I have no idea what she sounds like now, but I'd be willing to put money down that it's pretty much exactly the same; whereas most singers push their voices or hit certain high notes or whatever, her style of singing seems like it would require the least amount of effort and she could do it that way for the rest of her life.

My best friend and I scrimp and saved ever last dollar to see Suzanne at the Auckland town hall when we were 15, so that's like 96, it was the last gig on her world tour, we hitched hiked there, lol , she was so amazing, and the band was just awesome, same guys in the video I'm pretty sure, were both musos, although my mate Lyle isn't with us today, :( but thank you Suzanne for the amazing music
Hello and Greetings from a Kiwi , currently still living in Auckland. Interestingly , the first concert I ever attended , aged 14 was also @ The Town Hall in the CBD where I saw the band America ( Horse with no name? Ventura Highway? Remember them?) Anyway , God Bless you , my fellow countryman...
Her music has it all, nice jazzy feel you can dance to, her lyrics are pure poetry, and her completely unique voice that glides along on top of the song.
My friend could really relate to this beautiful song. She was inspired by it, and felt a sense of belonging when she listened to it, and felt empowered to be herself. She died aged 23 last week due to a diabetic shock, and while mourning her, this song brings back memories and experiences. I hope others are inspired by this song as she was.
From Singin' in the Rain to Pretty in Pink and this song. That's interesting. I notice you posted your comment fairly recently but before Debbie Reynolds died. It's now coming up on two weeks since she and Carrie Fisher passed as I type this. Singin' in the Rain has been on many people's minds again.
You Nailed it!....."Freakishly contemporary sounding" is a spot-on way of describing this sound and song! Rightttt??? I thought this was new. I heard on ktxy today. A local listener supported radio station that I like to drive to. It brought me here. Great song. Where is she now?
I think this was the first song I ever heard by Suzanne Vega on the radio way back in 1986. I loved her vocals, and have been a fan of hers ever since. I've even seen her Live twice. Once in 2005 and again in 2010. Both great evenings.
This song stands the test of time for sure. After 30 years, it looks as fresh as when it came out. Suzanne Vega and Joe Jackson created a masterpiece together.
Suzanne Vega is a truly gifted singer/song writer who masterfully captured all of the depth, alternative spaces, and freedom of spirit & expression that existed for so many of us that were teens in the 1980s. And her music has stood the test of time ❤

Such a simple song but it got stuck in my mind, and it took me years to realise what she meant, not just to the left but also having been left, and not just of center but also off center. It's poetic, and I guess you've to live through it to get it.
She’s great, but in my opinion Karen Carpenter, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Maria Callas, Dolly Parton, Bessie Smith and Emmylou Harris may be better.

My favorite thing about Suzanne is how effortless her singing is.
@Da Co can you just sing only one song of her? she is not talking" she is singing in her own style.
Yes, like Paul Simon she always sounds like a child singing...
Totally

I find your claim difficult to argue with. Her voice is most soothing
She is in her 60s now. I'm 59. Still haven't encountered an artist or woman quite like Suzanne Vega. Singular. Eerie voice. The 80s encapsulated.
Agreed still one of my favorite❤🎉
Seen her live las year, small venue just accompanied by one dude on guitar. sublime!
I'm a metal-head (thrash and death metal) and I still think she kicks ass. I miss being a kid in the 80s. Such a special time.

Same. I love this song so much. I can never hear it without feeling 16 again. I'm 54 now. Feeling nostalgic lately.

Suzanne is delightfully peculiar. i love how she turns moments into full and detailed stories, set to music.
Not really peculiar. Just her writing style.

If you want me
You can find me
Left of center
Off of the strip
In the outskirts
In the fringes
In the corner
Out of the grip
When they ask me
"What are you looking at?"
I always answer
"Nothing much" (not much)
I think they know that
I'm looking at them
I think they think
I must be out of touch
But I'm only
In the outskirts
And in the fringes
On the edge
And off the avenue
And if you want me
You can find me
Left of center
Wondering about you
I think that somehow
Somewhere inside of us
We must be similar
If not the same
So I continue
To be wanting you
Left of center
Against the grain
If you want me
You can find me
Left of center
Off of the strip
In the outskirts
In the fringes
In the corner
Out of the grip
When they ask me
"What are you looking at?"
I always answer
"Nothing much" (not much)
I think they know that

But I'm only
In the outskirts
And in the fringes
On the edge
And off the avenue
And if you want me
You can find me

Wondering about you

Do you mean the sound quality? Most pop recordings from the 80s were better quality than the ones now.
it was recorded on a high quality tape machine which is still higher fidelity than todays digital recording tech, not surprising
