That's not a defense. They do that to tear apart their meal. They can't cut up their food or get any leverage to rip chunks off. They have to knot themselves and push their body/pull their head in order to get a bite of meat.

I was taught very young when I dived for lobsters to NEVER reach under a coral head because of large Moray eel's...They will take your hand off at the wrist in 5 seconds flat!!....Instead I use mops to tangle the lobster into and it, twisting the torso from the tails and bagging the prize!!....I always keep an eye out for HammerHeads/Big Barracuda sea snakes and MORAY EEL!!....Even though I saw a diver who could touch/pet and feed W/O injury a Huge Moray he developed a friendship with after many years of interaction!!...But that is NOT THE NORMAL THOUGH!!...have respect for MORAY and give them space or you will REGRET IT!!
