Bell's palsy: One Loyola patient's story

  • Audrey Rex talks about how she noticed the onset of Bell's palsy.. At first she was having trouble pronouncing 'b' and 'p,' and soon lost her ability to smile. After six months she had no movement on one side of her face. She met with Dr. John Leonetti, director of Cranial Base Surgery at Loyola and a well-renowned Bell's palsy specialist. Dr. Leonetti explains how Bell's palsy, or idiopathic facial paralysis, causes acute facial paralysis on one side of the face. It is thought to be caused by a virus. The nerve swells within its bony sleeve and paralyzes itself. Audrey had the surgery to remove the bony sleeve, which relieved pressure on the nerve. She soon started to recover movement in her face. She met with a therapist to improve her muscle function. Her motivation has paid off. Audrey has recovered beautifully. I was diagnosed with bell's palsy in 2019. I made full recovery in just 2 months. No doubt It was one of the most horrible experience of my life.. I was alone..far away from home when it happened...The first symptom I had was that I couldn't move my lips.. then I felt terrible pain on the right side of my face..☹️ I thot i was having stroke and I was going to die in a minute ☹️ I still remember that time I kept saying psalm 23:4 & 2 timothy 1:7 in my heart and that comforted me alot...👏 I was prescribed corticosteroids and some painkillers and did facial therapy for two months. I am perfectly fine now 🙏🏽

I was also diagnosed with bell's pulsy last week. Luckily, I went to the doctor and they gave me medicine and told me to visit a therapist who will massage my face. My therapist taught be some facial exercises which I need to do every 2 hours and I'm kind of recovering. Some people sadly don't have money for visiting doctor/therapist.. i want to help people like that with what I know. Your condition might be more severe than me or a better but I'll tell you what exercises I do in my face. Hope it helps it, you can try whatever i suggest but it's always better to visit an actual doctor if you can! 😇
    1. Try to lift both of your eyebrows, while having bell's pulsy, it's difficult to move one of your eyebrow. For me, bell's pulsy happened in the left side of my face meaning that the left side of my face is kinda paralysed. In the beginning, I had to take medicine from doctor. I couldn't move/lift my left eyebrow completely. After taking medicine, it was a bit better. You have to try hard to lift both of your eyebrows, do it 20 times every 2 hours.
    2. Whichever eyebrow you can't lift, massage it with your hand/fingers.
    3. Try to scrunch your nose, like when people are angry, they make their nose trills big and furrow their eyebrows. "😠| 👃/ 🐽 - ↗️↘️" like these emojis. Also do that every 2 hours.
    4. Inhale and keep the air in ur mouth for 10 seconds, it's okay if the air leaks. Then, exhale (also do every 2 hours.)
    5. Massage the cheek in which you have bell's pulsy. How to massage: with your hand/fingers, move your cheek upwards your ear. Also do it every 2 hours.
    6. Drink water with a straw
    7. Try to blow balloons 🎈
These are what I know, good luck! You are not alone, best of luck! 💜

I hope this works for me. Been living with Bel's palsy almost my entire life. Been having it since I was 9 because of a brain tumor to radiation and chemotherapy with damage to pituitary gland and hypothyroidism. 21 years now since then.
My symptoms: can't close my eye fully no strength to keep eye closed either (I can open the eye just by flicking it with my finger lightly), very tiny smile, no cheek indication, no eye brow movement, and a few others. Other symptoms I'm not sure if it's directly link to Bel's palsy : dry eye (I have tears from just simple exercise like jogging, eating spices or well flavored food not exactly spicy foods, doing physical work like gardening or lawn mowing to mainly from simple body exhaustion if not little sweat), runny nose (happens when body is at little exhaustion also from just simple exercise or sports, from eating mild + spicy foods). All symptoms on right side of face.
It really gets to you when you interact with other people.
Tutored little kids: You smile at them they look at you as if you are doing something weird. Makes you give up the effort of even trying to smile.
Random kids or people who don't understand these kind of illness: stare at you randomly as if you some other unknown race or species and are afraid especially try to ignore you.

Almost a month into mine now. I’ve made a massive amount of recovery so far, I look just about like my old self again. The main issue is my eye though. I still can’t blink properly on the right side and with this cold weather at the moment my eye waters loads when I’m outside. I literally have tears streaming down my face every time I step outside, which is most of the time since I’m at university. Bloody annoying but hey, I’m recovering at least.

Mc donalds Crusty burger I’m sorry to hear that. You’ll get through it, just take it easy and get a lot of rest. I’d also avoid reading into it too much. I made that mistake and convinced myself that I had Ramsay hunt syndrome (significantly worse). The best thing to do is to go to a GP get steroids asap. Other than that all you can really do is rest and let it run its course. It may seem hopeless in the first week, but recovery can be quite spontaneous. I hope you get better soon

iv had it 2 years back. Still have symptoms to the left eye as well as cheek. I seems to have recovered almost 80% and still noticing slight improvements. But the recovery process is extremely slow in case you had delayed the initial medication. So as soon as it happens rush to the doctor and start recommended medication immediately. I wasted 4 to 5 days until i saw the Doctor which resulted in a very slow recovery.

I had Bell's Palsy in 2003. The doctor thought I had a stroke since I couldn't feel the left side of my tongue, chest, arm or face. The night before it struck, I was having a lot of twitching in the affected eye and also it would matter up quite a bit.
The next morning I felt horrible, had to slide off the bed carefully because I couldn't feel my upper right extremities. I crawled to the corded phone I had at the time and pulled it down to me from the shelf it was on and pressed a number, it was my sister, I couldn't talk good and the last thing I heard her say is she is on the way. I think I passed out from feeling so sick because I don't remember anything until I heard banging on my front door. I crawled to it and barely got the lock turned. She rushed me to a hospital and I was told I definitely looked like I had a bad stroke. They did MRI. It was clear. I was diagnosed with B.P. It's been a long time but I'm still with drooping on the right side of my face and eye looks smaller than the other one. I'm learning just now that there is a procedure that may help. I'm very self conscious about it and get called droopy face, squint eye, freak so I try to keep from smiling too big so its not as noticeable.
My heart goes out to anyone that has had or has it. It is rough. I sympathize!

Just diagnosed with Bells Palsy the day after Christmas. My first symptom was that my tongue felt funny. I didn’t think anything of it until I woke up the next morning and my right side of my face wasn’t working. I went straight to the ER and was prescribed Prednisone and an antiviral med. The pain is intense on the right side and the headache is terrible. I wish doctors knew more about this condition. It’s very stressful to go through this!

I still struggle to blink properly on my right eye, but I can just about close it when I try. My smiles pretty much back which is the important part, at a point where no one would really notice I have anything wrong with me now. Still certain muscles I can’t move though for instance, I can’t downturn my lips and still can’t puff out my cheeks. I’d say I’m about 65-70% recovered. How about you? Hope you’ve started to recover

Hi, Prabhu! Unfortunately, our doctors can't assess patients via e-mail or social media. But if you'll be in the Chicago area sometime in the future, you can request an appointment with one of them either online at www.loyolamedicine.org/appointment or by phone at 888-584-7888. Good luck! -Keisha

I got it on 12/30/19. At the 3 week mark, I began to notice slight muscle movement. I can furrow my eyebrows but not lift them. The corner of my mouth raises a teeny tiny bit when I smile with my lips closed. I can pucker my lips a little better and my face seems to be straightening out. I'm pretty frustrated with the medical care I've been receiving. No one knows what to do. I went to a physical therapist who said he hadn't seen a case in 15 years so he did a google search over his lunch break and determined that there was nothing he could do for me.

Same happened to me, this is what my facial therapist and doctor told ,e to do:
So, one of your eye might be normal. You should shut both of ur eyes close but one will remain a little open (because of bell's pulsy) with your index finger, you will tap/press the eye which you can't close slowly. Because of pressing the eye, it'll close. Then you will slowly open both of your eyes again and repeat the process every 2 hours for recovery. Another is, in the downside of your eyebrow, there is a place where women draw the eyeliner wing. Right? Over there, with the help of the finger tip of your thumb, you will press it then move it a little to the left side (whichever eye you ahve problem closing) and also repeat it every 2 hours. This is what I do, your condition might be more severe so it's better if you talk with a doctor. Hope you recover very soon! 😇💗

Holly Leeming flu vaccine only makes you produce antibodies, not get rid of it. And also it’s a flu vaccine not a virus vaccine, it can only hope to prevent flu viruses not other different viruses. The Bell’s palsy virus is most definitely not a flu virus, otherwise you would have the flu.

Renee O'Day OK I'm aware a nurse in the US has just reported she has Bells Palsy after Covid shot and is advising people not too get it. Big Pharmaceutical have been promoting vaccines as safe and effective for years because they have immunity from lawsuits. Politicians don't care because both Democrats and Republicans receive campaign donations from Big pharmaceutical, and vaccine courts pay out for damage leaving taxpayers accountable for paying for injury, for something that is supposedly safe and effective. Many have family member that have been injured or they themselves have been injured, and many do not know that vaccine courts exist, and they are paying for them. I would like too know how many vaccine injuries have gone unreported, due to incompetence from medical doctors.
