Rush The Necromancer is ByTor part 2
I had a friend that first time he heard this he called it the rock n roll boogie woogie monster lmao
2112... You have to listen too the whole album it's one storyline
2112.... Is is All one storyline
Listen too the words to the whole album , it's One story
A true deep track. This song is based on the manager's dogs, a German Shepard with a bad attitude (Biter - By Tor), that bit at everyone and its little white dog companion, dubbed Snow Dog. Apparently the road manager suggested it. The instrumental battle by the guitar and the bass was meant to represent the battle between the two dogs.
Thanks for some great information from a 70’s rock & roller!
I do think by extension that Geddy on bass is By-Tor and Alex is the Snow Dog.
@@mikebell2112 Indeed, that would make sense. Bigger dog will have a deeper 'bark.'
By-Tor makes another appearance in their following album in the song “the necromancer”
He views all his lands and is already aware
Of the three helpless invaders trapped in his lair 😉
Yes, but he’s the good guy in that song.
It makes me so happy when I see younger people, such as yourself Tim, enjoy and appreciate what RUSH has done for music. The trio are truly musical magicians.
They recorded this in December of 74. Neil was in the band only 5 months. Yet they sound symphonic already. They were 21/22 in ages. This song showed the potential how great they would become and much the direction they were heading
Alex was 19.
@@johncalvo1743 not for Fly By Night. Alex is 21, Geddy 21 and Neil 22 at this point in Dec of 74. Alex was born in Aug of 53. Geddy July of 53. And Neil Sep of 52
@@scottshields113 My bad. I thought Alex was born in '55 for some reason. You can't argue with math.
@@johncalvo1743 lol no the numbers don't lie. But still only being 21 at Fly By Night stage is still remarkable how good they were playing together already
When I listen to RUSH I'm like "People! Please be quiet. I'm listening to RUSH!" LOL!
for me its "When I listen to Rush so do my neighbours" haha
@@LyonHall1 I love it!
So true
Fantastic! Truly, the All The World’s A Stage performance is the definitive version. Alex is everything in that version. Mind blowing guitar power by “The Snow Dog.”
Tim, you would LOVE their final studio album CLOCKWORK ANGELS.....an album that is super heavy and a concept album from song 1 through the end. The entire album follows a young man through his life journey to death. The death song ( The Garden) is sacred.
I wonder if Neil knew he had brain cancer while writing this album because it sure sounds like he is reflecting on his life and the end of life. It would explain why he never picked up a drumstick again (according to Geddy) after that tour was over
Wow. You're really going old-school here. The first album all three played together on. And By-Tor was when they first started experimenting with multi-part prog songs. This really is when they were discovering themselves. Hey, you should toss in some of their newer stuff too. Some of Alex's later guitarwork is wonderfuly full and rich. He goes for less shredding and more layering. Songs like "We Hold On" and "Force Ten" ... it's incredibly fun hearing him alternate between melody, rhythm, and lead in the same bars.
Honestly, this was the first song where they REALLY stretched their legs and was the precursor to all the epics to come (2112, Cygnus X-1, Xanadu, Natural Science, Camera Eye....the list goes on and on). I feel incredibly privileged to have found this band when I was 12 and have been a fan for 40+ years now. Changed my life.
There will never be another Neil Peart, or, another Rush. Thank the gods they left us with such a huge catalog of AMAZING music!
Man I'm 22 and me and the wife love rush , their amazing musicians, alex is ridiculous on the guitar crazy , geddy wow ,bass ,vocals and keyboard , then peart RIP the best drummer ever. I think all 3 are the best ...
The song is about the producer's two dogs: a German Shepherd nicknamed By-tor (biter) and a poodle nicknamed Snowdog - the song is about the two dogs playing in the snow. You can hear a representation of the Shepherd growling and the poodle yipping - it is hilarious.
I love how the drums are always so busy in their songs... Most bands would never even think of adding little fills and rolls in between phrases like he does...
I saw an interview where Neil stated the fills he puts in are often to account for the odd time signatures and time signature changes they employ, in order to smooth the transitions out. I'd say it worked!
Let's not forget that these guys were 21 and 22 years old when they wrote and recorded this classic.
Wait until you hear how accurate they are with this song live on ATWAS!
If you haven't already you need to listen to the live version on all the world's a stage album. It will blow your socks off.
And another new Rush fan is born. I'm almost jealous because you get to hear it all for the first time. Being blown away by Rush for the first time happened a long time ago for me. You are like a child at Christmas and as your parent I can experience your joy vicariously. Keep going, I would love to see you react to Headlong Flight, Driven, and if you haven't yet 2112. Be safe and godspeed.
Let the fray begin..........
Amazing!! RUSH RULES!!!
I know it's a long song, but 2112 is the quintessential RUSH song. 🙂🎶🎸🥁🎸🎶🔥
Love 2112 but it's so overrated, cygnus x1 - both parts, la villa strangiato, xanadu, natural science even subdivisions are superior in my opinion
The greatest rock band of all time!
Love this reaction, the fact it has 453 likes and 0 dislikes should speak volumes to you.
Oh man, I was sure hoping to hear By-Tor and the Snow Dog live on All the World's a Stage. There is nothing else like it. It sure surprised me the first time I heard ATWAS which was only a few weeks from seeing them for their 2112 / ATWAS tour. Love every minute of it. I was hoping you would play it because I wanted so bad to see your reaction. Oh well, maybe another time. Of course, nothing wrong with the studio version. I think you would see what I mean when you hear it. RUSH FOREVER ROCKS!! Thanks for keeping things going. You picked the best band to do this type of reaction venue on. I love watching your expression when I know things are about to get crazy or even mellow. Rush changes things up so much, it's like getting a box of chocolates!
While you journey the caress of steel, the fountain of lamneth is an absolute treasure
my favourite song of all time, ahead of easy by the commodores and here, there and everywhere by the beatles.
back in 1982 my friend mike let me listen to this album on his sony walkman. headphones. you need headphones. it was that roll down the toms at 5:56 that first made me a neil peart fan, and i've never looked back.
Imagine if you will an easier time. I'm sure way before your time. Ask your mom and dad. It's 1976 I'm in the basement of my friend Dan's house. He says "Joel you have got to hear this". He puts an ALBUM on the TURN TABLE. It's this song. I was blown away. Been a fan every since. You are hearing a battle. Alex is The Snow dog, Geddy is BY-tor.
Absolutely love that album I'm a rush fan because of my mother December 25th 1975 I was 14 And my mother bought me a album for Christmas when I opened it up I had never heard of rush till that point had that big owl on the Cover I ask my mother why she bought that particular album she said it was because of the owl because she loved owls So I took it in my bedroom put it on the stereo put the headphones on and cranked it up been a rush fan ever since thanks to my mother she just recently passed on the 29th of December 2021 And mom if you run into Neil Peart on the other side tell him this story I think he would like it rest in peace mom Love you.
It takes a special kind of creativity to watch 2 dogs fight, then come up with By-tor and the Snowdog. Or maybe it was the weed. 🤪
You can hear one of the Earliest versions of the riffs in this song on the 1974 At the Agora live recording. It was part of a riff they put in Working Man recording. You can find it :)
An early Rush mini epic, one of my favorites! Such abilkity to conjure magic. Will always remember discovering , reading Tolkien and listening to this/Rush waaaay back as a kid in the late 70's.
I don't think anybody commented this yet, but if you check the original liner in the Fly by Night CD or vinyl, you can learn that By-Tor is actually played by Geddy and Snowdog by Alex
You and other young people reacting to this incredibly influential band. Alex was a huge influence on joe and all newer musicians and bands. Rush and the trio within will show relevance and superior musicianship for thousands of years.
if you're into their earlier stuff, then it's time for The Necromancer
You would be doing yourself a favor by watching the live version from the Exit Stage Left concert. This is one of my favorite songs by Rush.
The added presence of Neil on their second album enabled Geddy and Alex to stretch their wings. You can hear it on this album and especially in this song. With the three of them, they became Rush.
I agree with hess, the Necromancer is a deep must listen, also the fountain of lamneth is a masterpiece
Great Reaction, Tim!! This is actually about 2 dogs their manager had! A German shepherd who bit everyone (By-Tor) and a little white dog, (Snowdog) Neil was reading some kind of Tolkien novel, or something like it at the time, and he wrote this little story! They have all said they thought they were pretty “wasted” when they wrote this., you’d never know it, huh!! You should check out the live version of this from “Exit Stage Left”, it’s only 1/2 the song but great to watch them do it live) the live version from “Live in Rio” is really good too!! Been looking forward to you doing this one!! It’s a banger! Now just waiting for “2112”!
AOR was a big part of my youth. WHFS in Washington D.C.
I think By-tor and the Necromancer are very underrated tracks esp by Rush fans who maybe focus on their later work
Alex's solo on By-tor ( where snow dog is 'howling' in victory) is one of my very favourites
You will grow into a lot of rush Albums... Its just a Natural progression. Enjoy the journey man.. Paul from Liverpool Uk.
Dude you talked right over one of Neil’s mini solos at the 5:20 mark. 🙁 Love the drumming in By-Tor.
Thanks for another nice Rush reaction!
Of course, you've got to listen to "The Necromancer" now.
this is my favourite song of all time, ahead of Easy by the commodores and Here, There and Everywhere by the beatles.
So glad you're continuing to explore Rush. You owe it to yourself to listen to the radio broadcast version from St. Louis in 1980 (Permanent Waves tour). It's a bit abbreviated from the original, but the playing is just incredible - much more aggressive. In fact, the whole show is awesome. It's my favorite bootleg, by far (particularly the version of 2112 and the medley with the drum solo). But please start here since you're in a By-Tor mood: czcams.com/video/79Z6qav4GXE/video.html - I know you will love it!
I really think you should check out “Working Man- Live in Cleveland” and really watch Alex shred it live!! And “2112” LOL!!
I would be very interested in your reaction to Rush’s “Nobody’s Hero,” off of one of their most powerful albums, “Counterparts.” If you watch the official video it will pull you into the lyrics, though I don’t know if you can use that version for your public reaction.
As Rush songs go, “Nobody’s Hero” is short but it certainly makes a serious point. The “Counterparts” album as a whole is a well of meaning and a stripped down version of the Rush sound. One of my top three Rush discs.
By-Tor isn't evil. He's just misunderstood! ;-)
Check out the 1981 live version. Neil twirls the sticks from one side to the other.
Seen many variations of this “ battle” with Geddy and Lifeson trying to trip each other up on stage ,laughing it up,with Peart looking on shaking his head but joining in the fun. All with different backdrops ranging from ancient warriors to anime to Vultron type warriors fighting on screen . A huge highlight during their performances .
Hello, cool reaction. Now that you've heard the studio version, you should really -- by that I mean you HAVE TO -- listen to the live version from 1976's live album, "All the World's a Stage". What you just heard from the studio version is a trip and it rocks, no doubt. But, the live version is BT&SD ON STEROIDS!! It is nothing short of monster!! It's ripping beyond belief and Alex's space-rock experimentations in the middle of the song is truly epic! Check it out!!
Rush is Rush. The best!!!
Mannn check out La Villa Strangiatto. It has Alex best guitar solo!
He did about a month ago
This tune and The Necromancer off of Caress of Steel have always been two of my favorite early Rush tunes.
You get it. You get their music. They lyrics and music carry your imagination away. Love this band. Thanks for another good reaction. They were just finding their sound on this one. Neils first album with the band. You can hear where they’re going but they’re not there yet.
I like the live version of this song from Exit Stage Left. Geddy goes into a killer bass solo while Alex is also soloing
“Enter the champion ..Prince By Tor appears to battle for freedom from chains of long years”.....somehow he evolved into Royalty...and a good guy maybe after the epic battle with snow dog ...he evolved to a higher level of consciousness.....like Gandalf did .....yea Necromancer next. ...would be perfect
You really need to do the live version from All The Worlds A Stage. It'll just blow you away. Keep em coming. From a big fan in the UK. KEEP EM COMING, MI OWD MUCKA.
You should watch EXIT STAGE LEFT - the "battle" between Geddy and Alex is great
Fly By Night, Spirit of Radio, and 2112 A side are phenomenal; check them out
They are battling
I was going to say, you always have to follow this up with the Necromancer from Caress of Steel
The drum breaks in this song are absolutely epic. Neil Peart's early sound, with the Slingerland drums ultra muffled, was bad ass before he switched to Tama. Seemed to fit his super tight and precise playing style. I remember slowing down the LP to try to figure out exactly how he played these fills.
Time for "The Necromancer" from Caress of Steel by Rush. Another epic jem.
and fountain of lamneth
I love the layering of guitars in this song, that and the storytelling - painting pictures with music, something Rush excelled at. Keep going on your Rush journey - still tons more genius stuff to come :-)
Love the choice,so now you need to do the necromancer off of caress of steel.lets make this happen.
Should've done the LIVE "All the World's a Stage" version, instead.
You rock
So many neglected classics in the Rush back catalogue. Even the first album, before Neil joined, is full of great songs.
Please you have to checkout Cygnus X-1 also The Analog Kid and Losing It. Camera Eye, god there’s so many great songs.
Years before Joe or Eric. Alex is the man. Just ask EVH.
EVH was once asked what it's like being the best guitarist on Earth. His reply was, " I don't know, ask Alex Lifeson."
Speaking of Rush.have you done any Budgie (70s Welsh heavy metal Pioneers!) ? they have incredible guitar work .especially Breadfan,Napoleon Bona pt1 and I Turned to stone..just throwing it out there!
Awesome epic rush, the stuff is the battle as you mentioned, check out the Necromancer, by tor is the good guy. Here's an easter egg, for thi s tune, the breaks before the slow part, you yell by...tor...and...the...snow...dog , check it out
Check out by-tor medley live
If you have any interest in their songs from the 90's, I highly recommend:
Presto
Available Light
Ghost of A Chance
Cut To The Chase
Leave That Thing Alone (Instrumental)
Driven
Time And Motion
Wow! Now By-Tor, You are really hitting the heart, of RUSH core Rawness. I can see why some may think you have already heard, these songs. It is ONLY because you are picking the best songs, that are not played too often, EVEN back then, in the 70's. So go easy , on those. For the Haters, just leave. Letting younger people enjoy ANY music, is how the music stays ALIVE, DIP****! After reading this Find yourself a copy of "ALL THE WORLDS A STAGE"! Don't Think, just Do. The TRUE Power, of early RUSH, is why they could not sustain, this level, of intensity, throughout their 40 year career. They are Working Hard, in these early years. Most bands, before they make it, often do their best, during this time. My preferred years (74-81), they were simply on fire and most represent their "Rock" years. I fell off a little during the later stuff. My Dude, Put on your best Headphones, get in the most relaxed, state, of mind, of your choice, and listen to All the Worlds a Stage, JUST DO!
I appreciate the reaction but I always wonder why people compare them to this or that. Satriani, Johnson, Pink Floyd I've even heard people say Dream theater.
3 of these weren't even around when they made this. Pink Floyd perhaps but they play much more sparsely.
I never hear people saying this band or that player sound like Rush. Probably cause no one does! No disrespect everybody hears things differently. Just an observation.
In part two I expanded on that thought and said "if anything I'm hearing Rush in Joe Satriani because they were obviously around way before he was".
I think I'm just comparing it to what I know and recognize. But yes, as far as most of those guys/bands go Rush was actually the influence.
Thanks for the comment 🤘
Glenn Ritter I couldn't agree more. When I reveal the depth of my love of Rush, people tend to say they've either (a) never heard of them or (b) oh, they're prog rock or sound like Yes. No, they sound like Rush and their sound over the decades cannot be pigeonholed. For me, Neil, Geddy and Alex were and are peerless.
Sorry but no one sounds like Rush. They are the quintessential Gods of Rock, no one comes close.
You have got to listen to some Snarky Puppy. I recommend the video of Outlier, it’s like prog rock and jazz smashed together.
Kick Ass, Man!!!
Forgot how long the studio version is as they abridge for the live set and have done this abridged version so many times I actually was listening to the mid to end section anew all over again and agree Pink floyd influence for sure
The intro drum fill is enough to make you go WTF?
This is another one of Alex Lifeson sounds that I believe was stolen and borrowed from him that he invented the soundness dramatic echoey effect I don’t think Pink Floyd really had that sound up until about 1975 as well but rush was already doing this stuff on their first album
You need to listen to the live version on All the World a Stage
Check out the Necromacer brother.By Tor makes a appearance in it
Just out of curiosity, what do you have to say about (or, what is your opinion of) Alex Lifeson’s “chord vocabulary?”
(Note: “Fly By Night” is the first Rush album to have Neil Peart as the lyricist.)
I saw Bowie three times, Gabriel twice. I saw Pink Floyd at their best in Ohio State Stadium. I've seen the Doobie Brothers and the Grateful Dead. I've seen Rush a couple times and Genesis. David Bowie was the best.
You said Pink Floyd...I immediately thought Jimi Hendrix.
Listen to live version from All The World's A Stage.
Watch the live ESL version
I thought you're guitar work on the Judas Priest cover was very excellent.
Rush influenced Pink Floyd and Satrianni (and Dream Theater) with this stuff.
Dont forget man, Only 19,20 on this.
Alex was 19! LOL.
epic @ 7.47
Do a review of my second favorite band after Rush, Genesis (the keyboard version of Rush). I suggest The Cage (live version) with Phil C.
Wonder if we can get The Warning to have a go at this, after all they nailed the Foo Fighters and Metallica...
I seriously only listen to the live versions I have of this song. LOL he gets out! The song is not as melodic as others, but it is so RUSH.
He gets it! not he gets out lol Tim you are awesome!
2112
Now if I hear you do the "Caress of Steel album, I will be suspect. Very Deep Unbelievably Good!! I dare Ya!! Didacts and Narpets.Narpets, find out what the meaning is and you will be surprised, my friend.
I wonder if Eric Johnson was born when this was made
Anthem is another great song off the album, as well as anything else. Rush didn't make many 'bad' songs.
