In this video Dr Hannah Wakeford and I combine our atmospheric and planetary physics PhD skills to review planets from Games Workshop's Warhammer 40k to see which ones could really exist in our galaxy! We review Cadia, Istvaan III, Catachan, Barbarus, Tinek'la, Titan, and Mars. One of these is Hannah's absolute favourite world. One of them is perfectly balanced with no exploits.

With ninth edition coming up, what better time to review the planets? 9th ed holds many surprises, but we doubt it will make any of these planets more possible. No number of command points will save Tinek'la or Barbarus from planetary physics! Thanks again to Spiffing Brit for bringing some perfectly balanced tea drinking and to Rimmy from the yogscast for his Catachan charms via their voices. Also apologies if you like T'au but let's face it - you're a bit of a weeb.

So about Mars: I think that by the time the Mechanicum took control, the artificial magnetosphere had long since failed, and the surface had been scoured and irradiated by nuclear warfare. In M41, Mars is a deathworld hostile to all life, and cannot be lived on without cybernetic augmentation or advanced habitat technology, which I think adequately explains why the Mechanicus like cybernetics so much.
That and the Void Dragon influence
There are also mutants on the surface, so not completely hostile to life.

We should also remember that the Imperium of man is not the first to terraform Mars.
It would have been the first target of colonization and terraforming in the dark age of technology during the great exodus. And seeing what they left behind like STC's, restarting a planets magnetosphere would have been piss easy for humanity at that stage.
Also due to a civil war where the winners used a lot of cybernetics and formed a cult around them

Man, this was pretty cool. You both are pretty funny and the references were on point.
It'd probably be really boring, but Mass Effect has dozens of planets complete with small information blurbs and detailed statistics. For example, Noveria has an orbital distance of 0.9 AU, an orbital period of 0.9 Earth years, a day length of 52 Earth hours, an average surface temperature of -1 °C, a surface gravity of 0.81 *g*, and weighs 0.63 Earth masses. I always wondered if they were just pulling all those stats out at random or if they could actually make sense. Now that I'm thinking about it, they probably just copied known exoplanets for their details.
On top of that, several of the background flavour planets are Hot Jupiters, such as Rescel, located in the Satent System of the Pylos Nebula. There's also one called Wallace, in the Skepsis System.
Mass Effect would be really cool if only for aliens such as the Volus. They are aliens with an Ammonia-based biochemistry and live on worlds with atmospheric pressures similar to Venus. I've always wondered whether such life was possible.
That spiff cameo caught me completely off guard, really cool video I’d love to see more hypothetical science applied to fictional universes.

In the tenth Ciaphas Cain Novel is a planetary system, which has a massive gas giant with orbiting planets on its fringes, which essentially forms its own mini system in the larger star system.
That's rad
That is not really a strange thing, you have the same thing in our own system. That's Jupiter for you. Its moon, Ganymede, is 26% larger than Mercury, a planet. Or Titan, a moon of Saturn, larger than Mercury. And we know there are far larger gas giants than Jupiter out there (due to their size, they were the first planets discovered outside of our system) so those having a dozen or so planet-size moons is not really a stretch... as a matter of fact, it would be strange if it was otherwise.
As I said, that exact thing you described we have in our own star system.
@@Wustenfuchs109 You are of course correct, the difference is mostly in scale, if i remember correctly the "gas giant" in the novel also provides light, so it is more like a mini star.
@@blacktemplar2323 that wouldn't make sense, unless it is a white dwarf that gas somehow trapped in orbit around a newer star
I think that's still possible. A gas giant that is a mini star. It'd be some kind of dwarf star in a binary star system, wherein it's orbiting an even larger star. Something like WISE 0855−0714 which is a brown dwarf that's planet-sized.
3:20 I love how a bunch of dudes literally had to calculate the odds of them accidentally burning everyone on the planet into a crisp. Imagine the pressure and quadruple checking they probably had to make with that fear of accidentally wiping everything from existence

Friendly reminder that the Imperial Japanese Army encouraged quasi-suicidal charges into melee for the glory of the Emperor, making the IG twice the weebs the Tau will ever be
and Hittler SS units were the most ethnicaly diverse force. Having divison of muslims, central Asians and even some Inds making tau even worse, because GW will never develop the lesser xenos allies of tau and fully embrace them being the 40k Mass effect parody. So much about Frank Grimes faction of 40k.

@@AlarmedSpore foreign SS divisions were a real thing, up to the siege of Berlin.
@@AlarmedSpore You don't knnow about it? It had units from all over the world. There were french, swedes, latvians, norwegians, hungarians, italians, lithuanians, russians, bosnians, inds, croatians, ukrainians, few englishmen (I think one american was also serving in that english unit), czechs (surprisingly they were set up to have a fighting force at the end of the war, but it was so late that it ended up only as few men without many rifles with few pieces of uniforms running off somewhere into forest), belgians, etc. fighting for Third Reich, some of them serving in Wehrmacht, some even got it's own SS legion (Handschar for example was made up of bosnian muslims).
Imperial Japan predates weeb Japan so suicidal charges are cool
@Simon Clark aksually you can make an orbital ring with modern materials! There are two types. Clarke Rings - the simplest one at that - a ring at geostationary orbit, requiring no active support. Orbital Rings - look it up. You use a bunch of magnetically driven metal beads to keep the ring from falling. you don't even need supports. You can make tethers and cables for elevators though.
Fuck that noise, you just need a few billion Cogs and a Dozen Mechanicus Brand Gravitronic Engines!
Not necessarily beads another variant of this idea is to basically build a gigantic planet-sized particle accelerator and use protons. The same basic idea through the centripetal force needed to keep the particles following the circular path should equal the weight of the rest of the structure. Atlas pillars also use a similar idea except the particle accelerator is elongated and when the particles are redirected at each end it keeps the structure supported in tension instead of compression.
“Somewhere, something incredible is waiting to be known.”
― Carl Sagan

40K in a nutshell is the Late Roman Empire in the West but in Space, a dying Ancient Empire surrounded by Galaxy ending threats.
Factions
The Imperium = Humanity ~ 38,000 years from now which is a Theocratic Totalitarian Empire Founded by a Superhuman called the God Emperor which came about after a Great collapse of the Previous Golden Age called the Dark age due to tons of lost knowledge. Most of the Human factions are Imperial from the Astartes/Space Marines who are supersoldiers that originate from the Sons of the Emperor (thus limiting recruits to males) to the Imperial Guard, the Imperium's regular Army composed of regular soldiers and the Sororitas, an All women Religious Military Order under the command of the State Church (under a loophole that "No Man should bare arms for the Echlisiarchy)
Eldar: similar to the Imperium experienced a Golden age before their fall but fell when they created the Chaos God of Excess that nearly caused their extinction, the Eldar is traditionally separated into 2 groups the Craftworld Eldar (basically High Elves) that live in Gigantic Ships called Craftworlds and the Dark Eldar (basically Dark Cenobite Elves) degenarate Aliens that use torture to protect their souls to the Dark god they made named Slanessh.
Chaos: An Extra Universal group of Gods that exist in a parallel universe called the Warp a universe where the laws of Physics don't exist and is used for space travel, the Chaos Gods have many Agents including Daemons but the most prominet are their worshipers the Chaos Marines, they consist of Traitors to the Imperium that separated following Horus one of the Sons of the Emperor that Rebelled, Chaos is feed by Negative Emotions hence their followers sacrefice many people to them as they can be rewarded to become a daemon prince and be immortal.
Orks: Ancient Bioweapons created by Aliens called the Old Ones a long extinct group of highly intelligent Aliens, Orks are as the name suggest are much like their Orc fantasy counterparts, they are lead by the strongest Orks, violent and are crude but uniquely they can will their weapons to work thanks to being very psychic with it being called Whagg! energy.
Necrons: A very Old Alien "species" that were the rival of the Old Ones and caused their extinction, once fragile Humanoid Aliens that lived short lives, the Necrons are Alien Cyborgs made of Living Metal a self repairing material, they are the most Advanced of the factions being able to imprison the C'tan their god like overlords after they rebelled realising the C'tan made most of them lose their free will, after the Rebellion most fell into sleep with some waking up to reclaim their planets and recreating their Empires.
Tyranids: the Most extraterrestrial, they live to consume the galaxy, living Ecosystems they originate outside of the milky way and have been striping planets dry for food for sometime, they are like the Bugs and Zerg in Starship Troopers and Star Craft but far more numerous, their origin and exact numbers though are a mystery many even speculate that the current invasions are simply "scouts".
Tau: Youngest and the most "progressive" of the Factions, the Tau are Frail Aliens that live in a strict Cast system that relys on other Aliens and even humans as auxiliaries, they have a very small empire compared to the Imperium but have advanced Mech, Rail and Plasma technology.
Hands down, you are great! Thank you, Simon.
Great stuff man loved both parts, great memes :D

_definitely_ Mass Effect, including Andromeda
So that Andromeda can get more shit thrown at it? Just let every one forget it ever existed
What is this Andromeda? The only Andromeda I know is the galaxy. Defiantly don't know anything else called Andromeda.
On a side note, would really like a new Mass Effect game. There hasn't been one since Mass Effect 3.
Simon, You are out doing yourself! First, the chicken run video and now, this! I loved the cameos from Spiffing and Rimmy and the humour was so on point. Love this series. Could you guys review the Starfinder planets?
4:57 I forgot that they quoted Sly Marbo in that movie!
These videos are awesome. Love it!
In the Book Mechanicum from the Horus Heresy they specifically mention, that the Iron Core of Mars has been "restarted" and the volcanic activity is used to power things, like the Magma City. That liquid core would also generate a magnetic field to shield from the radiation.
That war of the worlds stinger got me good. suprisingly good taste as ever.
Spiff's 'I love toasters' really got me... Bravo, sir! Great job on the videos! Loved the stuff on Mars as I've done some work with the geology of our little red brother planet.
The Catachan comedic bit made me suggest you have a talk with Bruva Alfabusa. I cannot help the thought of THAT guide interacting wth the TTS Catachans. For some reason I find it funny. Or if nothing else, to make sure you KNOW the glory that is TTS.
Well you got me hooked guys new subscriber glad to be part of the family
Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds certainly fits 40k :)
As a fan of Firefly, it is known we have terribly little content to revel in. So when you suggested making a planetary analysis on the firefly worlds, it instantly became my most wanted thing. But really, the ‘Verse is weird with its many close stars, and have always wanted to know how plausible it is.
This is a very Shiny idea
The planets of expeditionary force would make an awesome videos! And thx for these two on 40K - great stuff!
I really enjoyed this Video and the last one, love the effort you've put into it! There are however, a few notes I might add on the firestorm of Istvann and the Ignition of the Atmosphere.
While you correctly describe that Methane is lighter than normal Air composition, The life eater virus isn't described as turning all biomass into a gas, it stays more as a highly reactive jelly like substance, perhaps comparing it to a Biodiesel with other compounds still yet to decompose! The time scale of the transition from life to jelly was described in minutes, so I would think that with some more math, the verdict is still out on the possibility of an atmospheric ignition.
I love these videos more than I can say. I use the science you describe here to design scientifically accurate worlds for my Stars without Number campaign. One of my players said a jungle planet was not possible, so I had to give him a lecture on the heat trapping properties of water vapor.
Also, maybe you could talk about the few planets we see in Hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy?
Just finished the first, cant wait to see more planets!

Halo had a hot Jupiter that Admiral Cole made turn into a sun temporarily by nukeing it. That would be cool to check the math on.
CADIA STILL STANDS
THE PLANET BROKE BEFORE THE GUARD!
Considering we aren't in the 40 millenium yet yes, yes it does!
In pieces
*Cadia is everywhere*
The first example of how planets act like fluids when struck was actually depicted semi realistically in the Horus Heresy. It happened to a World Eater's recruiting world when the Iron Hands punted its moon on a direct collision course with the planet, completely obliterating the planet, the moon, and everything on it. But it didn't do the usual description of the planet cracking apart into chunks, but rather it describes the moon being slowly subsumed into the planet, while a huge ripple spreads across the crust. Just a little thing for those interested.
I think I speak for everyone here: Hannah looks gorgeous in the new edition cinematic trailer!! :D
This is pure gold!
I'd have to imagine that the Mars ring is made of capsules for storing crews, machines, materials and pre-built components, clamps that act as dry-docks, and a bunch of other stuff that may be looted from alien civilizations, connected together with rails that slide along each other, making a hellish racket all the while.
It may not have broad appeal but i would love to see an analysis of planets in the Hyperion book series or space battleship Yamato (Star blazers) Child me would love that one.
The hyperion ones would be great!
hell yeah the "is it possible?" videos are awesome!
Would love to see some Star Trek planets! To name a few of the more interesting ones: Risa (a Resort World with weather control and tropical climate), Andoria (Frozen moon around a ringed gas giant, home to the Andorians), Drema IV (a pre-warp civilization planet that became geologically unstable due to a large crystal lattice), and Dakala (a rouge planet home to groupings of non-photosynthetic plants and an intelligent species around hot geothermal vents). Saying as it is a show about strange new worlds, I think you should be able to find quite a few interesting ones. You could also look at the classification system they use and whether it makes sense or not. I have been loving these planet videos so regardless of the universe, keep it up!
This was really cool. I love seeing someone put the science into science fiction.
Never touched WH but loved the video. Great work.
Great video, funny memes

If anyone is curious the Binary at 16:18 says hello yes have you tried lighting incense
17:44 You clearly haven't watched the Science Fiction masterpiece of "The Core".
Science Fiction? I thought it was a documentary.
You should look at the edge chronicles, it's not multiple different worlds but it's such a cool world with rocks that float and storms and lightning and stuff
I have never had an encounter with warhammer but still I enjoyed the two videos. Strange. Interesting.
Try the Honourverse, has some interesting planets there. Also, they have a planet named titan, with 11 moons. The wiki even mentions details like diameters, gravity and satellites. Some even mentions how many light-minutes illumination takes to cross the surfaces.
Should be good details to poke though for plausibility.
In regards to Tinek'la potentially a white dwarf core can become comprised of a substantial about of carbon which under the immense gravitational pressure could make it largely diamond. It wouldn't be a pure crystal and I don't think any white dwarf stars have cooled enough to be usable but it could be a potential answer.
It would be really cool if you guys did a video about uncommon types of exoplanets that are basically unseen in science fiction.
With regards to Mars, there is a story set in the Horus Heresy which describes how Mars has been maintaining its magnetosphere from its early terraforming days. Namely a gigantic axle run through Mar's core spun by motors located in two Forge Temples at the poles; Vertex Borealis and Vertex Australis (naturally the techpriests no longer have any idea how to repair or rebuild it)
I love this so much.
I love that Rimmy is in this video.
You could take a look at the planets and objects from the Mass Effect series. Lots of interesting stuff to talk about there.
Mass Effect!! The Pax system where Noveria is located has a Hot Jupiter and that's just off the top of my head!
Also I personally use Notion as well. It's really wonderful, and it's free!
CZcams: "How much nerd do you want in your video?"
Me: "Yes"
I fucking love this series of whether a fictional universe's planets can exist. You get legit scientific information and memes in one awesome package. What's not to love?!
I absolutely love that you refer to Dr. Wakeford as Magos. And also lovely video in general. Edit: Praise the Emprah! Can't believe I forgot to do that.
One possible stabilizing mechanism for the equatorial ring around Mars could be a stationary tube running through the entire ring, filled with a fluid at a high velocity. the centrifugal force would counteract the pull of gravity. It would require an ludicrous amount of power to keep the fluid going around at sufficient speeds but we are talking about WH40K.
I remember this from one video from Arthur Isaac I watched years ago. Don't remember which one.
The Twelve colonies of Kobol (Battlestar Galactica), the Verse (from Firefly as previously mentioned), Doctor Who, Star Trek, and Babylon 5 would all be great settings to examine.
8:40 where does that Dyson sphere/mega ringworld picture come from? I really like it.
My vote is the MASS EFFECT universe. Nearly every planet has a dossier explaining it's stats. If you choose this canonical universe I'd appreciate a look at my personal favorite planet from any fictional universe, Klendagon. To myself, I find it funny how much I love this planet, considering it's not one you ever get to actually visit in the games, but I still love it.
Actually the first Death Star was 160km. The second was 200km. Meaning the first was roughly the same diameter as Port Maw, while the second was actually larger.
and being unfinished was vaguely reminiscent of it as well
