Observer Spy is viable. You stand behind enemy snipers and say "nice shot" every time they miss a shot. Eventually they get fed up and make it their mission to hunt you down, so they can't snipe your team anymore. Sometimes you even get lucky and they switch to Pyro.

Huntsman is legitimately a good sidegrade in certain situations. You trade off a more predictable, longer-range rifle that charges much slower, cripples your FOV and makes you practically stationary for a short to medium range projectile that can deal high burst damage much faster, barely affects your situational awareness and lets you move around a lot more.
If you use the huntsman like you would a rifle, it is a direct downgrade. However, if you use the faster charge speed, better movement and offensive capabilities that the Huntsman has, you can do a lot of stuff that you just wouldn't be able to practically replicate with the stock rifle.

  • @negativedumpster9778
    @negativedumpster9778 Před 2 lety +2097

By far my favorite subclass is what I call "Paranoia Spy." You equip the following:
    L'etranger
    Red-Tape Recorder
    Spy-cicle
    Cloak-and-Dagger
And then, you spend your time trolling engineers. Not killing them, and very rarely actually destroying their gear, but the red-tape forces them to constantly re-upgrade everything, which is annoying as hell. The Spy-cicle gives you a decent chance to escape from Pyros, and the L'etranger gives a lot more wiggle room under cloak. And the Cloak-and-Dagger is essential, Paranoia Spy literally cannot function without it, since the subclass is all about being annoying and being hard to find.
And when there's no engineers? Shoot someone who just respawned, then go into cloak and see how much time they waste trying to find you while spamming voice commands every time they miss.
You'll end up being more of a pain in the ass than an actual threat, but that's sorta the point :3
I'd honestly say that 90% of my gameplay on spy is just going into the Cloak-and-Dagger and pissing people off.
Edit: fixed a typo in "paranoia".

For example if the team is extremely good at keeping the medic alive, pyros are checking for spies, taking care of afterburn, heavies give sandwiches etc. A medic will be more healing oriented, spending more time keeping the team alive that he would have spent fighting. By contrast if the team is shit, bots either filling chat with slurs, saying that hackers are the good guys because "tf2 causes cancer." Or what have you. Then the medic will be more combat focused, since he can't rely upon his team to help him he has to defend himself.

I have always considered a subclass to be something that trades a core mechanic for a new core mechanic or at least changes it enough that it's different.
Something I used to get a lot on my videos personally were complaints about "Gun Spy being a dead subclass" but Gun Spy to me has never been a subclass because all of Spy's core mechanic are still there. He can still cloak or backstab- he doesn't have to commit to that new playstyle if he so chooses- whereas Demomight and even Hybrid knight will have to commit to their use of Melee weapons to some degree or never truly be effective.
It's the only complaint about some of the "subclasses" you've discussed in this series of TWO WHOLE VIDEOS that I have, but still mesmerising content.

  • @sentrysapper45
    @sentrysapper45 Před 2 lety +82

I've come up with a few subclasses that surprisingly few players seem to attempt. They're not optimal by any stretch of the imagination, but they are fun:
    - The Health Kit Heavy (Heavy): Don't use your primary, equip the Second Banana or Dalokohs Bar for secondary, follow your teammates around and drop food for them when they take damage. You're essentially a mobile Small Health kit, as your food item has the same ten second recharge time and heals teammates for the same 25% of their total HP. Melee can be your choice, though I usually go for either default Fists or Fists of Steel depending on whether or not I feel like punching enemies that get too close or run away (you can also use FoS to tank incoming fire directed towards your teammates or friendly Engineer buildings). You'd be surprised how often other players will thank you for the heals in pubs!
    - The Trench Fighter (Pyro): Essentially the middle ground between the Scout and Fat Scout, you use shotguns (default or Panic Attack) for all ranged combat. Your normal running speed makes you more mobile than the Fat Scout, and your 175 HP makes you a lot more tanky than the Scout...plus you're immune to most forms of afterburn! Melee can be whatever you like, though I go for either the Powerjack for extra speed or the Back Scratcher if Medics are scarce and you're reliant on health packs. Equip the Proof of Purchase (if you have one) to complete the "WW1 soldier with a gas mask" look the subclass was inspired by.
    - The Engibuddy (Engineer): A very selfless playstyle, your main task is to help other Engineers set up and defend their nests. Use whatever loadout you like for this, just prioritize constructing/upgrading/repairing other Engie buildings before your own. Help them keep an eye out for Spies and don't hesitate to put your neck on the line to save them or their nest (within reason of course, don't throw your life away when facing impossible situations). Finally, you don't have to commit to the role; feel free to change classes/playstyle if it looks like they have the situation well in hand.

@@Saltyoven I tried that, but there's no telling when a teammate will yoink a health kit from under your nose. While I think it firmly places me in one of the lower circles of hell, I've been having a lot of fun with a subclass I've called "pester Scout". Via the power of the Shortstop, Pretty Boy's Pocket Pistol, and the Wrap Assassin, you too can be the most irritating thing in the entire game.
You aren't going for kills, no no no... Your job on the battlefield is to do tons of small little chip hits consistently, so the enemy (I believe this works best when picking one one poor soul at a time) has to disengage to heal, or eventually get feed up and runs into danger in order to deal with you. A fight you will most likely win.
If you do secure a kill always taunt after it, and if they do try and engage it is more fun to run away with your better movement to a further location and continue to pester them. I've tried it out with the Flying Guillotine before and lame them out with double bleed, and it does work to decent effect, I believe PBPP is better, due to the survivability it grants you so you can keep on annoying the enemy, and the consistent annoying with low damage shots. The recharge on the Guillotine gives them just a bit too much peace, especially if you miss.
Either way, I know this is the least fun thing to fight against, but I've been having fun, and if somebody does get incredibly angry it is good form to apologise, and go pick on another target. Hope I can inspire others to be the worst!

One permutation of gun spy that I sometimes run is "Mosquito Spy" or "holy shit someone kill this fucking ringer spy". Ringer + L'Etranger + spycicle, your job is to go behind the enemies and just whittle them at range, and ultimately end up kiting the more spiteful people on their team away from the front. Ringer to get out of bad situations, spycycle for pyro, and the french gun for two reasons: it'll recharge your cloak a lot faster when you hit shots, and the damage is low enough to not get kills (letting you get more cloak and spend more time pestering/baiting players), but high enough for people to think it's not scattergun chip from halfway across the map.
I've won games because a pubstomping combo got so pissed off by a french man with a funnny gun and a shiny watch that they decided to give chase and lose the game rather than not and not.

A subclass is a drastically different alternative playstyle that goes against the original playstyle implied by the stock weapons or (in some cases) certain unlocks that minorly effect gameplay such as the sandvich
    For example.
Sniper is a long range pick character, he uses his one shot potential in order to make possibly game winning kills
Huntsman snipers reverse that for a mid range class that can stay much more on the front line and make more aggressive use of his jarate and busch waka, as opposed to the original use it for self defense

The term subclass should be used to reference a particular gear loadout that adds a new distinct feature of the class, often at the sacrifice of another distinct feat, to the point where one's role in combat has been altered.
Demoknight and boxing heavy are the more obvious ones, while the ambassador spy is more subtle. The former 2 involve limits forced by the equipment, while the ambassador simply encourages you to shoot and aim for the head, otherwise making it a useless compared to stock
Does this mean having a different mindset without changing one's loadout does not count for a subclass? That is exactly what it means.
So fat scout doesn't count, battle engineer does, and pybro only does with a sap remover, otherwise you're just playing the same way any other pyro loadout can.

Battle medic is as fair as any other "meme subclass". You're only taking away a healer of there's a class cap and is already full in the team. But if you want a damage class, is more helpfull to have a batle medic than a boxing heavy.

I'd define subclass as any loadout or self limitation or a combo of the two that is a significant variance from the characters' core designs. By this definition, I'd include Kritzkreig and Dragon's Fury as subclasses, akin to Huntsman I suppose. Under this definition as well, Hybrid Knight is a separate sub class to Demo Knight, since the choice of boots over grenade launcher is significant enough. Things like Vax or Quik Fix are more akin to the stock counterpart in terms of function, (defensive ubers), so they don't count, and weapons that alter gameplay significantly can be exceptions if they are versatile enough (Wrangler can be used to great effect as Turtle Engie, Ninjaneer, Battle Engie, etc; Frontier Justice doesn't alter standard gameplay much as any engineer class until you become Revengineer; running Eyelander doesn't inherently make you a Demo Knight, etc.)
That being said, go play Mann with a Plan and blitz unsuspecting gamers with your Escape Plan, 2 health, and a dream.

My favorite Ninjaneer strat is to find a moment during a 2fort match when the enemy team isn't paying that much attention to the interior of their base and then sneak into their Intel Room to build a Sentry Nest :D

    The spyro:
    Back burner, back rake, jet.
Fly behind enemy line and harras the enemy while they're focused on your teammates.
Excellent support and distraction in form of shock ambush

I have a sub class for Demoman called the Demo Eagle or in short the "Deagle" it's Demoman with the base jumper, sticky jumper, and any choice of melee, there it no limitation to what melee you want, whether you wanna absolutely destroy with the skullcutter, get some weirdly powerful buffs with the eye lander, or go on a pan spree, it's all fun.

The huntsman if the right player uses it can be the most terrifying thing I have ever seen in TF2 as they always are able to hit you with that 120 dmg bodyshot even if your going at mach 5 as a troldier they are terrifying.

I used to play hybrid battle medic with the crossbow/quick fix. Like, you're melted by pyro, heavy and sometimes projectile classes, but those bolts do some serious damage, and you can use the quickfix to buff/heal teammates, and in a pinch use the uber to flee.

There's a major issue with your definition of subclass. It can also include gimmicks, which, though similar, should be classified separately from subclasses in the majority of cases.

Pyroshark can be effective on maps where the body of water is really large and all around the map. I've gotten some chain kills airblasting people off the point and into the water on many maps. It really does depend on the map though. Unfortunately gas passer doesn't count

0:28 I think what was ment by "traditional" playstyle is how Valve designed those characters to be played as, most commonly how they do play with their original stock weapons.
