  • RAF Kenley, historic airfield and a place with a very special connection to the Royal Canadian Air Force. This year marks their centenary and the team at Kenley Revival put together a trail around the airfield perimeter highlighting those who served and those who sadly lost their lives, where their take-off from RAF Kenley ended up being for the very last time.
I am joined by Linda Duffield from Kenley Revival, and also Neil Broughton meets us part way round. Linda tells us some incredible stories, all of which are fully documented on www.kenleyrevival.org/.
The trail information boards are in place until November 24, 2024. The airfield is open 24 hours per day, 365 days of the year and is well worth a visit.

Thank you to all involved including the Royal Canadian Air Force, Royal Canadian Air Force Association, the Royal Air Force for allowing the boards to be mounted around the airfield and the City Commons team.

Thank you for uploading this Phil. I am Croydon born and bred and still live there. I also lived in Kenley for about a year but never ventured to Kenley Aerodrome. As a WW2 enthusiast I decided to take my dog for a walk up there this morning, and having just got back, I had a great time. I made a point of photographing each of the placards to the men, for looking in to later.

Thank you for your comments, it is a great place, and has a very special "pull". Those stories are so powerful - we were so fortunate to have such incredible support from the Canadians during WW2.

You have to write the screenplay to all these stories. Just wonderful.
Brilliant video, worth watching a couple of times.

Thanks mate, interesting idea! I agree about a couple of watches. When editing it and looking into their eyes on the photos I found it a very powerful set of stories. To think that they took off from that wonderful airfield for the last time. Very sad indeed, incredible sacrifice.

Linda has done a fantastic job. She’s very knowledgeable and approachable too. The Canadians made up a substantial proportion of the RAF and over 10,000 Canadian aircrew died, so for each of the men covered here there are another 200 that died flying for us; heroes all.

There were pupils in my class in 1959/60 (Caterham Valley County Secondary School, now Marden Primary) who fathers' were in the RAF at Kenley.
They were probably working on the decommissioning.
One lad was from Australia, so Commonwealth airmen still involved.
    Interesting talk & walk. Thanks!

Thanks Bill, always great to hear of a connection with the activities at some of the areas I have filmed. It really is a very special place indeed!

@@philswallow I probably told you before but my mum met my dad at a dance in Caterham, he was stationed at Marden Park with the Canadian artillery. She was one of the war brides that went to Canadian in 1946, my oldest brother Colin was born in Canada, he never became a British citizen even though he lived in the Uk since about 1950.

Andy, I thought that was the case and mentioned it to Linda but because I wasn't 100% sure I didn't include it. That said, I may do something else Canadian related in the future so will be in touch for any more information you may have as tying it to specifics would make for a really good story. Cheers mate.
