  • In this tutorial, we explore databending video in Audacity (digital audio editor) and the glitch visuals that can be created. Follow the step by step instructions from converting your video to a RAW video file, to applying audio effects to the data, and on to successfully exporting the databent video from Audacity. Over 50 different examples of varying glitch visuals created from audio effects, single or stacked, are included in this tutorial.
    Good luck, have fun, and feel free to post any questions you have below in the comments section. Thanks!
    "Databending (or data bending) is the process of manipulating a media file of a certain format, using software designed to edit files of another format. Distortions in the medium typically occur as a result, and the process either falls under a broader category of, or is frequently employed in glitch art." - Wikipedia

    I don't know if anyone else had had this problem. I follow the guidlines, but when I export the file, it exports a very small portion (like 5-6seconds) of the original file and the effect is only seen on the last frame, where it eventually stops. Anyone knows how to fix that?

  • @jeffreepeter930
    @jeffreepeter930 Před rokem +1

    3:56 - Hey mate! If you are usong raw data, there should be no header.... I normally use yuv420p and I don't have to worry about that. My experience is, while you import a picture and change the file, you have got more freedom if you save the picture first in .data or in .raw. After the edit and opening the picture in your favourite tool (gimp or ps:( ) you'll have to select the resolution and the rgb disrtibution (more options). But if you use a video, the header won't just stay at the beggining of the stuff, your delta frames are just going to be messed up. So as far my understanding goes... if I open a 1 minute full hd video as raw data (420p) in audacity, I am going to lose a shit loads of dataspace. but, I can edit the file from the start to the end. If you have a footer and you mess iwth the data, the frame and bitrate wont work out... But you know I just want to understand this stuf stuff and please point out, where, and what I am missing. Great work btw. My favourits are wahwah and trebl.

    • @burntfritter
      @burntfritter  Před 4 lety +4

      I don't own After Effects but I do think I know what you're talking about. I had similar issues with Premiere Pro. You have to remember that the video codec of the "glitched" video is still rawvideo (YV12). That's how we were able to get the effects without completely corrupting the file to destruction.
      In order for After Effects to recognize the video, we need to change the video codec to something it will recognize. I've tried different methods...first, I tried converting it to h.264 via ffmpeg but that cut out the glitch part and shortened the video. I tried a couple more codes in ffmpeg but still nothing quite worked.
      What you'll have to do is open the "glitched" video that has the raw video codec in Avidemux. Left hand column, under "Video", click the drop-down list and select "MPEG-4 ASP (Vxid)". You can leave the audio set to "Copy". You can change the container (file extension) under "Format", left hand column, under the "Audio" encoding option. You can leave it as (.avi) or change it to (.mp4). Make sure you type out the container (file extension) in the file name and that it matches the one selected in the drop-down list. I haven't tried out all the different encoding options, I just got lucky trying this one out first and it worked.
      I think the container is less important than the video codec. You can have an .mp4 or .avi file with the same video codec like MPEG-4 for example. Not all containers can work with all codecs. Google a list of video containers or file extensions and the compatible codecs. That'll help you understand what goes with what and give you more options in the future.
      Let me know if that works for you. Good luck!

      There's a free program called Handbrake that might work, it can convert a lot of formats into something that Premiere or After Effects can open. = ] Just google

    • @burntfritter
      @burntfritter  Před 2 lety

      Hmm maybe try a different player like VLC? Make sure you have the video codec installed on your computer that you are choosing. Some players will only play certain file types with certain containers. It could also be the version of the player you’re using. For instance, I had an older version of VLC that would play pretty much any file even really broken ones. Somehow it updated and then wouldn’t play half of the files it used to. Glitch art is never certain and be frustrating at times when expecting results. Keep at it and I’m sure you’ll figure it out. Good luck!

    Hey, the exporting options have been changed since the making of this video, and now I'm not sure how to export it as a .avi file, because the program doesn't let you just put a suffix onto the file and instead forces you to select from a list of audio formats, do you know how to get around this or what to do at this point?

    • @burntfritter
      @burntfritter  Před 2 lety

      Unfortunately, I haven’t used a newer version of Audacity so I can’t help. Hopefully someone else will see this and have some tips. It does seem like using certain programs for glitch art will only work with certain versions. Eventually the “bugs” will get “fixed” and we can no longer corrupt files in the same way… it can be temperamental at times but that is part of it… it’s experimental and I definitely don’t have all the answers. I don’t have a deep technical understanding of these things… sorry I can’t give you more assistance. Good luck!
