  • The Tern GSD doesn't have to be just a dad bike. This video explains why a typical GSD configuration isn't the perfect fit for single people and which accessories (fewer than you'd expect) are actually necessary for a non-parent GSD.

    Great video, I echo the same recommendations you made and also recommend the HSD cargo 37 panniers as an alternative - they have plenty of space and don’t obstruct the foot pegs.

      @@kandimba I have a couple sets of Ortliebs as well. I think because of the GSDs rectangular tubing I couldn’t get them to fit. Maybe I was being impatient though? I assume you have, but don’t use them too? I definitely took them bike camping once but I had to use a bungee to keep them on.

      @@batterybikes That sucks. I'm looking to get a GSD but I'd really prefer sticking with ortlieb as they're super easy to take off and they just seem better than the ones sold by tern, which are also more expensive.

    The back stand looks like it was intended for people with dense urban space limitations. I can imagine wiggling it into a closet, corner of a garage, foyer, behind an open door, third bike under a staircase, fitting into a short elevator, etc. This position might also make locking to some objects like pipes and rails more accessible. Thanks for the gear rundown.

    • @batterybikes
      @batterybikes  Před 3 lety +1

      Yeah true. I think for me I'd need some type of retaining strap against the wall before I'd let it stand. It's a cool idea I just haven't gotten much use out of it, but I'm always trying to one-wheel it out of the basement and it gets in the way. Thanks for watching man.

      Hey thanks. Yeah if I was looking now I might do the same. I wish Tern made an HSD with a straight fork and a Bafang setup to be a bit cheaper. What fun. I switched from a big rolling desk to this hideaway in what used to just be shelves. They're perfect

    Thank you for that video. I have used Arkel Panniers for years especially there shopping bag. You confirmed for me that I should just get extra Arkel Panniers but in 15mm-21mm clamps. Loved the use of pics and putting the cut outs into categories. Thanks.

      Hey thanks Ashley. I had never heard of Arkel before, but those look great. I have a bunch of Ortliebs sitting around, but I couldn't get them to fit. I think it is a clamp issue but I got too frustrated to figure it out and now just keep one dumb GSD pannier on all the time. It's almost always enough space for my errands.

    Been considering a GSD. This is a really helpful video. Good to know about details like the annoying Velcro on the panniers, and the vertical stand issue. Which seemed like a dangerous gimmick to me. Unless one really needed to store the bike that way and one had some form of top anchor/support.

      Hey kind of an old video but thanks for watching David. I do actually use the vertical stand a lot, but it still drives me nuts every time I have to get it over a curb or little bump. My storage unit has many and it's a pain. I'm going to get a lighter and more svelte second bike for when I'm not riding with my wife.

    I agree with all the ideas and comments in the video. The bike Tern HSD is great and well thought through. Not so fo the asseccories. They need to be made so you can take them off and put them on without tools. This can be achieved for the short tray, the 37 Panniers, and the front rack. Can I send the pictures to anyone?

    • @batterybikes
      @batterybikes  Před 3 lety

      Hey Hans thanks much. I think Tern is one of the best for accessories, if you compare them to something like Rad or other online-only places that just sell off the shelf stuff, but they definitely have room for improvement. • @batterybikes

    Would you get the new folding platforms

    • @batterybikes
      @batterybikes  Před 2 lety +1

      The perspective I have on my GSD is that I basically want a stealth cargobike. Most of the time, 90%, I just want it to behave like a normal bike. The last 10% when I have another passenger, usually my wife, I'm fine if it's not quite as luxurious. So I'm sure the folding platforms make make carrying more gear or people a little more luxurious, but I just do that so in-often that it's not worth it for me.

  • @kilastrika
    @kilastrika Před rokem +1

    why would they use velcros! so dumb. My bontrager bags have these clip quick connect things and ive never had an issue.
    my rear pegs are really a show piece. Ive found ways to store it under an outdoor stairwell with the ABUS sound lock and if you were to even touch the bike it rattles the lock and sounds the alarm.
    Although... One of my pegs fell out from all the friction and use. They are cheap lil plastic plugs.
    A lot of the bike can be disappointing with how much you spend on it.

    another reason to get a family, now go tell a lovely lady that you have a cargo bike tailored towards a family and tell them that you are lacking one and needs a wife and preferably 2 kids to fully utilise the cargo bike, ask if she's in and happy to have kids to fill up some space on the bike, voila, you have a justified reason for having a beautifully built cargo bike. Tern should advertise even in the Family planning sector, advocating for having families and having 1 to 2 kids, and even link up marriage consultancies and introduce single parents to customers as an optional feature that comes with Tern bikes!

      Ridiculous comment. Someone can't meet someone just through lack of luck. And not everyone wanting a family can have them! I was happy to see this video because it's so triggering as someone with childlessness grief to CONSTANTLY see these bikes referred to as family bikes as though everyone has a family. But here is the idiot again assuming everyone lives the same life. Not everyone is so lucky and why constantly make people feel bad for not being able to have what you have? Also, not everyone even WANTS a family or is meant to have one. I bet you're some Bible bashing American who just has no idea how to think outside of the box and thinks there's only one way to live. There isn't.
