- A Texas family is threatening legal action against their local school district after their teen son was told he couldn’t walk at graduation because of his long dreadlocks. DeAndre Arnold is being forced to either cut his hair or face in-school suspension. Omar Villafranca spoke to Arnold and his family to see how they are handling the situation.

How does someone’s hair interfere with learning
@Mr Lion That's not an answer unless you can explain why "he looks like a girl" would interfere with learning.
Also, he doesn't even look like a girl, so wtf. EDIT: Ok, he kinda does
Exactly, how does hair affect your learning ability? Now a learning disability can impact your learning in a certain academic subject. I know this, because I myself have a learning disability and I know the racism that DeAndre Arnold is currently experiencing because I am Mexican and I know what racism appears as. However, what Barbers Hills I.S.D. is applying to this young black man is completely unjust. I would sue the school district for unjust racial discrimination.
It doesn’t. It’s just another way to control people.

That was so crazy
They did update the rules in December. This is why the wholesale mess is now happening. Before December as long as the hair was pinned up above the ears it’s was not a problem. Please be reminded that this young man has been attending school there since the 7th grade. It is now half way through his senior year. He is an honor roll student never been in trouble why all of a sudden is it a big deal about his hair?
So the school district is called “Barbers Hill” and they want him to cut his hair. The irony

Wow, I didn't know cutting your hair was a pre-requisite to graduating from HS and doing your graduation ceremony? This school district is crazy.
Yes, for heaveaven's sake, why should a school be able to set rules about what kids look like or what they wear, or for that matter how they behave? Schools have no right to have rules! That is barbaric!
Every school and job has rules. They agreed to them when the enrolled. They should stick to the agreement they made upon enrollment and grow up.
@KING BLACK PANTHER 9000 if you want to, for example, drive a car, you get a license. It's a rule. If you want to graduate from this school you follow their rules. It's that simple. Not everyone is trolling and implying such just because others dont share your view is very immature. Someday he will be offered a job and refuse it for the same reasons. Then he can play with his hair and we will pay his way through life.
@KING BLACK PANTHER 9000 It is stated in the video that the length of the hair is the problem not the style. Also, if the child has the right to do anything he wants with his hair, why cant the school have rights to do what they think is best for their students. I am married to a black woman and have 2 kids with her. Her and her family have had dreads and I like the style. I will also teach my kids to obey rules and be successful. Their hair length will come in second when deciding their future. Professional men will almost always have neat, short hair. I would like to see this boy grow up to be president of our country someday but he's off to a bad start if his hair length is so important that it will hinder him in high school. It's not always about what we can do, sometimes it's about what we should do. There will always be people with frivolous lawsuits trying to cash in.
@KING BLACK PANTHER 9000 He should be focused on learning and he's decided to take a stand on a haircut. Just silly. Unfortunately, our laws sometimes support this behavior. That's why when I go to the front desk in my local hospital there is a woman sitting there with purple hair. However, there are no professionals with purple hair in the hospital such as doctors, nurses, or office staff. Maybe they legally could fight to have purple hair but they choose focus on being professional instead.
Teachers and children’s at the school should be protesting for him
I get dress codes, at the beginning of the school year, you sign that you have read the school handbook, in which the dress codes are established. However, this situation is stupid. He is graduating and leaving H.S. if they didn't have an issue during the school year, then it should not be an issue to graduate. Its hard enough to get kids to finish H.S. and is an honor. Sorry, the school is dead wrong!!
Senior year is stupid just drop out and go get a GED

@@b1bbscraz3y its wrong to target him like this. If there is any other student of any race or gender in the school with hair this long who is allowed to walk, this is WRONG.
Seems stupid to cause a lot of upset over soneones hair style. Im from CO and at my school we were allowed to have whatever hairstyle we wanted and autonomy was fine. Most black peoples hair is naturally curly and coarse. Dreadlocks are a traditional, culturally rooted hair style which helps them maintain a clean and neat appearance. As you can see in this video, his dreads are neat and tidy and he is a clean and appropriate looking kid.
I wouldnt even care if he had a hundred facial piercings and green bi hawks. Graduating from high school has nothing to do with your hair cut no matter what it is. A teacher has no right to target the traditional cultural hairstyle kf a black boy in 2019 no matter how pervy that teacher obviously is. He should be fired.
It can't be a specific length? Does that apply to females too? His hair didn't grow overnight, what's the problem?
Kat Ferguson, people are stupid, it’s his hair and it’s cool
Kat Ferguson they clearly said it’s for males student dress
@soli Sanchez they have bigger things to worry about not his hair like seriously how is that rule going to help them when something bad happens?I bet you they have people violenting the dress code and getting away with it every day.
@soli Sanchez By your logic it seems that education and safty isn't important. He's been at that school for 4 years and im pretty sure there are other students with longer hair that will be able to walk. Also there are kids wanting to hurt other kids and this is what they are worried about. Education and safety is more important than hair kid.
@soli Sanchez lol He kept his hair up when in school and maybe that made them so mad that they AMENDED the dress code in December to say, it didn't matter if your hair was up or down it had to be a specific length. He was following the dress code until they changed it 🤷🏾♀️ sounds suspect to me

Who cares about his hair, at least he,s going to school,, get a grip,, gb

So this code is only for men? Because girls have long hair . Gender discrimination is what it sounds like to me.
I do think they also share that ridiculous mentality that "males have short hair and females should have long hair", but I think he is being targeted because of his race and not just long hair, dreadlocks. He hasn't done anything wrong. He is expressing his individuality and it is his culture would they should HAVE to respect. They just now update the dress code to try to be petty when he worked hard like everyone else to come this far. It's disappointing that their are such stupid people in positions of power like this or even in existence.
I agree this to be gender. Oliff v. East Side Union High School District (1972).
@@leticiavarga1009 Yeah gender and race. Black males. We like to dred our hair and let it grow.
A school building told him?
That’s one powerful building.

Good luck in college young man keep up the good grades never cut your hair for anyone.
Yeah, and stay out of the military. They'll cut your damn hair and there's nothing that he would be able to do about it. Little brats everywhere and people cheering them on.
@@regulusmine2336 I served 17 yrs cut my hair weekly in army unless deployed and I had no problem following strict dress code. This young man here is acquiring a education in high school and as stated has good grades. The only brats I see are the childish adults focusing on a boys hair and disrupting his education and spending time focusing on his hair instead of doing their job. Wasted time and tax dollars
@@texasveteran7231 , wasting yours and mine too. I admit that I should refrain from such self intoxicating silliness - including my own. But this is ridiculous. C' mon. Racism? You got to call bs when you see it.
All this kid is Iearning is a lifetime of " it's not fair" , and victimhood. Look at what his angry parents are teaching him instead of telling him to learn about life and sometimes one has to sacrifice one's childish proclivities. The worst thing to happen to him would be that he wins his spoilt brat lottery.
*cough* job interview
@Jak Jones well unlike blacks whites seem to be better off because they at least HAVE families.
Props to the young boy for standing up to his rights.
“I don’t think, I know.”. He said that with great vehemence.

Good! Sue the damn school district!
Heartless fools will always find a way to hate and discriminate.

Right like what does that have to do with education?? Nothing . I'm glad I graduated 10 yrs ago we didn't have to deal with this back then

Bullspit!!! Leave that young man alone!!!! Our founding fathers had ponytails and powdered wigs! This is America!!!!!!
Melissa Too funny!! Lol...
Milissa Poisson great point 👍
Why he look like smooth gio 😭
How is this acceptable?? I’ve never heard of any school here in Sweden having any sort of dress code (thank god for that). Forbidding a person from attending at school because of his/her hair is a complete disrespect, isn’t that obvious?? This is disgusting, can’t belive these things still happens in the US...
Why do bigots use the most extreme examples to justify their points? How does coming to school indecently exposed (i.e. in underwear) compare to coming to school with a certain hairstyle that distracts or impede's no one's education?
The guys graduating prepping for college'like he said he doesn't need any added stress in his life.
It's real..
This is just as worse as my school telling me I couldn't carry my inhaler during my graduation
I wish superintendents would be so concerned more about bullying, as what they are doing to this handsome, well-mannered kid (by pulling him out of class every week). Seems that the public school system doesn't want peace, but rather be a part of the problem!!! *Typical*
Imagine being called to the office EVERY WEEK for violations to the dress code.

This is the craziest thing I have ever seen. Why would you use a law to prevent a good student from walking for graduating.
It’s very biased and it’s shameful.
As long as I get my diploma and I get into a great college scrw the high school administration. Give me my diploma and I'm out.
This young man is not a trouble maker, gets good grades, and has had this hair style since the 6th grade. N now you want him to cut his hair to graduate. Such BS. don't do it. That principal is down right ignorant and a bully.
He is a trouble maker. He is called to the office EVERY WEEK for violations of the schools dress code. Rules are rules and you're breaking them and causing trouble even if you "don't feel like it."
Say Rules that are unjust should be broken. Other than the fact that he is breaking this one rule, he isn’t a trouble maker. You tell me exactly what is so wrong with his hair being the way that it is.
They shouldn't worry about his hair being long... What matters is that he's doing good in school and he's going to graduate
30 years same policy huh😒 doesn’t that tell you something
I love his locks please keep your beautiful locks 🙏💜👍
...until you see a rat stick its head out. Yeah, I'm trolling.
Discrimination against long hair, how long until they tell girls they have to cut their hair.
They would say that’s also distracting and that only lesbians like Ellen wear their hair like that.
Pssshh girls must have hair longer than their chin... I can totally picture Dolores Umbridge adding that to her wall.

Bro, like 99% of people wear underwear to school every day. lol
