(Failing) to build a new PC. It all goes wrong. Part 1.

- So my main PC that I do all my video editing, programming and anything more complex than talking rubbish on Discord died. Totally dead. How it died is a story for this video and involved me, a new NVMe SSD and a screwdriver.
It wasn't too bad because I'd been looking for an excuse to buy a new machine anyway. My PC was originally created in 2017 to play VR games with a Rift CV1 headset, and over the years has become a tad outdated. I did put a new GPU in the machine and this helped a lot, but the CPU and motherboard were getting on a bit. I just wasn't expecting to need to upgrade so soon.
And I certainly didn't expect the complete mess that ensued when trying to build a new machine. You think it'd be simple, right? Just order the parts, put them together, it takes about half an hour.
Yeah that's what I assumed too. And things were going great until the new machine crashed in its BIOS and refused to boot unless I removed one of the RAM sticks.
This is part 1, part 2 follows...
One of my PC cases had edges so sharp on the internal surfaces that were so sharp, you could used it to cut cheese or even salami. Those were the days when PC building was a dangerous age in the 1990s...Stops people stealing your PC components, at least without losing something in the process...! ;-)
Past me vowed to future me to always and forevermore only buy motherboards with integrated backplates.
And Fractal Design cases that are easy to work with.
Yes, it’s wasteful to spend money on a convenience I only need to be concerned with maybe once per year, but I’ve spent 30 years fighting with PC hardware, so I reckon I’ve served my time.
I love how real bro is 😂
Nice going.
Linux or windows would have formatted for you during install
If you updated your bios, the old ram would properly work
Unless you're not installing windows exFAT was wrong, you need to do in NTFS, and you're doing Linux then that's fine but normally does it for you to install
When formatting for a BIOS update, format the USB thumb drive using FAT30.
Never install front panel wires with GPU in, having it out would have made your life easier
You can always connect the MB cables located at the upper left of the MB before you install it, especially if you plan to add water cooling. Installing the GPU last is also a good idea.
