana. One of my favorites is the Wesley Chapel Gulf in Orange County. Basically, the Lost River disappears underground for over 20 miles, and re-appears again at a place where a cave roof has collapsed. I caught it once when it was flooding badly, and I have to admit it was downright scary. The Southern cave was making a sucking noise, and I realized, “You accidentally slip into the water, no one will ever know what happened to you.”

Did one about Spring Mill, last year. They’ve changed a lot of things, including a new ramp to Donaldson Cave. My favorite State Park, by far.
What remains of a really big ancient meteor crater can be seen in NW Indiana. It's called the Kentland Crater in Newton County. There are write ups about it online since geologists didn't figure out it was a crater until 1971. You'll see a rock quarry where the different types of rock and coal seams are vertical with some folding. That strata once was thousands of feet below the surface until big meteor impact pushed down the ground where that strata rebounded straight up to create a rebound cone that around 4 miles in diameter. Erosion and glaciers have erased the crater and bulldozed an estimated 1000 feet off the top of the rebound cone.

As I spent most of my younger years working and very little discretionary money, I didn't do much exploring except my local area of Indiana. I left there 12 years ago but your videos have almost convinced me to return and if we ever get global warming I might just do that. 😁Keep the interesting and educational videos coming. They should be distributed to all Indiana schools.
I love most everything about Indiana but the cold winters! But, the winters along the Ohio River seem much milder than when I lived in Central Indiana. In fact, I’ve been able to film every month of the year, with only a few really cold days. But, glad for spring to come my way!

These videos are fascinating. Reminds me of watching some if the old PBS shows. I moved to southern Indiana from northeast Arkansas almost 10 years ago. This is exactly what Ive been looking for to get to know more of the history and culture. I had heard small parts of the stories on some of these places through some of my family passing down tales from relatives that lived here over a hundred years ago but for the most part noone remembers much of any of it.
I grew up just south of Indianapolis, watching a PBS program called, “Across Indiana”. I absolutely loved it, and it gave me a ton of great adventures. When I moved to southern Indiana, I couldn’t pull that station, so ended-up making my own CZcams Indiana travel show! 🙂
I was talking with a fellow historian the other day. Schools don’t teach these rich stories, which are usually oral traditions, and not written down. I’m always delighted when I find them!
@@AdventureswithRoger I was on vacation at an RV park right by holiday world. Even though I had taken time to talk with some of the camp guides, never once did they mention any of the stuff you brought up like how Santa Clause got its name or the meteorite crater.
There are craters all over but many of them are covered in dirt, vegetation, & development. We have a large one here in the Mols/StPaul area thatwas recently diecovered. It's covered in development.

Nice, been there a few times but never knew the history
It was nighttime and I was going to Richmond and something streaked over the hood of my car, narrowly missing it. The next day the state paved the highway, and the turning lane to Wallace Rd. That's where I think it landed. It's by Northeastern High School in Wayne Co outside of Fountain City. I'm not sure what it was, but it was very small, and moving pretty fast, and was glowing red with a small trail behind it.
Something similar happened when I was a kid. Whatever it was, only missed the family car by 20 feet or so.

Well done video and lots of Indiana sites. I'm here for the Space Fall, oh well, learned something different. I really like the divine provenience part, I researched the world's mythology for chicken little stuff and I've found that everyone seems to have an aversion to things falling from the sky and will glaze over at talk of such things, including Anthropologist and Astrophysicists! For example, the iconic bull symbol to them is about virility and will not even venture that it is about the Constellation of Taurus.
There was a great deal of bull worship in ancient times, but they also knew the constellations better than most people today. There were no city lights, industrial air pollution or electronic devices to fill the time. They had beautiful, clear skies and time to make note of what they saw. Curiously, many different ancient cultures, considered the constellations the same animals.
Holiday world is awesome too
In 2011, we had a meteor crash behind our house in a field in Jackson County. It left about a two ft shallow crater and was shattered into hundreds of small pieces. We saw and heard it. I have peices of it. The interesting part is it's not the first, or last, meteor to crash in our area.
One night when I was a kid, a meteorite missed the family car by about 20 feet. We never thought to go back and see if it did any damage.

@AdventureswithRoger most likely. The crater in our field looked like a firepit with burned rocks. Had we not actually seen it hit, we wouldn't have known any better.

Sometimes it’s just accidental, happy discoveries! But I do a lot of deep research for some of these. The internet has helped me, immensely, but so has talking to people in small towns. On many occasions, the history is written nowhere, and only resides in people’s memories. I’ve felt honored to capture some of those type stories, and preserve them.
the Leo constellation depicts a lion with keen accuracy. I think there is a king in the heavens also conditioning our mind to that reality

OMG! I don't think I could live in or even near an town entirely revolving around Christmas and Santa. I was born on Christmas eve, and on my moms birthday, it was really good when I was a little girl, but after she passed when I was just 13 well you can see why it went south for me.
Anyway I am curious about the black eagle on the abandoned building that shows right after the workshop, what is the significance of that eagle? I ask because it was over the back door of the house i grew up in, in Cincinnati and also on my dads garage door. I have always wondered why they were there and what they meant. Sorry if this is hard to read its really early for me when I just got to bed at like 330 am. All the neighborhood dogs barked, whined, howled and anything else you can imagine all frickin night long! Lol. Think there is a bear roaming around. Or something......😂

Eagle ornamentation was very popular Americana, dating back to the Eagle being chosen as our national symbol. It’s kinda like the large federal stars you see, on many old buildings in Indiana.
@@AdventureswithRoger oh ok that's simple lol. Down here they hang up big star quilts I can't remember what they're called and they are all different shapes, sizes , colors ect. Most of them are either all iron or encrusted with fine diamond material. There’s probably a way to figure it out without tearing into it.
@@AdventureswithRoger mine is iron an nickel i think. Some how i forgot what the other part is with the iron but I have a sample of it an a burn charcoal piece that broke off when I pulled it out of the truck. It said to use a diamond saw to get a iron sample. We're going to take the samples to a museum in Chicago. To be verified. An they keep the samples it said. Might be worth 120,000. It's my brothers and he died an now i have cancer like he did a year ago an died. I'm wondering if I'm gonna die on the same day as him. So my sister gets the money now. Hope she doesn't die too. I have to go live with her soon. Kills me to leave my house. I been giving stuff away from me an my brothers house. Got 2 people that want my living room wall. Haha. I salvaged it from my parents house. An thought how am i gonna get rid of a wall! Knotty pine with a 6' by 6' book shelf on it. An my grandmas stained glass front door. Hope i get rid of all this stuff before I die. An my grandmas barn doors an our staircases. What a mess!
