@@aboz8649 Im actually from the Netherlands haha, but I studied in the US for a while so joined a fraternity. It was one of the best decisions of my life. So yes, definitely enjoyed it. It really depends on which fraternity and chapter youre in tho. Some frats really confirm the asshole stereotypes and are misogynistic, racist and so on. Other fraternities have actual good people who just wanna enjoy their college time and do fun events.

As a fellow European don't you just find it a little strange that university age students organise themselves into these groups which are legitimate organisations? Fair play if they like it, but I couldn't see anyone in the UK being down with that whole idea
@@rowanmelton7643 Oh I think alot of things about greek life are strange haha, but not in a bad way per say. Including the hazing etc. Ofcourse there's plenty of examples in which hazing goes way too far and even kills people, but those are relatively rare occurences if you look at how many people join a fraternity or sorority every year. By the way, in the Netherlands fraternities also exist, and they are very similar to the ones in the US (they are Latin based, rather than greek). I know that Germany has something akin to fraternities as well although I'm told that in Germany they are relatively academically focused. In any case, just a few examples to show that this is part of European culture as well. And especially, the idea of students organizing themselves in legitimate organisations, that happens at literally any university I've been at (6 countries total). Not fraternities per say, but themed organizations that often times operate like companies. And that's for a good reason ofcourse, it's because these organizations have roles that you as member can occupy, and those roles are meant to simulate work life. There's sometimes also a nepotism side to it. in the Netherlands for example, the king and other royalty were all in the same frat, which is a frat known to 'produce' some of the country's elite.
To answer your question, yes I was hazed but it was very mild. The toughest part was actually not knowing what was going to happen, which can be fairly terrifying because you have the newsstories of fatal hazings in the back of your head (and in the US hazing is illegal so it happens in the shadows and you can't do much about it without being a snitch to everyone). I support the practice of hazing, it has a clear function and it performs that function well.
