IU wrote multiple songs inspired by Sulli like Peach, Red Queen and BBI BBI. Sulli also appeared as a cameo for IU in Hotel Del Luna. IU mentioned that Sulli always came to her concerts and IU said that she thought Sulli was watching during her Seoul concert.

@KAETHOS TV You can see it this way.
The first time these lyrics appear she's asking her friends whether they are happy considering that they can finally live their life the way they want.

it can also be seen as she's asking herself if shes happy now that she's tried to run away from her pain, or maybe now she's diving into her memories where her friends live on forever. IU has a lot of themes regarding her age like in 23, palette, and this song with her turning 28. it could be younger her asking if she's happy now that shes older, or present her asking future her if shes happy even though she lost everyone. iu musical genius making me tHINK of all the possibilities.

With regard to the airplane hitting turbulence, the emergency message struck me as odd. "Electronic Devices Off" Usually, the message is fasten seat belt, for your safety. This is intentional. Kpop in general has had to deal with tragedies because artists are bullied online. I think the story is actually for the fans to understand that they need to turn off their "electronic devices", as it causes the turbulence in the life of IU's friends.

I think its both too! I mean she's 28 (Korean age) which means she's older and has lived longer than both Sulli (25) and Jonghyn (27). And Hara was 28 when she died. When I was younger, four of my aunts and uncles had died before my grandma. It was obviously hard for my grandma outliving her children. So for IU its about reflecting on herself at her age (which is still very young), as well as her friends who died very young.

I love how she reflect her year and express it in a art way. That's what artist do. Because the song came from her life/thought, it became something so genuine and so touching even to people don't share the same memories. That's the charm of artist writing their own song.

Agree! Although IU didn't directly mention that this is about her friends, that doesn't mean it isn't (in part). As you said, it's likely about both them and as well as her own growth/acceptance. She said that she worked closely with the director for this music video for the concept and storyline, and it's hard to ignore the symbolism and references to her precious friends.
Similar situation with another song of hers, "Dear Name." Although IU also never directly stated it was dedicated to those lost during the Sewol tragedy, some Korean fans felt like it was. She keeps descriptions on her work vague so that the listener can come up with their own interpretations.

    I am a 76-year-old lady from Canada.
Because I have time, I decided to learn how to speak, read and write Korean.
To be honest I’m not very good at either yet but it opened up a world for me that I didn’t even know existed. I got interested in Korean dramas, then BTS, and then Kpop, and lucked in finding your channel..
I really admire how you and your friend both approach whatever the topic is you’re speaking about, with integrity, decency and kindness with great knowledge.
Obviously, because I am a grandmother one thing that has horrified me for quite a while, are the suicides we Canadian read about in Korea.
No child should die before his/her parents, But in most cases there is no choice.
In my heart of hearts I sympathize with those that loved the children, while the child felt that no one loved them, and felt so very much pain and loneliness.
Depression is a horrible thing, and deserves to be addressed openly, it has to be taken out of the closet and faced face forward, By those who are suffering it, and those fools who deny it!
Here, we in Canada have progressed a bit in regards to depression and mental illnesses, but just by drops in the bucket.
On-line haters Should be held criminally responsible for their actions.
This may seem harsh, but when hate results in death, there is only one way to say you are responsible.

Copy my name and pm me if you need to talk with someone.
It wasn’t always easy for me, and when I was your age it was very very hard. I came from a very very bad situation as a child, and had to teach myself to learn how to love how to respect, and how to appreciate the world around me.
Every year in my life got a little bit better, and suddenly I realize that everything was really quite good.
We can’t have everything that we want, but we can learn to be happy with what we have. We can learn to enjoy life even during the hard times.
I hate the fact that anybody in this world thinks that nobody loves them. You do not have to be somebody’s child for that person to love them and to care for them and to know that they are valuable and essential to this world. Stay strong always believe that there is something better ahead and usually there is. Even if it’s just seeing a butterfly on a cloudy day !
Smile at people do something good for somebody every day even if it’s just saying “you look good today.”
Things have a way of turning around. So don’t go for the impossible right away look around you and see one little thing that needs improvement and work on that. Then each time you complete a task you give yourself another one and you’ll find that each time you do this you’re doing a greater and bigger thing for your life.
Take care, and as I always told my daughter, “ You have to believe!” Be it Karma, religion or just in basic humanity.

      I'm a fellow Canadian, I'm actually a year older than Suga/IU. I'm 29.. (I'm also an artist :>!)
I wish so many of people my age would read your message. I have lost so many friends from hate.. and pain. I've grown up on a military base and all my life I have watched friends and/or their parents take their own lives from their occupation being too much. I lost my own best friend when I was a teenager due to hate comments being louder than my love for her. This song is exactly how I feel even 16 years after.
I agree that online haters should be held accountable. Thank you for leaving your message here, it makes me so proud to read this from a Canadian from an older generation. Especially because I know the older generation sometimes are harder to persuade about mental health.
I hope you stay safe in these trying times, love from Eastern Ontario.

@withchanwoo I believe your enthusiasm to give majority of the credit to one person is totally misplaced. Please note that songwriter, producer and arrangement credits belong to 3 individuals - IU, SUGA and El CAPITXN (Jang Yi-Jeong). Let's not discount the effort and talent of the others who worked hard to make this collaboration a reality. Remember, Wikipedia is your friend: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eight_(song). As for the music video itself, I believe the concept/idea is from IU and her team. The production crew of the MV are credited towards the end of the MV as well.

Not sure it has been mentioned, but the release date of Eight was on the 6th May 2020, 8 years after the release of Peach (IU's first song about Sulli) on the 4th May 2012, would also indicate this is a timely remembrance of Sulli.
I also felt the abrupt sudden finish of the track (some people complained about it being too short) was intentional. The abrupt silence was unexpected and acts as a powerful motif on the idea of sudden loss, unfulfilled, incomplete. The cruel reality that is contradictory to the romanticism of 'Forever we young'. The contrasting use of loud sound vs dead/hollow noise at the beginning and especially towards the end, along with the compelling suggestive visuals poignantly conveys a heavy-hearted soliloquy that is both nuanced and concise. A heartbreaking introspection on the infinite struggles of the living, coping with love, loss, missing them, commemorate them, hoping for the impossibility of true happiness again despite memories that are both happy but full of sadness (and regret).

Even though we all don't know for sure towards who this song is dedicated by IU. *But I think everyone of us can interpret our own meaning out if it. And isn't that just the beauty of music? And overall just Art itself that it's open for interpretation and means something different to everyone, You can listen to a song and think about it the way you want to.*
I do hope, that people understand the deep message and that this song helps in creating awareness towards the spreading of hate comments and such and that some intivatives could be taken against it and that we wouldn't have to see any other idol giving up his/her life.

I just wanted to say that when I saw her video and looked up the English lyrics, I ugly cried. I lost one of my best friends who suffered 20 years with Hydrocephalus and spina bifida. When people said be wouldn’t live past age 5, God’s graces were upon him and he lived til 20. He was bound in a wheelchair and had an oxygen tank with him at all times, but he lived the best life before he died. He did everything he wanted and more. Even when he was in a lot of pain, he was always asking me how I was doing and how he just loves hearing about people’s days. He passed away last year and just hearing this song just reminded me that even though it hurts being without him here, I am happy he’s able to walk, run, and do more up in heaven. I love him always and I’ll miss him forever. Rest in peace Boy, I love you forever 💚

To know that she wrote an essay before making it into a song makes it even more sad. She wrote it in a moment where she was filled with pain, regret, helplessness, and sorrow. She wrote this with the listener in mind, where she told her emotions and asking if they are happy now with what they had done. I am so thankful that she is such a strong person and is trying her best and not giving up.
I cried so much and I really appreciate this video because I saw a lot of comments saying "I don't what it's about but I love it". People need to know the origin of this song. • @aashkaj7466
    @aashkaj7466 Před 3 lety +10

The below paragraph was my opinion before i saw the video. It is a testament to IU's sincerity, and genius, that even without understanding the language, i sensed most of what she was trying to say. Her music has soul!
That last expression is very powerful! Its like she wants to reassure her friends that she is happy if they have found peace, but then she realizes that they may be finally free, but she is never going to see them again,
I think that is what the juxtaposition is about, the happiness of their memories, the celebration of their freedom, is all there. but she is time and again reminded that she is not going to see them again in reality.
The dragon is Jonghyun because yong is korean for dragon, and the girl who is finally happy, bounding and leaping up to the bright happy orange sky of hope and joy (that she could not find before) is Sulli. So IU is kinda happy for them. She is sending them off and is describing this joy of their liberation, as well as the innocence and happiness of their memories with the color Orange. There is this almost loving maternal touch to her lyrics here..she's like "my dear are you finally at peace, go be happy...you will now never age. You will remain young and happy in my memory "
But then again she comes back to reality, and thinks from her perspective and feels lonely, and a little mad at them for leaving her so abruptly. She is letting herself feel the selfishness of wanting them with her, and also the selflessness of wanting their happiness
She says that it is a nightmare to be in so much pain when she is seeing them in her memories, but now that is the only place where she will see them now, so she doesn't want to wake up.
I swear i could not bear to, so i did not read all the lyrics..just the music, her voice, her expressions, and the mention of the color orange...it made me cry. and i dont cry easily...i did not know jonghyun and still cried.
Orange brings peace. happiness, and also there is some melancholy woeful nostalgia for the times that we have left behind. The people that were.
The upbeat track is also IU's promise to her friends that she will live well for them, she will carry them in her heart, and make them proud. This woman is pure and genius!!

IU has indeed grown up, and all of these friends that she has lost were apart of her journey. Not only is she accepting her friends passing away and is finally at peace with it, but she is also fully embracing what has happened within her 28 years and is thankful for all of the memories she has had (including with her friends that have passed) even if they were less than happy ones.

I first saw the vids of IU letting someone else hear this song first before the released date...those listeners were confused on why the melody is happy but the lyrics were sad....and IU confirmed it that it was a sad song...so from then ive gotten even curious on WHY...then the song was released and ive seen the lyrics, i understood why esp from previous tragic events happened on her...yeah. it really indeed a sad song...😭
Lyrics says about how she wants to only think about her happy moments with someone who can never be with her anymore...😭

This was how I interpreted the MV when I first saw it too. I feel the animated girl in the forest wasn't her or didn't drawn to resemble her, so it must have been someone else. I didn't know about the nickname so that explained the lizard. Even though the song was upbeat, the lyrics reflect sorrow and yearning. The machine indicated that the whole MV was in an alternative world or her mind and not real. It was really good and heartbreaking to watch. And yea I agree with the interpretation of the ending scene.

@DKDKTV , would you also say that Suga's "forever is a sandcastle" refers to how forever is like a dream, but also very fragile and can be washed away by waves suddenly, referring to the next line about how farewells are like an 'emergency text'?

Thank you for giving this interpretation respectfully and keeping it on your channel despite no profit. I was there for Love Poem in Seoul Day 2.. I saw how hearbroken she was. And giving this perspective somehow makes me feel worried but also glad for our unnie, for her to be able to find some sort of catharsis with her music. May those who have passed rest in peace~

I love that Eight on it's side is the symbol for infinity. Meaning, they will always be a part of each other. "Infinity is something we are introduced to in our math classes, and later on we learn that infinity can also be used in physics, philosophy, social sciences, etc. Infinity is characterized by a number of uncountable objects or concepts which have no limits or size. This concept can be used to describe something huge and boundless. It has been studied by plenty of scientists and philosophers of the world, since the early Greek and early Indian epochs. In writing, infinity can be noted by a specific mathematical sign known as the infinity symbol (∞) created by John Wallis, an English mathematician who lived and worked in the 17th century."

At first I thought that it was a beautiful song (as per IU fashion) but now after watching this video I realised how much meaning it had and how it affected her and a lot of people... Its really saddening how I never realised this before and now it made me more aware of her situation
But I think as netizens and other people who are not the 'haters' (no offense to anyone at all) we shouldn't tell them to 'die' or 'be punished' because I'm sure by now they might have learnt their lesson and us saying that to them might cause the cycle to repeat again
May Sulli, Hara and Jonghyun rest in peace 🙏🙏🙏 and may all of us have the heart and conscience to not do that to other people as well 💪💪💪
