It might just be a sampler, but the controls of it are actually pretty intuitive. Kinda the same way how we don't actually need keyboards to input MIDI, but we use them anyway since it's easier with a physical instrument
While yeah it's a sampler, it's still technically synthesis because it's doing granular synthesis
@@BlankRevA lot of people don't know how radically different the product of Granular can be, so they usually just dismiss it as Sampling
Sampling is technically just wavetable synthesis (with a long wavetable) and granular synthesis is fancier wavetable synthesis.@@BlankRev
PS - nice job guys - makes granular synthesis very intuitive and kinetic!
I've been doing sampling like that for years. This one just has a pretty screen.
and an Arpeggiator.
It does tho
Um...its not even in 4k
I like the slider for positioning in the sample that is cool.

Underrated
That's so good
Lol nice reference, considering the music starting on 1:26 sounds like it could be on Portal too lol
Most of you dont get it. The fact this makes sampling so 'Visually massive' in scale, is the damn point. Just look how meticulous you can be with sampling. And the controls are just so smooth and specialized for sampling. ITs just beautiful.
I'd love one 😍

The workflow with a slider and turnable knob is brilliant! The design for two performers is just down right beautiful!!!
+Arrayzable It is brilliant and well achieved.
Everybody’s talking shit like if they didn’t own one of these they wouldn’t play with it all the time. Yes we can do this in software, that’s not the point.
Legit, thinkin the same thing. You don't pay for the software you pay for the experience
Not to mention that most people commenting somehow leave out that their DAW costs a trivial $600 before mentioning a $20 plugin. I suspect a fair number of pirates in here too.
People don’t understand the power of hardware based workflows. Sure digital work spaces can be incredibly useful and flexible but real art is made through approaching your limitations and exploring what’s possible with different tools. You can mimic a vhs look in post processing but recording and capturing from a vhs camera will just be overall more authentic. Plus hardware based workflows are much more responsive in my opinion
@@picketf I do this same thing in OpenMPT... which cost me $0

This is excellent! i have only just really started playing with granular synths in recent months and i have to say i am loving it. Its quickly becoming my favourite method of synthesis.
It's more of a sampler than a synthesizer right? :-D
In a way. It's called granular synthesis. Your using the same tools and features you would find in synthesizers, but instead of wave tables, you're using samples. Just think of it as sampling, but with more processing.
@games and guacamole except that it isnt, the samples are being recorded, not generated.
lol those samples aren't synthesized......
Yep, @Duey Tait Pastor explained it the best... A sampler but with much more processing. Probably how a digital synthesizer works, except the sources wouldn't be oscillators but would be the sample that has been recorded.

A: No. The buffer object is typically unmodifiable once it's attached to a

you can do everything with daw, but thats never an arguement :|

To all the people, writing "You can do that in a DAW!": Yeah, sure, but why use a DAW, when you can write down the bytes of your mp3 with notepad?
Yeah! Why use your DAW when you can spend retarded amounts of money on something your DAW can already do!

Electro Cow nah its still cool as shit
@@ghostofpop its still a sampler and synthesizer how is that useless
I wouldn't say that it's useless, but why spent money on it when you can achieve just the same with free software?
The one situation that I see it being useful is in a live performance. Apart from that, it's not really worth an investment.
It's just a mix of a Sampler and a Granulizer. Only it is a lot more Fancy and Expensive.
0:12 that is just someone beaming up the Enterprise.
probably the coolest interface for a granular synth I've ever seen
Wtf is with the crazy negative comments lol
Cause it’s easier to perpetuate negativity and pick out flaws than just compliment something especially behind a screen. Is this anything ground breaking, no, but it’s a cool project
Kevin Shiflett the negativity comes from the hype of this machine just being a sampler but it’s cool as shit and people need to shut the fuck up, not everything has to be a groundbreaking piece of technology
@@scrums4748 Some waldorf synths cost $4000+ and they are "just" pretty synths that sound nice. This machine is a groundbreaking piece of technology it combines the work of an interaction design research specialist with software developer that specializes in real-time audio, it is well documented and it is FREE.
I suppose the free part is what irks most people. If this was a commercial product you'd have 2 groups of people the ones buying and the others really jelly, secretly wanting to own one but not being able to afford it. But since it's a very well documented project (even the 3D model of the case is included) anyone could just make it if they wanted to, but probably no one ever will, which put's everyone watching this video in group 1. Jelly as jelly can be, forever longing for one but inept to recreate it.
@@picketf how is this groundbreaking its just put together well
@@scrums4748 because it preceeds research in a number of areas. Yamaha or Roland have an in house R&D team that occasionally make small increments to whatever instrument they are working on but they don't combine multiple research into one project (because that would be counterproductive from a financial perspective). Since this isn't a commercial product and all the software used is offered as GPL it's at a pretty optimized, largely bug free and not-much-can-be-improved state, also unheard of for today's standards. The groundbreaking part is combining interaction design with highly advanced real-time processing. In audio engineering it's pretty common to have advanced real-time tools that are highly complex but lack a comprehensive UI or even a well documented layer interface (if it is developed as a plugin) and really neat and minimalistic UI designs rarely ever have a complex underlying engine.

1:50 thats amazing sounding.
Endless posibilities to dive into, holy... impressive.
I am a software engineer. However: when making music, I like to avoid having to use software at all costs, because I lose track of what I want to create while being busy figuring out the right thing to click on or the right plugin or VST to install. Tired of that!
My set up currently just includes a Zoom R16, a MOX6 and a Roland RD2000 and a pair of nice studio speakers.
So an instrument such as this one might indeed be interesting, since there's not much software involved - in particular nothing, that requires me to deal with MacOS, Windows or the likes.
Hence: nice instrument, even though it is just a sampler. Good work!
The start of that tune at 1:26 I wish I had MORE !!!!!!!!!!! GIVE ME MOREEE BABY !!!
GENIUS! I'll never understand how the British used to have cars that caught on fire (Jags, others) because of faulty electronics, but then turn around and consistently design some of the world's best synthesizers. Too bad this thing isn't a commercial product.
I'm Impressed
I'm impressed too
The OP-1 can do all of this and more, and it can almost fit in your pocket. Also, a micro-korg also has quite a lot more functionality. Seems like a waste of money and opportunity to me.
Lil Randy Spectrasonics can do it, and you can download it from the cloud. It’s essentially Granular Synthesis.

Funny how all the music creation noobs think this is amazing and the rest of us realise we can do this and a thousand times more on even the most basic free DAW, or even a mobile app. This is a basic simple toy or artwork nothing more
I was thinking the same
You make EDM and pay others to master your tracks or upload them straight to ShitCloud without even mastering them shut the fuck up.
the trick is to build something simple like that as a hardware with an interesting interface. because then you might use it. if that was a supercollider patch or some dumb plug-in you wouldnt use it anyway.
It's all about the interface. You're right - it is artwork. Isn't that the point?
yes, but not only. easy access (here: to parameters which other instruments dont offer) can also be just a factor of productivity - or fun.
An amazing instrument with huge potential and sound, love it, cheers Clint Australia 🇦🇺
A copy of Steinberg's Padshop Pro (very reasonably priced IMO) and a MIDI controller keyboard would give you similar capabilities I reckon. There is also Granulator II (even more reasonably priced as it is a free Max For Live plugin) for any Ableton Live users out there. The hardware does look cool but if it isn't going to be sold as a product ...............
I was thinking just that. PadShop can probably do more, actually. Unless this think can do key tracking and formant shaping. It does have a nice interface though. I get the feeling it's more of a student project to suit the tastes of it's creator.
all the stuff can be done in Edison in flstudio with a little Brians on it!
Which Brian do you mean? Brian Cox, Brian Johnson, or maybe Brian Blessed? How many Brians do you think you'd need to achieve this in FL?

Yes, I would call this a sampler - as we had as far back in the eighties - but with really tiny 'hard drive capacity' in those days when everything was via MIDI chords to external devices. When DJ Dervish introduced me to Cubase with its own wave files, [in the 90s], he spoke of 'samplers'. But, I said, no, these are 'sample players', as we, like in Yello, enjoyed creating the sample ourselves, not just playing with 'preset' instruments. Many great sounds were created from sampling everything from voice percussion, tapping on metal pipes. to our Tibetan singing bowl.
Now, it's very ordinary - to sample and manipulate the sample. However, it has become much easier, for example to make loops or continuous sounds. it used to take time to find a good spot where a sound could be 'spliced' and/or crossfaded without a 'clicking sound'. We also had to 'map out' different samples over a keyboard and cross fade those to get an even timbre over all the keys.
I'm visually and cognitively impaired - so large visuals and the ease of not thinking too much - is welcome. But I don't see it being for sale. {When and if we gain our freedom and time to do as we please, [instead of fighting for our lives and democracy], it's on the the never-ending list of things to do [or redo].}
Wow man, unnecessary stuff. Just buy a 40€ midi keyboard and plug it in to your DAW (Ableton) and use the free samplers. Marketing is just all about hype.
Sandor Dude i bet this thing is more fun than your daw and a midi Keyboard.
it sounded like it's a university project, wtf marketing or hype are you talking about, it's not a product in stores
witch midi keyboard is good to max 30 euros? Ableton is free program?
rockhardfreak Just because its more fun does not mean its better?
S Dude I think you’re forgetting ableton is like €300
I'm sorry, but this is more of a novelty toy than anything.
Sad but true, it will be available only for top tier musicians. Most succesful synths were relatively cheap and produced in large numbers.
BoxHead's Corner what are you talking about? I see so many things I can do with this. Nevermind me, if this existed when Pink Floyd were at their prime, could you imagine what they would have made?
Ariel Cruz
You do realize these features are basic things that can be achieved with any studio grade daw, right?
This is basic sampleing and editing, which is the key feature of this thing.
Plug a Midi controller and a mic to your computer with a DAW, and you not only have a Collidoscope, but you are a couple steps away from haveing a basic home studio set up, without haveing a glorified, double sided, Edison plugin.
And Pink Floyd's peak was how long ago? How is this relevant to what we need now?
It's a novelty toy.
BoxHead's Corner I mean it's much more flexible having to be used like this thus more creative output being right then and there, what I meant by pink Floyd using it at their prime is that they aren't making any albums anymore but back when they were making meddle or dark side this would be much more accessible to the pure output that they'd want
Not only that but bands like tame impala would be able to use this for live shows
WOW... UNBELIEVABLE GUYS!!!
