  • A late summer walk during a heatwave starting at King's Wood with an amazing morning visual display then heading along Kingswood Lane, over countryside to Farleigh, turning into Crewes Lane and heading back via Hamsey Green Recreation Ground and the site fo the former airfield.
Thank you for watching, I really appreciate it.

Hey Phil... our family lived in Orchard Road for several years, and our garden backed on to Kings Wood. I was in the wood almost every day in the summer, and knew it well. We moved away, to South Croydon, in early 1975--almost 50 years ago--but I remember this countryside vividly. I do remember the Grants sports field, but not the hollow tree, and I don't remember hearing of Dead Man's Drop. I used to walk from my house to the hilly field immediately to the south of Mossy Hill Shaw, to escape the insanity of my home... I'd bring my guitar with me to help me chill out. After I moved recently, I found a photo a friend shot of me playing guitar in that field... things like that and your videos really bring the memories flooding back. Thank you for doing this.

Used both Kingswood lane and Crewes Lane to walk home from Warlingham school and save my bus fare :) Don't remember a dead man's drop. Absolutely fantastic video and what lovely weather.

Just caught up with this video - a beautiful walk on a beautiful day! I fondly remember the big, ancient hollow Oak tree along Kingswood Lane, climbing inside as a youngster in the late 1960s. I was quite sad to find it had gone many years ago - I think it was located on, or close to, a curve in the Lane between the main King's Wood entrance and Kingswood Lodge. The latter was I think owned or occupied, for some years by a pro-golfer - Harry Weetman might have been his name? I also recall the big hole in the ground in the far corner of Hamsey Green Rec, which we called 'the bomb hole', although it couldn't have been created in this way as there was a sizeable oak tree which must have been at least 50-60 years old growing up from the bottom. You could scramble down to the bottom, but I don't recall seeing any rats! You could also walk around inside the little wood in the corner behind the hole, and I recall playing a version of 'hide and seek' in there. Sadly, the last time I passed by the wood was no longer accessible.
Many thanks, and look forward to watching the next video ...

Used to go to the rec as well. I’m sure the roundabout was a “witches hat” type where you could get loads of kids on and see how far sideways you could swing it!! Health and safety nightmare these days.

Haha, I think the climbing frame was a dome shape and can recall a later roundabout that was the flatter, sit-on type that we used to spin around at a ridiculous speed! 😂

A lovely part of the world just on my doorstep and has many memories as a kid. At 13 minutes when you get to Farleigh Common, the semi-detached houses to the right, one of them used to be the home of the Buckinghams who owned the Post Office and Haberdashery in Selsdon Parade, that's now long closed. Did you notice the earth berms all along the road? They were installed a couple of years ago to stop Travellers from using the land and leaving a mess (around 17 mins all the way to the Harrow). Prefer the Horseshoe to the Harrow these days, not many eateries recovered well after the lockdowns. Phil, one thing I do appreciate is you do seem to leave in a lot of the walking footage.

I’m sure I remember the Buckingham’s shop sign in Selsdon. Yes I remember Jeremy Pursehouse sorting out those barriers - so far, so good. I find it’s always a challenge as to how much actual walking to show. There’s a thing in filmmaking about filling space + the modern attention span is quite short! I challenge myself a lot when editing so hopefully it’s there or thereabouts 😀

@@philswallow My mother worked in the post office in Buckinghams for years (the worst kids for shoplifting? Croydon High 🤣) As long as there's dialog and the odd bit of info, the more walking footage the better for me as I find it easier to remember than read a map, but finding the balance for a younger takes trial and error, I guess! I have nothing against a 100% walking ASMR video either 🤣

@LoremIpsum1970 some of those non-talking videos get huge viewing numbers. I’ve gone too far the other way now 😂
