Caduceus is played so well because Taliesin has so much wisdom himself. Someone else wouldn't be able to play to Cad's absurd wisdom level, but Tal hits it on the head
“I wish for you to find someone who will mourn you when you are gone” might be the most cutting insult I think I’ve ever heard. Tell someone that they’re worthless, incompetent, evil, misguided, a jerk… that many people can handle. But to let them know that they are so unloved that no one will so much as sigh when they finally leave the stage… damn.
Not to mention it works with Caduceus' role, as well as how his words on pain and love cut Trent deeper than any blade could, given what he does to Caduceus as payback later on.
Also, Trent is *explicitly* searching for a path to immortality at this point, as age is catching up with him. Caduceus reminding him of his (relatively) swiftly impending death absolutely strikes a chord on Trent's greatest insecurity.

Not to detract from that absolutely beautiful and bite-sized roast of a truly despicable and irredeemable shit, my personal opinion and favourite part of this moment is that Caduceus mainly said all thus because he knew how intently Caleb would be listening to everything said in that room. His message is so perfect for both of them. A beautiful show of support for Caleb but likely also showing him where and who he would likely be if he had never opened himself up to the Nein.
Caduceus provided guidance for all the Nein in subtle ways, but especially Caleb and Fjord. I feel like he could sense the dark path they were each on, and wanted to steer them back in the right direction.
@@stingerjohnny9951 That talk about destiny is one of my favorites of the whole campaign, closely followed by the interactions Fjord had with Cad that helped him lean to the embrace of the wild mother. I'd go so far to say that it's had a real role in getting me to try to transform my own life and take better care of myself. I didn't know how much I needed to hear it.
Well, it IS a great quote. And Caduceus is right-- while pain can last a good while, it isn't what always moves us because we find something to help us, and that something being love. Looking back on this moment, Trent is extremely good at keeping a poker face. Even before Cad started the actual burn, he was just sternly taking in and analysing what he was saying (because that's what Trent does). But the moment Cad calls him a fool, he freezes. He keeps mostly that same expression, but he stops moving, and that extra tension is super subtle but it's there and you can feel him seething quietly.
I love that each of the members start slowly beaming, one by one, until even Liam, still in character as the boy this man tortured and corrupted, gives a small, but not inconsequential, smile.
This is a good moment that I think Caleb is grateful that he decided to open up to the party and thar risk terrified him but still healed him more. Caleb needed love and with it he moved forward.
Seeing Fjord and Cad's dynamic this campaign has been amazing. You can see Travis hone in sooner than anyone else when Taliesin spoke up, and he was listening so deeply. Nothing feels cooler than when your mentor takes of the kids' gloves around someone intimidating. Respectfully,.
I love how everyone steadily listens to Caduceus while Fjord is smiling the entire time. Fjord knows Caduceus enough to know exactly what's coming. Well done, Taliesin.

In Campaign 1, Percy’s last words to Sylas Briarwood, the man who slaughtered his family and usurped his city, as close as any character (along with Delilah) could be to being Percy’s nemesis, were “Know that when I die, you will bore me”. It’s crazy how good he is at these.
I know! Travis knew it was about to go down from the minute cad opened his mouth. Sam’s smirk slowly growing, Ashley’s confusion until the last line hit, Marishas poker face dropping at the last second to a huge grin, Laura glancing at Travis with a look of amazement, and Liam’s poker face desolving into the faintest smile
Caleb is so tense the whole time thinking Trent is about to punish Caduceus for speaking to him like that, then as soon as Trent leaves he perks up like "Oh shit no one got hurt c:" and it's adorable.
I think almost everyone misses Cad's attempt to defuse the situation immediately after Trent vanishes, and I don't think it gets enough comedic credit with the hot fire he just spat seconds before. *points at his plate* "That was so tasty!"

And on behalf of everybody who's been abused, this is Taliesin's gift to US of telling off one of the most insidious fictional abusers I've ever come across.
"Pain doesn't make people, it's love that makes people. The pain is inconsequential. It's love that saves them." My senior quote, I graduate in three months, and couldn't have gotten through all the struggle and strife if it wasn't for the people I surrounded myself with, the people I chose, to show affection towards, to care for, and to lean on when I needed that love reflected back. Looking back through my schooling years, it's so easy for me to be frustrated with all the ways I was incombatable with the education system, and all the angry tears and unmotivated days. But when I think about why I'm here, why I feel and act and talk and love the way that I do, I'm filled with memories of all those who have cared for me, and all who I have aimed to show that care back. Love makes people. Don't forget to love each other.
Man, he casted a spell beyond our normal limits, he cast a spell above level 9, into the epic spell list. The man even disappeared hes gone, no more trent, any sign of him in the future is the universe putting a fake there just to substitute the MURDER that just happened XD
Bruh not even a level 10 epic spell or a wish spell could bring this man back, hes gone, he no longer EXISTS. the man even disappeared in front ofthem, nothing but a memory XD! he was MURDERED.
This reminds me of a scene from Dragon Ball Z abridged Krillian "Why do you antagonize him like that? You know he can kill you, right?" Tien "At this point its a game. If he gives in, I win, and he knows that."
Came back here because in a video of FCG’s sacrifice, somebody in the comments quoted Caduceus, “Pain doesn’t make people. It’s love that makes people. Pain is inconsequential. It’s love that saves them.”
Trent was hyped up as this big bad evil that pulls the strings behind the scenes. Yet there´s no threat to him. He´s certainly powerful but one can´t help but pity him. What did this man go through to develop this mindset of his? No one will mourn the Trent that he became, but damn if one can´t mourn the Trent he could´ve been.
I don't know which was worse: Cad telling Trent that no-one would mourn him when he was gone, or Cad getting angry with Trent, Astrid, and Eadwulf for burning the temple.
I'd say when Yasha is like, "Should I kill Trent?" Nott is like "Nooooo." Cad is like, "You can." Next ep, he basically says "If Trent even looks at you the wrong way Caleb we will tear him apart."
My party is being forced into having a dinner party by ol' Vecna himself. Now I know what my Warlock will say to him. Thanks for this amazing clip, one of my favorite Cad/Taliesen moments.

It’s love that makes people. The pain is inconsequential. It’s love that saves them. And you would know that, but you have none around you, you said so yourself. You surround yourself with lies and deception, and… I wish for you in the future to find someone who will mourn you when you are gone. > Respectfully. From the mind that brought you: "Help, it's again"
"It's bad-we're running!"
Caduceus: *absolutely wrecks Ikithon verbally with a few sentences, basically scaring him away*
Jester: so you guys want to hang out??
Icky thong summoned them as a power move, little did he know he was inviting his own executioner
It's the respectfully especially at the end....like the whole insult was AMAZING but the respectfully was like the perfect cherry on top. ICONIC
Perfect because we knew he meant every word, including that respectfully. The earnestness and truthfulness make it 10x better
Did Caduceus just tell Trent "Fuck you and all you stand for" in Firbolg?
"Pain doesn't make people, it's love that makes people. The pain is inconsequential. It's love that saves them."
My senior quote, I graduate in three months, and couldn't have gotten through all the struggle and strife if it wasn't for the people I surrounded myself with, the people I chose, to show affection towards, to care for, and to lean on when I needed that love reflected back.
Coming right in!
One corpse for the Grave Cleric!
Mind the gap!
Hey Fjord, i think Trent needs to borrow that fire resistance ring. He just got burned
When the level 13 cleric cast power statement kill.
Man, he casted a spell beyond our normal limits, he cast a spell above level 9, into the epic spell list.
The man even disappeared hes gone, no more trent, any sign of him in the future is the universe putting a fake there just to substitute the MURDER that just happened XD
My favorite line from the entire campaign. Just amazing roleplaying and an amazing character.
The only response to that can be "Ouch."
Followed by an announcer going *K . O .*
I didn't know Taliesin himself had access to Power Word Kill!
Role some psychic damage at least, he just got his ass verbally handed to him
Cad with the nuclear mic drop
Anyone gonna cast Revive on Trent? No?
Hell no.
not strong enough, gotta go top tier for that save.
Bruh not even a level 10 epic spell or a wish spell could bring this man back, hes gone, he no longer EXISTS.
the man even disappeared in front ofthem, nothing but a memory XD!
he was MURDERED.
You heard Cad, nobody is mourning him. XD
I believe unbeknownst to many, this was the most important minute & a half of all of critical role. Thank you caduceus
Caduceus for real said: "Being Trent Ikithon is a weak mind set."
It's one thing to have written this after a long deliberation, but having come up with this in the moment is incredible. Taliesin for the win, always.
Such Wisdom
Still one of the highlights of the compaign for for me. A pretty long verbal component for the 9th level Power Word Kill though
This reminds me of a scene from Dragon Ball Z abridged Krillian "Why do you antagonize him like that? You know he can kill you, right?" Tien "At this point its a game. If he gives in, I win, and he knows that."
Love tallasain speeches there powerful and contain Wisdom!
Taloswine is really wise indeed
How'd that one fanart go? "Respectfully, you're a slimy fucking idiot." And Eodwulf choking on his tea in the background. Just fucking beautiful.
Came back here because in a video of FCG’s sacrifice, somebody in the comments quoted Caduceus, “Pain doesn’t make people. It’s love that makes people. Pain is inconsequential. It’s love that saves them.”
This hits even better after finishing C2
THEY MADE A TSHIRT OF THISSSSSSSSS
“I leave you with the greatest curse of my people, may you learn”
"You guys want to hang out, or something? You wanna grab a drink?"
Trent was hyped up as this big bad evil that pulls the strings behind the scenes.
Yet there´s no threat to him. He´s certainly powerful but one can´t help but pity him. What did this man go through to develop this mindset of his? No one will mourn the Trent that he became, but damn if one can´t mourn the Trent he could´ve been.
bro politely pushes trent down a flight of stairs
"Respectfully"
If one of my players had done that, Idve just picked up as many d6s as my hand could carry and rolled it for psychic damage.
Kudos to Matt!
Caduceus is great! The fact he can just talk calmly and not yell at someone who had innocent people murdered is amazing
I enjoy watching a different person's face every time I watch that and Travis goes on a journey. It's incredible.
I don't know which was worse:
Cad telling Trent that no-one would mourn him when he was gone, or Cad getting angry with Trent, Astrid, and Eadwulf for burning the temple.
Empathise
I'd say when Yasha is like, "Should I kill Trent?" Nott is like "Nooooo." Cad is like, "You can." Next ep, he basically says "If Trent even looks at you the wrong way Caleb we will tear him apart."
Pain builds character, but it's not what makes you who you are.
One of my favorite moments of CR ever. So understated and perfect. Perfectly in character, perfectly acted. Wonderful.
Yes hello, 911? I think I just witnessed a murder.
My party is being forced into having a dinner party by ol' Vecna himself. Now I know what my Warlock will say to him. Thanks for this amazing clip, one of my favorite Cad/Taliesen moments.
I look forward so much to getting to the point in the campaign where Cad shows up. I started watching because I'd seen bits of Nott and Jester, but I keep coming back to clips of Cad.
This is a room of people who have defined themselves by their pain. In true Cleric fashion Caduceus just burned his enemy while also healing his friends.
Watching this now on November 7th, 2020 ❤️
I miss Cad so much...
"Respectfully."
BALLER!!!
I didn't know grave clerics could cast Power Word Kill.
I mean he does grow trees
Best Caduceus scene EVER.
Not even Lucien would be safe from such a amount of raw psychic damage
Cad with the room silencing mic drop
> May I say, before you go… I think perhaps you are one of the most powerful mages that I’ve ever had the pleasure to be in the presence of, and for this I would offer a gift, which I think it has been a long time since anyone has pointed out to you that you’re a fool.
> Pain doesn’t make people. It’s love that makes people. The pain is inconsequential. It’s love that saves them. And you would know that, but you have none around you, you said so yourself. You surround yourself with lies and deception, and… I wish for you in the future to find someone who will mourn you when you are gone.
> Respectfully.
In case people want to try the line yourself or just as a quote
You don’t need vitriol to prove a foul man wrong. All you need is pity.
