I actually don’t hate it. The Champs job isn’t to fight the #1 ranked contender, it’s their job to fight the highest ranked opponent that is also available. Dustin may not deserve the title shot as much as oliveira or Gaethje, but since they are both busy I don’t mind that he gets the fight. Although the matchmaking doesn’t quite make sense, the fans actually win because we are getting more fights.

Worrying about your weight when you need to worry about your skills isn't the best path to beating Islam.

I'm all for the Dustin fight honestly. We all know Dustin is at the end of his peak, so this is his last hurrah for the title. Dustin may get dismantled by Islam too, but Olives and Arman have alraady lost to Islam. Justin took the Holloway super fight (and if Islam is a better wrestler than Khabib then Islam will crush him on the ground easier than Khabib did). The only other person is Gamrot, but its not like that's a harder fight for Islam than Dustin.

Ali and Islam know they're a week away from more difficult opponents calling for the title-shot after UFC 300. Dustin is probably the easiest task for Makhachev, so you can see why they're speeding this matchup through and saying 'there was nobody else available', just before Arman potentially gets a quick finish this weekend (for example)
This makes the most sense. Timing matters. The way Charles and Gaethje fight, there’s a strong chance they wouldn’t be available to fight until the fall.
Why hold up the division with 1 defense per year. Depending how the fight goes, Islam could defend two times this calendar year.
People may not like it, but this is best for the division to keep things moving. Since the only other 3 possible top LW’s are fighting next week.
People are discussing whether Poirier deserves the shot, but who else is Islam going to fight in June if not Dustin (#3)? In order of rank, Gamrot's (#6) available, then the next three guys are all coming off a loss, and then it's Hooker at 9 and Turner at 10. So if Islam wants to fight in June, then there's literally no-one else, unless people are expecting Gaethje, Oliveira or Tsarukyan to fight at UFC 300 and then again less than two months later at 302.

Dustin has put in enough work in the UFC to deserve a title shot at any time. You could always throw him into a title fight. He's only got a handful of fights left most likely, I think it's a right place right time thing too but Dustin's resume speaks for itself. BSD was supposed to run over Dustin and he got knocked the f out. Dustin is always a viable challenger.
I'm not sure what kind of a chance he has against Poirier but we really don't know until it happens. People have off nights, weird stuff can happen it def wouldn't be the first time. I really like both guys but for Dustin's career if he pulled this off it makes the entire journey worth it, I'd love to see it.

We have a situation where the top contenders are ducking the champ. Yesterday, Charles said he prefers a "red panty night" with Conor over a title shot vs Islam. On the same day, Justin said he is willing to wait for the winner of Charles vs Arman to get the shot ahead of him to avoid Islam in Abu Dhabi. When the top contenders are actively ducking the champ, you have to go with the one who has the balls to fight him.
We all know Charles didn't wanted to fight Champ thats why he pulled out last year twice against Benny and Makachev

Makachev wants someone fresh, and it leads to either the third and definitive nail in the coffin of DP's title shots (BSD probably would've got a shot off Dustin, who has earned 3 title shots a hell of a lot more than Colby Covington did to get his), a trilogy fight with Gaethje to unify the belts, or even the Conor title shot that the UFC will inevitably force on us anyways, with a storyline behind it.
Put away meritocracy, because that's never been what the UFC has ever been about, and ask yourself how this can possibly be bad for business or for us as fans.

The fight with Dustin does make sense because Dustin is ranked number three in and he doesn’t have a whole lot time left. He has accomplished so much throughout his career except capturing the elusive title belt. They told him if he’s able to take out this young hungry up-and-coming killer in Benoit Saint Denis then he will get another shot. I was there in Miami for it and Dustin slept him. Dustin is a legend and when you do good work for the UFC the UFC will take care of you. Dustin will need to be absolutely flawless.

And, the guy he's calling to fight is someone who he himself says doesn't deserve to fight for the belt. Amazing fighters, perhaps the best, but we don't need to pretend about anything else. Charles (if he wins against Tsarukyan) or Gaethe should be the next in line for the title shot, but Charles made such a bad strategic choice by coming out and stating he would "rather fight Connor than Islam", now he might not see that title shot EVER again. And Conor is not fighting him as well, I think it's not in his best interest to fight a peaked fighter like Charles and the much safer bet is Chandler if he wants a W, plus the whole build up for his return was against Chandler. This is a shame as well for Islam's legacy... it makes him look like he's favored by the UFC.
