As a former hardcore evangelical living in the states, it’s both exhausting and terrifying watching my former fellows systematically take over the country. When I left the religion, I was so excited to live my own life, my own way. Now the evangelicals are threatening to force me to live their way again, under… what, threat from the law?
It’s why I’m so active politically. I just want to be free, damnit!
Nick Fuentes says they are going to "drag us bitch wives out of our houses, kicking and screaming, and burn us at the stake..." And also something about going back to the middle ages.
Scary times we live in - I am a native American, anti-theist, with a pentagram on the side of my home. (The Christians don't bother to know that the pentagram was their symbol first, as it symbolizes the stations of the cross!)
But.... I suppose I'll be drug out kicking and screaming then.... "There shall be no establishment of a national religion." -U.S. constitution. We can't let them win!
I second that😤
Underrated comment
EU > US
The craziest part is that those people probably only go to church for the optics and connections. Then don’t follow the believes at all in their day to day life.
I always like to say, "God promised He wouldn't flood the earth again, but He never promised WE wouldn't."
Also the "we're not even taking care of our own" people will turn around and immediately oppose things for like, local homeless people, or people suffering from addiction, or people in prison, or people with health issues.
You have to understand that to them, their own means only white heterosexuals men, all the others are not considered people so off course they would be against that.
These are the "support our troops" folks who keep voting for the party that constantly votes to defund the VA.
What they mean is I'm not being taken care of well enough but screw my neighbor.
Even if those people are in the same church as them.
Idea for a future video essay: Christian “humility”. You can take that wherever you want to go with it. It seems that this humility before God gives them license to tell everyone else what to do and not do.
Exactly. And they are the ones who feel persecuted! Poor babies!
Christian humility is the fakest thing and it's just a cover for dominionists.
That seems kinda similar to his Christian Love video, but I could see it being different enough to be it's own video
Or how about the word “pride” becoming a weapon to beat down anyone around them. I grew up fundamentalist and I remember being insulted for expressing pride simply because I objectively said that I was good at something I had worked hard to become good at. Or the equivalency that Christians use to attack “confidence in who I am” but without realizing that “proud of my country” does the same? There’s so much on this topic!
Did you know Moses was the most humble person on the face of the earth. He said so him self. "Now the man Moses was very humble, more than all men who were on the face of the earth." Numbers 12:3. D'oh!
Guys the founding fathers wanted church and state separated. You can go on line and find all kinds of quotes from the founders like this. “In every country and in every age, the priest has been hostile to liberty. He is always in alliance with the despot, abetting his abuses in return for protection to his own. It is error alone that needs the support of government. Truth can stand by itself.”
Thomas Jefferson
I've seen evangelical types take that quote by Jefferson and twist it to imply he was specifically talking about the Catholic church (since he used the term "priest").
@@liveoak227 it's true anything can be twisted, but that is far from the only thing he and other founding fathers wrote on the subject.
Based TJ
I think it’s a dead end to find quotes from the so-called founding fathers to bolster a point. We need to move to a “fuck what the founding fathers believed” perspective, and fight for what’s right in 2022 and beyond. Enough fetishizing the political thought of colonizers, slavers, and otherwise flawed people from a time almost entirely divorced from our own.
@@dingdongism you're not wrong, I was responding to something they said in the video.
I prayed the belief away! That's not what I was hoping for at the time though, but I'm glad it happened
Well you loose some you win some.
I oft prayed for the wisdom of Solomon as a child. Now I'm an atheist. Either prayers aren't answered or God has a sick sense of humor.
Lol basically same tho...
@@TheNotoriousBTG me too!! Christians should really be a lot more careful when they use their fables to promote critical thinking, might effect attendance negatively 😳
As someone from the US, I'm deeply disturbed by the growth of christian nationalism. They are a small minority in this country and somehow they've gained too much political power. A church close to where I live has about 30 american flags around it, probably more than in the county's government offices. The problem we face is due to a slight oversight in the constitution allowing for only 2 senators per state no matter the population. We have more red states than blue, but the blue states have a larger population so we have more senators representing a small percentage of our total population allowing for minority rule.
They gained power because ever since the 1980s only half of eligible Americans bothered to vote.
Sadly, giving more power to states with smaller populations is a feature, not a bug
It's not somehow? They have been working on this for decades. It is a quiet coup.
To be fair, yes each state has two senators, but every state has members in the House of Representatives proportional to their population. It's still not fair tho bc the Senate is generally more influential ://
And yeah, I'm disturbed too. I really have very little faith (heheh) that this situation will improve...
People in leadership positions being appointed by God, acting according to their values, because the values are part of God's plan - that's literally one of the defining characteristics of monarchy.
Absolute monarchy, at that.
*laughs in divine right*
In most circumstances Yes, barring imperial China (divine right was considered fallible) and a few states were divine right was less significant than military or political power.
I grew up super conservative Evangelical, and my family really taught me that the laws should reflect the Bible. Now I’m an adult trying to figure out what I believe, but I sure don’t believe in Christian nationalism any more. It seems theologically flawed to me, for one thing, and deeply anti American as well. Let alone white supremacist...but the whole “theocracy” goal is very scary to me now, especially as someone with friends from other religions and communities
Theocracy. Right. Which "theo" gets to rule? The most powerful, whitest, loudest, and most intimidating church blocs, probably. Just another might-makes-right system using "God" as ammunition.
I found the discussion of Canada day interesting. I'm an Australian & the celebration of Australia day here has also become a bit "on the nose," as the indigenous community associate the date used with the invasion of their land & mass murder of their people. Indigenous & a lot of others want the date changed so all can celebrate more inclusively. Of course including everybody is a step way too far for some people.
7:42 the whole “we’re not helping our own” crowd *also* says “other countries have it worse than you poors in America, stop complaining!”
They love to tell poor Americans what “real” poverty is. Hell, Fox News once aired a segment about how 99% of poor people in America have refrigerators and a tv, so it’s not real poverty.
Refrigerators and televisions, but no food or electricity. American consumerist culture ensures that the objects are readily available, but rugged individualism ensures that the services/resources are not. Funny how they never mention that.
Lol yet Zimbabwean cities look better than most US towns
They (people like Reagan and his anti-safety net followers) say poor people have it too good, but would they switch with them?
Didn't think so.
@@cindys9491 HAH I don’t know why, but this reminded me of an episode of Scrubs where rich girl Elliot has just been cut off by her parents, and tells two people who grew up poor “It’s just harder for me because I’ve always had everything. I got used to it. You guys never had to deal with that” 😂
It's no wonder this is happening. I grew up isolated within the Evangelical Christian Community. My childhood is filled with songs like, "Onward! Christian soldier" and "I'm in the Lord's Army, yes sir!" I remember hearing leaders in my earliest memories telling us that we were fighting against Satan and the world. That we needed to stay away from non-Christians because we might be tempted to stray from God's will for us. Put on the armor of God, and prepare for battle. They train kids to be radical. I am thankful each and every day I am now Atheist. The true battle is defending the US against these Christian Nationalists who are actively destroying rights for countless Americans.
I was kind of atheist after my LDS social service conversion therapy failed. i knew the church was false before that, but there was a kind of a sunk cost fallacy going on. But when my mother died, there wasn't anybody tying me to the church. So I forced the church to excommunicate me and declared myself atheist. Then, I immersed myself in atheist thought. I knew that if I were to feel safe as a gay man, I would have to become militant atheist. My research indicated there was a choice between Madalyn Murray O'Hair and Paul Kurtz. Madalyn was anarchist. Paul was libertarian. I already felt that libertarian philosophy was secular fascism and so I joined American Atheists. Despite my efforts, the fascists won.
:(
in 1800 there were less than one billion people on the planet. now there is close to 8 billion. i doubt the founding fathers thought the population would ever be as numerous as it is now.
Peaceful means don’t work
There were Confederate flags at the Canadian "Freedom Convoy". I forgot about the famous American Civil War battle of Montreal, Canada. Where The Union troops battled The Canadian Mounties.
Fun fact, that battle was the 1st and only time that War Moose were used on the battlefield.
The War Moose were a terrifying battlefield presence, but they refused to be ruled by mere humans
LOL yeah I remember that from history class
Also there were Trump flags. It wasn't the smartest crowd.
Playing with fire training the moose for war, it didn't turn out well for Australia and their Emu war!
I love how I just found out we had war moose and I'm not even surprised. Also not surprised that we only tried it once.
It irks me so much that the Supreme Court voted in favor of that religious football coach. One of their points was that he was praying privately… either they didn’t bother to watch video recordings of his prayers, or they just didn’t care about any evidence (they probably just didn’t care). The court is so.. ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. I just “love” that they are doing all they can to push their own religious beliefs/opinions on to every single person in the United States. How sad/horrible.
I was raised in a Christian Nationalist environment. There is a firm belief within this movement (which I was raised in), that all of our society's problems would disappear if everyone would just follow the Bible. Of course, "following the Bible" is incredibly loaded, and in the context of the movement, ultimately means "following the right wing conservative agenda."
It makes sense that they'd think all the world's problems if everyone believed what they believed if they view people not believing what they believe as a problem. Circular logic.
I always wondered.. what's the point of praying if god has a plan?
I've heard an argument you can change God's mind. But if he is all knowing why would he change his plans?
George Carlin does a great bit on this very subject.

I was raised fundamentalist Catholic, was just abused every way you can think of by my stepfather who felt his behavior was justified via Christian teachings. I don’t think I can verbally described how awful, suffocating, and restrictive those teachings are, especially as a women. The pressure of purity culture on top of being the oldest of nine on top of being a literal bastard child from an unsavory relationship made my life hell to the point where I wasn’t afraid of eternal damnation because nothing could be worse than what I faced every fucking day.
I escaped, I moved out, I’m almost done with a college degree. But the rise of mostly white Christian nationalism rocks me on a level that I don’t think other people who weren’t raised in fundamentalist circles feel. I though I escaped, but with ever new Supreme Court decision it feels like the claws of my past are closing around me again. I have a pressure in my chest where I feel like I need to constantly scream. Im fucking afraid, it’s like I’m being smacked back down to where I started.
It’s to the point where im looking for mostly international job opportunities. I’m looking to move to a socialist country, work there for a few years, then apply for citizenship. I’m already halfway out the door because I’m actually, genuinely, down to the bone scared.
Always oppose Christofascism.
The funny thing about The Ten Commandments. The ones everyone thinks of, according to the story they were destroyed when Moses got angry. The replacement ones that went into the Ark, had commands like “ never boil a baby goat in its mother’s milk”.
in all fairness that goat thing was a real problem back then.
My favorite teacher quit over this stuff rising in my school. I suppose its time to unleash the most anti-christian thing possible: Dungeons and Dragons.
Here before the theocrats start screaming.

Just wanted to say, love listening to you guys. You guys are awesome.
In the colonies, Christian sects were like different religions and the states would legislate mandatory church attendance of their particular religion whether that be protestant, puritan, or quaker. The founding fathers definitely wanted separation of church and state because it was a big problem in the colonies.
When I was still a practicing Christian (I’m more spiritual now than religious), that was always one of my fears I had - if Christians started to take hold of the government where we became more of a theocracy. I always worried what would happen to people who were not of said religion and unfortunately, if we do end up becoming such a thing, I could see those people going away or being told to shut up and let Christians do what they feel is what God would’ve wanted.
I do have optimism though for younger generations who are much more accepting of people and more considerate of others, so I know there would be a rather large percentage of people who wouldn’t be okay with one religion controlling a country.
If a Muslim coach was leading his team in prayer he’d never be allowed to coach again. Honestly fair enough if a teacher wants to share their personal faith, it’s part of their life and maybe kids are curious, as long as it doesn’t effect the curriculum I could understand him disputing being fired. But that is a privilege only afforded to Christians. It’s definitely not “freedom of religion”
31:04
My dad said basically this same thing verbatim to my cousin who expressed concern about climate change. He said if she were a true Christian she wouldn't be concerned about it and that it's a way to shake people's faith and if it was true God will just take the Christians away then (he believes in the rapture) and end the world
Ironic, when the bible also commands us to be good stewards of the earth and all of god’s creation.
Yuk. I know. That's about as grateful as a teen crashing his car bc he thinks his Dad will buy him a better one tomorrow. People who want to speed up the end so Jesus comes back aren't thinking. They can't force God's hand into taking the planet-wreckers to heaven sooner. Also, what about the rest of the world who don't want the world to end?
Correction: the praying football coach was not fired. The district allowed him to pray in his own way, alone. They simply followed the 1A, not allowing the coach to promote his religion to the players. He wants to be able to coerce children into his religious practice. That is a violation of student rights.
Its so much dumber than that. The coach wasn't fired. All that happened is he was asked not to lead prayers anymore, he said no and kept doing it, the school did nothing, and then he chose not to renew his contract.
You guys should do a video talking about Kevin Sorbo. An actor who has turned into a hardcore right wing, Republican, Trump supporting, conspiracy theorist, fundamentalists, paranoid Jesus freak.
Agree. I liked him in Hercules and Andromena. Don't like his extreme beliefs and his Christian movies are terrible.
And the funny thing is that he plays atheists when he's a hard core Christian.

I don't understand how they think kneeling is a mark of disrespect.
Excellent video. You both do an excellent job! Thank you for providing this intelligent dialogue.
You touched on Matt Shea, but he really deserves his own episode. The guy is capital "I" insane. Not only was he involved in the Malheur Wildlife Refuge standoff, but he also wrote his own manifesto on "Christian War" where he literally advocates for the killing of non-believers. In an online chat, he and his friends gleefully talk about wanting to "hang feminists by their nipple rings from flagpoles"
I’ve been binging your videos lately, and I have to say I’m appalled. Not at you, though. I’m literally in tears right now at just how badly the church has let EVERYONE down. People hate Christians, and for good reason. I’m so so sorry for that. Jesus loved eeeeeverybody, and the people he ragged on the most were the hypocrites. We have been the hypocrites. I’m lucky enough to have grown up in a truly loving environment and church where the love is actually for real unconditional, but it hurts me to my core to see so many people broken and scarred from the church. I apologize from the bottom of my heart, and I hope you know Jesus loves you. Like for real
Why would you need some imaginary bronze age God to have love for others? You should try dropping the Jesus. It makes it much simpler.
I gave you a thumbs up but I have to reply Jesus wasnt a real dude my dude.

The coach was offered that he could pray off the field...many Americans say if that was Islam it would've gotten shut down real quick...As an American who believes in God this is turning into authoritarian state...but unlike the Dark Ages folks are educated and we have access to books tht contain history...this will not go down without a fight...
Christianity has an imperative to rule and spread built into its texts. It’s not a bug that they’re trying to institute a fascistic theocracy, it’s the end goal of Christianity if you actually believe in the Bible.
Your discussion of how Baptists have changed over the years reminded me of a couple recent episodes of Behind the Bastards. Definitely worth checking out.

There's a little bit of misinformation in this podcast episode! The coach would pray at the *end* of game on the field, and he wasn't fired! He actually quit because the school asked him to stop or to make it less of a spectacle, but he refused.
In the case of the football coach praying, I'm pretty sure he was advertising or tried to advertise the prayer in the newspaper. And the school stopped it because they didn't want to make it look like a school sponsored event.
Nope. He was saying a prayer in the middle of the field immediately after games while the stands were still full. He basically forced players to participate. The school.simply asked him to not do it in the middle of the field or do it after the game when people had left and he refused to change anything. He wanted to be able to scream his prayer and force others to listen. And the supreme court agreed with him. Fk him and fk the supreme court.

You’re mention of the Kennedy v. Bremerton School District case was a little bit of a mischaracterization, I would recommend checking out the 5-4 podcast for a left-wing analysis of that and other supreme court cases. The case does not technically allow public prayer in school, but only because the facts of the case were represented poorly, and arguably downright dishonestly. The coach was obviously leading a public and coercive prayer, but the conservative judges made it seem like it was a very private endeavor.
The coach also hadn't been fired. He refused to stay when put on a temporary paid administrative leave whilst the school district tried to figure out what the best course of action was. He made the decision to cut ties, which I feel is important in pointing out the persecution complex.
@@myjessicajourney1915 “You can stay as a coach, just stop using your authority to pressure your students into participating in your post-game religious ritual”
“So I’m fired”
@@AnAdequateViolinist that's fair, though I feel it's important that the public is aware that he wasn't fired. Coach can assess the situation that way way as he wants, but the district seemed to be putting in a good faith effort for a compromise, and the narrative of him getting fired doesn't portray that.
Yeah, this is moving the goalposts (pun intended), but I fuck it, I feel it's important to point out this aspect.
So yes the Founding Fathers of the US wrote into the Constitution a separation of church and state because they didn’t want to be under the Catholic Church’s thumb anymore. I think their sentiment was “we don’t want the church governing us anymore” but the norm for almost everyone involved with declaring independence was that they were Protestant. It was just assumed, and that assumption carried over into parts of the Constitution and many of the other official documents created during that time. That’s why the pledge of allegiance says “one nation under God”, and why our money contains phrases like “in God we trust”. It was a shared set of values that is not necessarily standard anymore. I don’t think that the founders wrote the Constitution that way with the intent that the US would be run by the church again, I think it may have been a subconscious addition that nobody thought twice about. Granted, we will probably never know for sure. All I know now, is that I don’t think we should be looking to the assumptions of the past to write our future. I think we should identify what people want now, and acknowledge that the US is so extremely diverse that our government can not be run by one single sect of a religion.
I agree with the sentiment but this is a little inaccurate. The Pledge of Allegiance was written in 1892, standardized in 1942, and the phrase "under god" wasn't added until 1954. The motto of the United States was "E pluribus unum", or "out of many, one" in English. "In God we trust" first appeared in 1864 and wasn't adopted until 1956. The founding fathers had nothing to do with either of them. Many of the founding fathers were deist or influenced by deism. The Constitution contains no reference to religion except for the first amendment. Sorry if I misinterpreted you and none of that was what you were saying.
This came in fast!
A big reason for the separation of church and state came from the time when the states were colonies. Jefferson had to argue a case where a minister of a different protestant religion was jailed. He was preaching the wrong version of protestantism. Each colony had an established religion. So sure we can go back to jailing Baptists when Presbyterianism is the main religion.
I sort of prayed the belief away. I prayed, felt I got an answer from God, then basically got told I was under evil influences. That lead me to realize religion was kind of garbage.

I gotta say, I don't think Year One is the most accurate movie. My father says it "Makes a mockery of our biblical patriarchs," a fancy phrase he heard earlier that day. Come to think of it, the Bible does a fine job with the mockery
Thank you for this. These are terrifying times. You bring joy and comfort that religion never did. I recommend searching You Tube for Clint Heacock. He does excellent videos on Christian nationalism and Christian dominionism.
You know what would convince a lot more people that christians were right, and not just fuckin crazy?
If the further we went along the path we're on, the worse things got for everyone but Christians. They just quietly kept their commandments and they thrived constantly in every way, and the church grew constantly despite the rest of the world moving further away from Christianity.
Instead, the secular world is getting better. We're discussing these things, and trying to learn to move past them together, and christianity keeps shrinking, no matter how loud they screech, they still shrink almost like there's not a god backing up their constant claims...
Their laws will be torn apart as they engage in terrorism the US military will have to deal with them
When you consider the Dominionists, it's not "nationalism" as much as it is Christian hegemony.
The old testament never uses the Hebrew word for marriage or wife. It simply uses the noun woman. "His woman" "you may take her as your woman"

I see Christians saying that we shouldn’t bother with saving the earth because they are leaving during the rapture. Everything is going to be destroyed during The Tribulation. And it’s worldly and they care about their heavenly home more. Also some believe it’s worshipping Gaia and that’s part of Divine Feminism.
I was raised Catholic and the one thing I loved was we were encouraged to pray to Mary. She was my Jewish Mother. Some fundamental preachers really do not like anything about women. Tolerate them because they’re walking wombs that cook and clean and submit to their husbands and pastors and etc. Sadly enough a lot of women feel like these men are right. 😕
Irony, I'm an extremely spiritual person lol but I absolutely love your videos, and everything you do here. My spirituality is so far off from Christian [or any religious ideas], and I think you make pure gold.
Imo "God" is a force of existence, not like... a person. It's hard to explain. A force of existence of which we are all a part. Us, all the other animals, the trees, the planet, the stars, the galaxy, the universe. It's just like... we're a cell in the mix. It'd be like if our own cells were Christian and they denied our existence & made up some random thing, when instead they should be caring for the thing that ACTUALLY gives them life. For us that's Earth. That's what I think Christians are doing.
Freedom is my religion. Love is my G-d.

To which nation, under God, were His laws applied in the Bible? Only one. And by agreement on multiple occasions by all the people. The Israelites. Its always about individual choice in the Old Testament same as the New. Context and research matter in general. How much more so for those of us who claim the name of Christ??? If I'm not approaching each person from the point Jesus did, counting you as more important than myself, then I use His name in vain and make a mockery of my one time around this rock. What a tragic waste. Better for me to start washing some feet, instead of waving flags....
