Grigory Sokolov - Chopin: Nocturne in A Flat Major, Op. 32 No. 2, Lento

  • Music made in the present moment, unique and unrepeatable, is all that matters to Grigory Sokolov. Critical acclaim and audience ovations underline the humanity and compassion conveyed by Sokolov’s work, reflected not least in reviews that speak of his “genius” and status as a “living legend”. Grigory Sokolov’s charismatic artistry holds the power to cultivate the concentration necessary for audiences to contemplate even the most familiar compositions from fresh perspectives. In recital, he draws listeners into a close relationship with the music, transcending matters of surface display and showmanship to reveal deeper spiritual meaning. His latest release, a double album, comprises a selection of live recordings from three recitals given in the summer of 2019.
    Watch Grigory Sokolov perform Frédéric Chopin's Nocturnes No. 2 in A Flat Major, Op. 32, Lento.

    out of this world!!: i was lucky enough to hear the same recital as the CD (sonata n.3, bagatelles and intermezzi) in bologna last summer. it really felt like he was playing every note for the first time, like he was discovering the music in front of me.
    i'm so lucky that this giant likes my town, i've already been able to hear him live 5 times: he's just perfect, with the hands of 25 year-old, the maturity and experience of a master, and the sheer joy in playing of a child.
    he's not only one of the greatest pianist to ever grace the instrument, but also the last apostle of the same russian school as Richter and Gilels, no one will ever be able to make the piano sing/vibrate quite like them.
    thanks DG for the great quality audio/video, i'd never heard this nocturne played so beautifully.

    • @ws8434
      @ws8434 Před 4 lety +1

      totally agree, listening to Sokolov (especially live) feels like being back in time, the sound he produces is a miracle more often than not. But hopefully the 'end' of this famous Russian school has not come yet - you should really listen to anything by Alexandra Dovgan. Although only being 13 or so she comes closest in sound, seriousness and 'musicality' to the great maestro. It's absolutely incredible, but actually she was honourfully pronounced by Sokolov himself as a (future) star, so no big surprise. I remember listening for the first time to some Rachmaninov Prelude played by her and I figured it was equal to Sokolovs performance, which really shocked me considering her age. Also her Beethoven is very mature and has no elements of showing off. So I'm very excited about her future and really do hope that she will keep up this attitude and good work...

Don’t get me wrong it’s an extremely beautiful interpretation and I like the nuance and the difference in atmosphere he brings, but Rubinstein’s performance for me will always be #1. In a valiant effort into be musical,the Maestro takes liberty with a slow tempo, especially the middle f minor section. If one compares the 1950's Rubenstein performance, it shows the essential nature of how important tempo is. Chopin should never be dragged. When Maestro Sokolov brings the tempo up a bit it makes a tremendous difference. Of course his interpretation is his own and I must respect it.

    In Schumann's other writings about Chopin that exist from 1836 through 1842, there is a good deal of positive feedback, although one will likely glean that Schumann was disappointed that there was not more significant development or innovation. In fact, he said more than once that Chopin's work was instantly recognizable because it was all so similar. He acknowledged Chopin's original showing as fabulous, and worried that it was too much for him to be more than that. "When he has given you a whole succession of the rarest creations, and you understand him more easily, do you suddenly demand something different? This is like chopping down your pomegranate tree because it produces, year after year, nothing but pomegranates." And furthermore: "We fear he will never achieve a level higher than that he has already reached. . . . With his abilities he could have achieved far more, influencing the progress of our art as a whole."In his 1841 review of Chopin's Sonata in B-flat minor in particular, Schumann did not seem to be happy with his fellow composer's progress. Although he talks about the abundance of beauty in the work, he also says that the "sonata" as a title must be in jest: "[Chopin] seems to have taken four of his most unruly children and put them together, possibly thinking to smuggle them, as a sonata, into company where they might not be considered individually presentable." To Schumann it seemed that Chopin had lost his way, and gotten too wrapped up in virtuosity for its own sake. He decries "obstacles on almost every page" with indecipherable progressions. The second movement - again claiming the marking "Scherzo" was in name alone - he describes as a "funeral march with something even repulsive about it."
    "A book of Mazurkas by Chopin and a few new pieces of his are so mannered they are hard to stand"-Felix Mendelssohn, 1835
    "A composer for one right hand" -Richard Wagner
