Making a Knife from Wrought Iron Wagon Wheels: Recycling History - Knife Making (Wootz Ep. 5)

- We recycle history by turning antique wagon wheels into a heirloom blade. This video shows the whole process from preparing the wrought iron to the finished knife. First, the wagon tire is forged and prepared for melting in the crucible - this is the same process as making wootz. A crucible steel bar is forged from the ingot and then turned into a powerful blade. Finally, everything is put together and you can marvel at the carbide grain structure of the blade.

Damn. Don't let people give you shit about using modern tools they are there to make life a bit simpler. If I hadn't used modern tools I'd still be cutting holes for a Ruger Mark II copy receiver. Forging is it own animal than what I do but shaping metal is an art form that you have made a pleasure to watch.
That grain is beautiful. It's almost like the knife grew. I look at it and see a cut of a tree, but it's steel. Truly incredible.
Seriously, incredible work. The simple lines of the blade, the copper bolster, the handle, the subtle pattern in the steel.. excellent, just excellent. Im sitting finish a glass of whisky and this is so relaxing to watch and yet exciting at the same time. Excellent work.
These videos really are of the highest order. They put professional documentaries to shame.
Magnificent.
From one smith to another, i have to say i love your work, your style and your videos! As for those leaving negative or derisive comments, eh forget them. They haven't had to swing a hand sledge and do all the work to go from bloom to sword, and will never understand just how time consuming and exhausting it really is.
The wood handle came out lovely! The imperfections make the look of the blade, instead of detecting from it.
Thank you very much!
I've watched this a few times now. For more contrast etch to desire and use instant coffee, hot for as long as you desire. Sand with high grit and you'll get an amazing contrast on almost anything etched! Keep up the fantastic work!
I have heard about this but never tried it. How well does it last?
Man, I wish I was a blacksmith. Such a noble profession. You and Michael Cthulhu are my favorite youtube smiths.
then become one
too old.
+An Evolving Ape never too old to achivr your dreams
my economic situation wouldn't allow it. Thanks for the positive words though.
+An Evolving Ape no problem. although you can start at it pretty cheap get a piece of train track and a good hammer a hair dryer and a file basicly all you need. have a nice day
You are a master blade-smith and it shows yet again. Thank you.
Fantastic! I have 3 wagon tires... so far just used for guards & san mai. Thank you for sharing you knowledge.
Fantastic work, your work with European blades is incredible
Absolutely fine with me using modern tools. Great work friend.
Awesome video man, the slow motion looks incredible!
The quench was gorgeous. It was almost as if the "soul" of the blade ignited into life when the flame started up from the oil.
Beautiful knife and video, Niels. Thank you for sharing!
And I agree with what others have said - I don't know any blacksmiths personally, but I do know some folks who do other types of craftsmanship and I don't think there's a single one who would look down on power tools that would improve their work.
What an absolute joy to watch! And what a glorious looking knife!
I get alot of enjoyment from seeing what tools you have in your work shop. awesome work!
I love your narrations and your craftsmanship. Thank you for taking the time to show this process.
Beautiful Beautiful Beautiful knife...AMAZING WORK
I love how you can take something seemingly simple and make it so beautiful.
Beautiful work
Well worth every minute!!!💪🏼🔥🔥🔥👍🏻
I recently scavenged a corroded cart wheel ring. Probably 2/3 of the thickness is remaining in the worst spots so I consider it a very good find for my requirements!
Don't have the workshop infrastructure for crucible steel at this stage but I think I will try my hand at a blister to shear steel route. I really love the idea of being able to bring old metals to new life, "Recycling History" as you put it.
Great video man, look forward to more projects.
the wootz grain pattern is amazing
The production quality of your videos has become very high. A joy to watch :D
I build knives but I don't have the knowledge or ability to use a forge. Your videos and your craftsmanship are great and inspirational. I'll be watching close here and on Facebook.
That was incredibly badass slowmo. Adds a lot to a video.
Also, knife if pure beauty. Great and very enjoyable work, as always.
best knife vids on youtube, I believe. Masterful work.
+chris chrisson glad you like them
Beautiful knife. I also find sharpening and polishing very relaxing.
I was glad to see that the ingot forged well despite all the voids in it.
Beautiful work. The grain structure is very impressive.
your videos are very satisfying
Amazing work and artistry......wonderful to watch !!
The push stick for grinding is a great idea. For some reason I never thought about using one for grinding knives. Great video.
Bravo Niels on your artistic license to do your art in making blades the way you want to do your blades, modern tools or otherwise!
Amazing work once again, Niels. Congrats.
What a beautiful knife.
Your wootz is top notch

Very well explained! Getting ideas for my first project.
Excellent video, your narration is superb!
Very pretty final product
Wonderful and incredible work of art. This example of forgein and blacksmithing it the reflection of someone who loves and have passion for perfection and high quality hand crafted products. I have the dream of forgeing and makeing my own knife and feel like an authentinc blacksmith. Keep the work up and have a great day.
Great stuff Niels! I love what you're doing with the slow motion. Cheers!
Beautiful work Niels! You are great
Superb as always Neils! You don't seem to have had much luck with crucible steel though, but I guess if it was easy, backsmithing wouldn't have been such a guarded skill in ancient times, passed from father to son.
Thank's Neils, I've always loved your videos and every time you upload another I get so excited!
It would be great to see you making more knives, Broken back seax and bowies.
Good job ! Really enjoy the slow motion bits
Great job as always!
Beautiful work!
Very nice simple knife.
It may not be "totally authentic" to use a power hammer but it is still amazing and takes a ton of skill and time. I love your work!
Great knife and awesome skill my friend!
Glad you liked it.
Most ancient modern thing I ever see
Sir all of your work is very inspiring ... Keep up the videos
That is a beautiful knife
Wonderful presentation. I love the dramatic lighting and slow-mo shots.
Haven't seen new video from you in a while. :) But this was well worth the wait!
Cheers from California,
Nathan
Thanks for sharing this great knowledge!
Sir this is one of the best videos on blade smiting I've seen. I been watching blade smiting for many years great job, oh and that is a great looking and functional blade...

Excelente trabajo. Siempre miro tus videos, es mi pasatiempos y me inspiran a seguir explorando. Saludos desde Bs. As.
very very nice knife
People who complain about lack of authenticity when power equipment is used... have probably never done this kind of work by hand. So there.
Excellent
Amazing work...and really high quality video. Thanks!!
I second this motion...
The whole video is very well done (as is the narration), but I wanted to compliment you especially on the color grading and correction. Not too over the top, but just right to bring out the contrast and patterns in a blade. Your videos keep getting better--keep up the good work!
Amazing
You're an amazing craftsman! Great job on the knife and video.
Who dislikes this? Top work.
Super interesting and instructional!
Thank you much!
+F-Knives: Custom Blades And Handles glad you liked it
The slow motion parts were really cool.
beautiful
Great videos man, loving the slow-mos... keep working on them
great work niels, Thanks for taking the time to make these videos, they're all really interesting!
A nice sax. This blade does not need an exposed "full tang". That handle is plenty strong.
VERY VERY NICE
