  • We take on German Schmearing our own personal brick fireplace. After remodeling the entire house the chimney was the only remaining part of the house left untouched. We contemplated many other ideas that were considerably more work but our main goal was to brighten the room. I very pleased we went this route with the German Schmear and the effect that its had on the room are great. The chimney use to stand out and now it blends into the room.

      The more around this chimney with the German Schmear the more I like it.

    When you mess up on the design, just blast the whole thing white, call it German Shmear!

    Good point on the sealer. Is “enhanced” in the name?

    What kind of cement would you use for an old brick wall outside? If you didn't want it to deteriorate further.

    Did you seal the brick first? If not did it yellow after time?

    FYI, fold the top over like a cuff and it makes it easier to fill and the top isn't as messy.

      Thanks for the tip. That makes perfect sense.

      If you fold it over a small bucket, it makes it easier to fill and shake air out - at least that works with icing piping bags.

    Mortar to water ratio? Is it like icing? What is slake?

    Would I be able to do it if the fireplace has been already painted white and I painted brown and then do the smear technique???

      I don’t think I’d advise going over painted surface.

      A lot of people are not understanding the advantages of this being a mortar product and the strength and longevity this offers over other methods. Glad it’s helping you.

      If the thin set is mixed to very light consistency which it should be then yes I believe it would work.

    Why not just paint it?

    • @sinister2055

      I think they let it sit too long. Really had no other choice than to go solid. Opaque or more translucent look wouldve been 🔥. U have to wipe it off quick or otherwise it sets and is difficult to remove. 😊

    @bentramer4281 Před 2 lety +10

    You might as well have painted it white. 🤦

      Lol right? This is not German smear 😂 it’s just painted brick basically

    • @ryanvillane9357

      Nope, this makes the mortar joints less pronounced and makes for a more modern appearance. It’s not exactly a typical German smear look, but the technique used is as such. Looks good man!

      @campbellbuilt  Před rokem +1

      You are exactly right about the joints not standing out as much with this process.That’s the main reason I was doing it. Appreciate the comment.

    I don’t like the way that looks at all. I don’t know what you’re trying to achieve, but couldn’t you have just painted it white?

      With this being thin set a person can use muriatic acid even after its cured to remove more if you want to. Just be careful and use rubber gloves, glasses and well ventilation.
